Thats what we hope too. Old 4WDS are relatively easy as the assembly is simple and the shapes are easy to work with. Newer cars have a lot of strange shapes and fasteners that make them better to assemble by robots but hard to work on by humans. The labour cost is a challenge

@@Jauntmotors you must build a smaller kit that bolts on the a standard puma that still has an engine in. Like adding a turbo but better. Would be amazing

We need a bit more torque to do that. But we're looking at an optional single reduction gear between motor and original transfer case

So what about this modern 2 speed gearbox with lockable diff : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4_yw5ySXDf4.html You could use it in place of the original transfer case by simply rotating the assembly 90 degrees. Engine could be mounted directly to it, or kept under the hood and connected to the gearbox through a regular drive shaft. Does that sound crazy to you ?

Alternatively you can always slap a Powerglide 2 speed (without torque converter) to your motor: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ie7qvo-aC5k.html. I kinda love the idea of keeping the motor under the hood and connecting it to the transfer case with a drive shaft, because that would probably let you delete the transmission tunnel, have a fully flat cabin floor and a happy middle passenger.

It's a debate we had internally. The challenge is the series drum hand brakes aren't great, and require continual adjustment. without an internal combustion engine there is nothing stopping the car from rolling but the handbrake - no compression in the electric motor when left in gear. So we had to put something more powerful in, and the disc is much much stronger. Easier for most people to keep it clean than adjust the drum

@@Jauntmotors Sounds like the rest of the vehicle, it was very well thought through. I've never had or worked on a Land Rover and wasn't aware of the specific downsides on that handbrake drum.

If you want to shift you can wring a lot more speed out of the system. Its only 230Nm so not crazy amounts of torque

The centre of gravity is a bit lower. About 50-100kg heavier overall. We use parabolic springs and the shocks are a bit stiffer than stock

We could absolutely make something fit. It's all very modular. Electric KITT would be amazing. 80's sports cars look like they should be electric

Just amount of batteries and the associated cost. We can fit nearly double the batteries in one of these vehicles. Wether a 1973 Land Rover really needs to travel that far is a different question.

Theres always space for more batteries, you've just got to want to pay for them and need to drive that far. With the Tesla motor builds they're doing they're restricted to 16 modules, no more, no less. We can do on a minimum of 5 and up to 20

We wish we could have a fixed, published price, but theres so many variables and with an 18 month wait list the price today won't be the price in a year. While our labour time (and cost) is coming down, component prices are going up. Batteries went up 15% this month for example. As we grow in volume we'll have more stock and will be able to lock down pricing. Still expensive for the next few years though.

A complete vehicle, fully restored and converted starts from AUD $180k. A conversion only is about half that.

Range anxiety is still a thing, particularly here in Australia with less than the best charging infrastructure, though theres thousands now. This car has about a 250km range which is about all you want to do in an old Land Rover in a day anyway. The public charge port I'm using in this video is powered by wind energy, and the ultimate home for this vehicle has a solar setup they'll be using to charge. Unfortunately most of our energy in Australia is from coal, but the carbon emissions from using form of electricity in a battery electric vehicle are still way less than the original petrol motor.

Further to my engine noise comment , I saw someone yesterday wearing Bose noise cancelling headphones whilst driving an ex-army 130 ragtop . Had to laugh .
