Today I'm giving you my ultimate history of tape echo. Today I'm giving you my ultimate history of tape echo. Is there an echo in here? Tell me about Les Paul in the comments: favorite song, lack of awareness, etc... ! Thanks!
Correction - At the two-minute mark, we say the Ray Butts Echosonic was used on all Elvis's Sun recordings, but according to Scotty Moore, he used a 1952 Tweed Deluxe for the first eleven Elvis sessions at Sun studios. Thanks Jake for the heads up!

In the late ‘60’s I had a Watkins Copycat. We used to let the tape loops wear out before changing them, so the repeats got darker and darker. We also used to deliberately slow down the capstan roller with a finger to get random modulation effects, and I liked playing with a tape that had been caught up in the works at some point and was all crinkled, so it gave random drop-outs and modulation. I also experimented with a tape that I joined in a mobius loop so it would alternate from normal side to back side....

It is special "Lubricated": tape that is no longer made. They call it a "Bin" I have seen giant 2" tape bins for high speed Cassette duplication running that were taller than me at an angle 7 or 8 feet. the bin reduces capstan problems and is continuous. I always liked watching a new piece of tape load in a Roland. They came in little soft plastic boxes about the size of Tic Tacs

What a wonderful vintage piece! Tommy Bolin used echoplex on sooo many great records from rock to jazz fusion. My favorite that he played on was Billy Cobham Spectrum album. I saw Jeff Beck a few years ago and he played a song from that album Stratus. Tommy Bolin is a long lost wonderful talent taken too early from drug OD.

Honestly I've wondered for a while if technically Hollywood films did multitrack first. The Wizard of Oz has seperate tracks for sfx, music, and dialogue, and Disney's Fantasia is the first movie in surround sound.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 4 года назад
Don’t forget his wife. She was also using the multi-tracking to get killer sounds. They sold 5 or 6 million records in just the 50s. I know Les was the tech guy, but she was so open to new technology, and could use it well. I remember in high school when I first came across videos of them performing and talking, and I just thought, “damn, he found the perfect woman. She’s beautiful, can sing beautifully, and is a badass on guitar! What more could I ever want?”

In the early 90's, I saw an NOS Univox tape echo for sale for $75 at a music store closeout. When I got it home, I noticed it didn't come with a tape cassette, and the store didn't have any for sale, so I got my money back. I still kick myself for that. Another of my tape echo related regrets. A year or two ago, a friend brought me a Roland Chorus Echo that looked brand new, to get the pots cleaned. I asked why it looked so good, and he said the guy he bought it from bought two, and stuck the backup in the closet, where it sat till my friend bought it. Brand. New. My friend had bought it to flip it. Didn't even know how to turn it on. A few months later, he offered it to me for $1000, and I had to pass it up, because I didn't have the cash.

Phenomenal episode, Josh! Your “history of” episodes are always fascinating and love your sense of humor in everything you do. I was fortunate enough to see Les Paul perform when I was 13 while he still played every Monday night at the Iridium in NYC. He did a meet and greet at the end of the night and signed my pick guard from my Epiphone Les Paul Custom and a CD of his. Hard to pick a favorite tune, but I always start out with “How High the Moon,” “Bye Bye Blues,” or “Meet Mister Callaghan.”

Josh, first off, I'm a long time watcher, first time commenting ( I'm not shy, just Canadian). You need never apologize for the amount of gear you have, Sir. Your abundance of gear might sound boastful but in reality without your obsession with guitar gear you might never felt the need to mod an existing pedal to improve it, thus making many more people happy to have a new tone, or option to use to create a new tone. Really, isn't that what this is all about? As for Les Paul, I have to go with some of his work with Mary Ford. Legendary of course is "How High the Moon" but closer to my heart is "Goodnight Irene" which was the name of my Wife who passed away two years ago. At 49 she lost her battle with type 1 diabetes and now at 53 to help cope with the loss of her I bought a guitar and an amp and am learning to play because you are never too old to learn. I really like the videos you and Nick put out, I love learning about all the pedals out there and the history of the most popular effects. Please keep up the great work!! Take care - Dave

@@stjames3410 His Ep-2 wasn't an Ep-s, it was actually a Sireko, which was an economy model of the Echoplex. I am lucky enough to own an EP-2 that was serviced by Mike Battle when he owned Tubeplex.

Brian Setzer said it best of the Echoplex - You look at it, it goes out of tune lol. Why he uses the Roland

@@circuitsandcigars1278 I've owned a EP-4 for 20 years. Bought it off an old honky-tonk guitar player. He told me he spilled a lot of drinks on it and it looks like it. Works perfectly. Setzer is overstating his opinion.

My Korg SE-300 definitely sounds more "Hi-Fi" than my RE-201... less hum and noise, the spring is darker and less splashy than the Roland. Love them both :)
@thehivecolin
@thehivecolin 4 года назад
The other nice thing about the Korg is that since you switch tape heads with a button rather than turning a knob, you can flip back and forth between different delay lengths easily and instantaneously, so it's very easy to make fancy dub moves on it. Although the RE-201 definitely sounds more like the units they used in classic dub songs

Now does the Binson Echorec qualify as a “tape” echo? It used a magnetic drum instead of tape. Also, Josh, there are original Binson units available on Reverb all the time. There were even a handful of dead mint units up for sale a few months ago that were brand new, but 100% made out of original NOS parts. They were positively stunning.

Great episode Josh! I recently purchased a 1965 Gibson GA4-RE Reverb Echo Tel Ray oil can delay w/ foot switch at an estate sale . I didn’t even know these existed but when I saw the motor and the tubes I had to have it. After cleaning it up I plugged it in and the Motor still turned, changed a tube an it works. It’s a little noisy ( needs re-capped) but very cool.
