Send me a coffee to drink in my Orikaso cup! ko-fi.com/tjbarts Or to make an aluminium foil hat, those seem to be popular nowadays :-P *
It's been ages since I did a DIY hacks video so getting my Tony Hart / Blue Peter on (no sticky backed plastic though)and this one is a windshield or wind screen for those of you with an alcohol or solid fuel stoves - although read on, you could adapt this for a clip on pot windshield for gas canister stoves....
Looking at the various US-based Caldera Cones from the likes of Trail Designs and others as shown here: • THE BEST ALCOHOL STOVE... and the eye-watering cost of purchase, shipping and import fees for the UK - at least £50-£100, depending on which version you buy AND it has to be custom made for your pot, so I decided to make one!
I found the best thing to use is a pizza platter aka the disposable aluminium serving plates which are slightly thicker aluminium from Poundland or any Pound Store (Dollar Store in the US) or places like The Range where I got mine (they are not sponsoring me) - they were £1.50 each so a massive difference using this windscreen! www.therange.co.uk/cooking-an... - get the largest platter/plates you can find, and buy one more than you think you need, you'll probably need it. Don't worry if it's too small, get several and you can fix it together.
You can also use large turkey roasting tins or pie tins, but they seem to be thinner foil, and have to be rolled flat. Or oven liners if you can find those as used in this video • DIY ULTRALIGHT BACKPAC... or • DIY Camping Hack: A $1... - those aren't for Caldera Cones but conical wind shields so the same idea. The aluminum sheet liners seem to be a US thing (we have those PTFE fabric ones), could not find them here? They seem to be thicker aluminium too. Or aluminium flashing, but again, that's hyper expensive per roll - so it's only really cheaper if you have some spare already.
I also used the copper slug tape to secure the joins, not sure how fireproof that is, but it doesn't seem to mind when I used this windshield in a recent stoves video • Sustainable Camping St... - see this for a demonstration of the Caldera Clone windscreen - it makes a MASSIVE difference.
Links for cone template makers - I used: www.blocklayer.com/cone-patterns with Adobe Acrobat Reader, it's free and you can print out a large image over several A4 or A3 pages, make sure you have 100% selected and crop marks, it makes it easier and always test it first with paper before cutting up your sheet/platter!
Other cone template sites:
boxshot.com/conical-label-cal...
www.templatemaker.nl/en/cone/ - and this is the tool that never worked for me zenstoves.net/PotStands-Conic...
If you need to put it in your pot, you can make your own split cone, but that requires a lot more engineering, something like this • DIY Split Caldera Cone... or something like this, also cone based • How to make lightweigh... - maybe make one that works for both?
This was based off a few other videos, some seem rather over-engineered for my tastes and my budget (I don't have tinsnips, single hole punches or my own workshop! Also weirdly sheet aluminium is expensive to buy even in small quantities online) but I got the aluminium platter idea from another video which i would link, but I can't find it atm - apologies if that's yours sorry! Scrolled through all my history, searched, can't find it.
This also gave me some hints, as well as being a way you could adapt this for gas canister stoves: • How To Make A Clip On ...
DIY Cone 3 - Info on flashing and good info showing you how to draw a cone yourself, but why not use the tool? • MakingCalderaCone 0001
Another DIY cone, but is only for that specific TOAKS pot: • DIY Caldera Cone and this one requires a workshop and tools - • DIY Caldera Cone
Same idea but with pop/soda can aluminium, you might struggle to get a can one tall enough for bigger pots though - I have seen beer cans used for windhshields, but the cone curve needs a lot of height for anything other than a tiny pot • DIY - Alcohol Stove V2... or • The best windscreen fo...
Simple pot stand for an alcohol backpacking stove • Simple pot stand for a...
DIY Pot Stand: • DIY Alcohol Stove Pot ...
Another pot stand from wire: • THE BEST Backpacker's ...
According to some commenters I am personally poisoning the world with aluminium! 'Hide User From Channel' has gotten a fair bit of use in the last 3 weeks *cough Don't clog up my channel with c0nspir4cy ch3mtr4il cl1m4te ch4ng3 d3ny1ng w00. This is a friendly place that doesn't hate science..Take it elsewhere.

Very cool project 👍 I think one could very easily mod one of those cheap aliexpress titanium winscreens to be in that shape. They have two tiny magnets so you can roll them fully up for transport

Yes I have one of those, I find it less useful than my DIY Caldera, but I did think you could mod it with a clip to do something similar, or move the magnet somehow.

Aluminum roof flashing is cheap, widely available and a small roll can make several cones.

I looked for that stuff, it's all 20-30 UKP a roll here. Could not find it cheaply in the UK at all.

12” x 10 ft roll of 36 gauge aluminum foil cost me just under $20 to make several standard windscreens to give away to friends.
