Cameron, buddy, your videos always deliver! I've been lamenting the cost in both money and time to either buy new hardware or have my old stuff re-plated on my 2001 KDX 200 project for a while now. Seriously had no idea that anyone made a kit to do this at home. My brother and I are also rebuilding my nephew's KTM 65 XC and a Yamaha Wolverine quad. Add in my love of old cars and trucks, and this is definitely a worthwhile investment. Thanks for being the guy who shows the rest of us how to get it done!

Did a good job I get a lot of stuff zinc plated and the current guy I use has a heated caustic pickling bath that he puts parts in overnight first to strip anything off them (painted steel I've welded etc.) since the sand blasting leaves a dull finish The problem with the sand blasted finish is in the weather or grime it gets stained more easily than the glossy chrome finish. To dry off small parts once they are done he has a container of fine sawdust he puts the smaller parts in the dry them off without touching them.

Dear Cameron, thanks for your excellent detailed video. Boy, I didn’t realise that polished zinc looked so beautiful. It’s nothing like galvanised iron. Have to give it a try. I’ve got a heap of rusty tools that I want to plate and it seems that zinc is a strong contender.

Thank you Cameron, I just plated my first bolt and it looks great. To keep the plating bucket at the correct temperature, without leaving the bucket heater in which as you mentioned could react with the plating process, I put the Caswell bucket I use for plating into a larger bucket. The larger bucket has a microwave safe kitchen plate on the bottom. , I placed the bucket heater element on top of the plate. Then I put a jar on the plate, inside of the bucket heater loop. The larger (outer bucket) is then filled with some water. I put the Caswell smaller plating bucket inside of the larger bucket. This way the heating element isn't touching any plastic and it can't react with the inner bucket, yet it keeps the whole thing at an even temperature.

Nice results! Regarding the mild pitting from the rust at 33:35, you might want to try some de-rusting via electrolysis before attacking the part with the scotch bright wheel. Electrolytic de-rusting reforms the material by removing the oxygen from the oxidized part. You might get lucky and recover some of the material and thus reduce the pitting. You already have most of the set up you need. You just need to get one more bucket. One warning : careful with stainless steel when doing this - never use stainless steel or stuff containing chrome as your container or the sacrificial element or you will get very nasty, hazardous vapours and gases. So stick to normal iron/steel for your sacrificial element and plastic for your container.
@1conu593
@1conu593 Год назад
That’s exactly what I realized while restoring bikes parts ! Acid is a very easy way to remove rust but it just dissolves while electrolyte convert the rust leaving less pitting !
@1conu593
@1conu593 Год назад
Apparently carbon is a great sacrificial element leaving a very clean bath
@Stelios.Posantzis
@Stelios.Posantzis Год назад
@@1conu593 Useful to know this observation. Since I made the original comment above, I've been told that it is not correct as it is not possible to undo the oxidisation and liberate the oxygen from the oxidised iron via electrolysis--the only way to do that is through extreme heat, which would melt the part. Given your observation, something else must be going on but I'm not a chemist. I also know that acid will eat the metal away so that might possibly make the pitting worse, depending on how long the piece is exposed to it. Rust conversion may be another possible option in certain situations.

I watched this years ago and now I'm watching it again. Cameron, you are a great teacher and I admire your dedication. One thing I would've loved to see here was the Black Zinc. My Kawasaki ZX9R has them all over the place and they are quite expensive to buy from the dealer and I'd love to be able to re plate them just like the factor do. Honda also have a similar colouring on their hardware too. It tends to be a bit more glossier than that of Kawasaki, but similar colour. I'd love to see a video on that if possible. Thanks again !

Great tutorial and thanks for putting in so much time and effort. I’ve seen a few video’s and this is the first that I would now consider tackling myself. You could put the heater in a larger, shallow bucket of water and place the plating bucket in that hot water. That way the metal from the heater wouldn’t interfere with the plating process but I would not have thought of that unless I had watched this all the way through. Do you know if the process is similar for nickel plating?

I had already gone through this process using the same kit and your experience exactly mirrors mine. I also use a long narrow container bought at a garden centre for plating brake rods or anything that doesn’t fit in the standard bucket. It does make you realise why plating companies charge so much though, it’s not a quick process.

If I get the new CRF125F and swap a CRF150R motor in it, I'd definitely want this process done to all of the hardware because for the pitbikes it's hard to find a specific hardware kit with the zinc plating on it. While I'd be at that I'd freshen up the hardware on my 3 other bikes as well as a little finishing touch. Awesome video Cam, I was really wondering how plating was done. Thanks.

Very cool, I have completed a few restore projects and never thought of plating the hardware, if I needed chrome fasteners, I would buy from Albany but of course not all sizes and threads are available. A work around fr me though for a high shine is ordering a stainless steel replacement nut or bolt. With a buffing wheel, stainless will polish to look almost 100% like chrome.
