Today on the channel I am driving a 2015 Rolls Royce Phantom VII (Series 2) EWB - the flagship Rolls Royce and one of the biggest cars on sale in the world. It was so large, it requires side reflectors like a truck. But, is it worth the hassle of trying to park it?

I owned a Phantom back in 2009, absolutely loved it. One neat touch was the owners manual that was tailor made specifically for that car and that car only, meaning there were no references to options/features the car didnt have. Only downside was the disappointment on the face of the public when I wasn't a celebrity climbing out of it

The RR Phantom is indeed an incredible car, and one that I was seriously interested in owning...up until I test drove one. I ended up buying a Ghost, and here in a nutshell is why. Firstly, while no modern Rolls is exactly 'under the radar' the Phantom is so 'in your face' that there is no such thing as an incognito journey Secondly, while no modern Rolls is exactly 'small' the Phantom is so big it renders many journey's (especially those that involve parking it somewhere) as just too awkward. Thirdly, the turning circle is not exactly 'user friendly'...... So it was I ended up buying the Ghost. Without any regrets. Ownership of a Rolls Royce is (in my experience) without parallel, and never a journey goes by that I don't appreciate how fortunate I am.....
@BibtheBoulder
@BibtheBoulder 2 года назад
@@dizzy2020 I guess it depends on what you want the Phantom for, and why you are buying it. Sure, if you are a CEO and wish to work as you are chauffeured along then it is reasonable to assume you are not likely to drive it. However, I am not a CEO, and I have 4 children who I need to accommodate. The Phantom was ideal from a size perspective. Nonetheless, the Ghost is also plenty roomy enough, and easier to park when we go out. "you also don't choose a Rolls to be unobtrusive"...I chose a Rolls because I enjoy quality and it is without parallel in that department. I also want a vehicle that is reliable. Past experience of the Bentley marque shows them to be generally 'hit & miss' at best, or I may well have opted for a Mulsanne. The Ghost is rather like a beautiful topless lady on a beach. You know most people will notice, but unlikely stare. The Phantom is akin to the same beautiful lady stripping off totally. Everyone will look, and plenty will stare...
@PMKeates
@PMKeates 2 года назад
You are right, the Phantom is definitely not for the faint of heart. It is imposing and you make your presence known, everywhere. I wouldn't say it's in your face though, it's an elegant car in my opinion. I made the comments to James about the comparison to the Ghost and the difficulty in parking exactly in reference to your second comment. However, I don't find it awkward per se - it's just a fact of life. In reality you still adjust what you do with the Ghost over, say, a Ford Fiesta. In terms of the turning circle, I definitely don't find this an issue. It's a very long car - yes - but there's a good steering lock/angle, and the shape of the car makes it possible to manoeuvre quite close to other objects and get you in and out of where you need to be. What is more difficult is when you have lanes flanked by concrete with tight turning angles, these can be a bit worrying and you must take them very slowly indeed.

I'm more than happy to see these on here in part due to it being more than unlikely I'll get anywhere near one for a whole bunch of reasons! Interesting that you mentioned RR going into electric cars and that they'd probably be one of the brands best suited for it because I can absolutely see that evolution whereby it was a little trickier with some others. Great vid, thanks.

Rolls is absolutely perfect to go electric because very Rolls owner is actually travelling a thousand miles with them and for the city and 3 hour trips, electric vehicles can be much more luxurious

Especially since they spend thousands of Pounds to make them extra quiet in the interior. And EVs are already quite, plus with their insane amount of torque, electric motors are a better choice to get a car that heavy off the line.

@ChristianRThomas
@ChristianRThomas 2 года назад
Yup, since you asked, I really enjoyed that. It's actually the other half of where I started loving cars and high quality engineering as a child. In many ways it epitomises the engineering side more than most performance cars because of, as you say, the depth of quality. At school we were equally excited by a Phantom VI or Corniche as by any Ferrari or even the Muira. We also had the (then) new XJ6 to marvel at as a sort of crossover, or possibly the Interceptor. And James Bond was in his DB5 so that was seriously wow! What in fact captured our imagination and amazement the most, though briefly, was The Beast, if you know that car; a 200mph saloon powered by a 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin style engine, similar to what was in a Lancaster bomber and fronted with a Rolls Royce grille - again emphasising how quality and Rolls Royce were then synonymous. So it's fabulous to see that desire for quality return. We were to become somewhat disabused of Rolls being the pinnacle of cars in secondary school, as we discovered that the engine really wasn't very powerful, that they weren't properly fast and that the engineering was, well, heavy engineering. Jensen went bust, of course, Aston were struggling and most of the Rollers were soon painted brown. So speed became what counted, and our eyes feasted on the Ferrari 308, the Countach and the Esprit. And that's where I stayed pretty much ever since, having now owned Lotuses for nearly 30 years. But all three of those cars are pretty much flung together, with the Italians probably being the worst offenders. Not that I need to tell you, but for other people reading this, the Lotus reputation for poor fit, finish and reliability is actually very undeserved, even if there was some truth to it a long time ago with the early 907 engine. These shortcomings have all been addressed in more modern cars but still the quality of thought, and forethought, in the engineering doesn't match the ideals laid down by Messrs. Rolls and Royce. Modern exotics are still not "forever" cars, and there is invariably some sort of cheapskatery visible in all of them; the trick now being to hide the shortcuts rather than avoid them. The solutions have come through technology, which to some extent implies cost-cutting, rather than craftsmanship and spending the proper amount of money. It's profit driven rather than product driven and a huge amount of know-how has been lost along the way (an example of which is leatherwork, which has been so devalued that even Connolly is no more). Yes, this is as valid a part of the motoring story as pushing the limits of performance and I think we innately feel that fact when we drive cars that are made with this in mind. And they do very much belong on your channel. If there were anything I would ask it would be to go into greater depth on these areas of high quality workmanship since you're not going to be talking about performance stats and F1 derived aero parts. Having written all this (I'm sorry it's a little long) I would go as far as to say that more videos like this would serve to balance up my appreciation of cars in general, and probably everyone else's too.

Matthew Potter. Me too, but this is way out of my league. I recently bought a '93 Ford Fairlane, but at "only" 5.22m long and with a 4.0L straight six, it's only a pup compared to this, but at $5100 it is what was suited to my budget (less than a set of tyres for the Rolls). Still hope to be able to afford a mid "90's Bentley Turbo R someday. Cheers!

I'd love to see you compare 'ancestors' as well, how brands have developed. Examples like 1980's Aston V8 vs DBS, E46 M3CSL vs M4CSL, RR Shadow vs this Phantom.

For being 20 feet long it drives very well. I drive it sometimes for fun. When I go to places that tend to be busy and parking is a pain in the ass. I just have one of my chauffeurs drive me in it. Its the ideal car to be driven in. The only other car that compares is the Maybach 62. But Phantom EWB still commands more of a presence in my opinion. As far as running cost I'd say its a lot like owning a yacht, consistent and not cheap.

I worked for Rolls Royce and on these phantoms for a number of years. Although the engineering beneath is cruder than the ghost, they’re definitely better put together. E.g. where the ghost would use BMW based plastic clips etc designed for volume production, the phantom has big screws and chunky brackets keeping everything in place. They’re as solid as a bank vault. 💪🏻

Amazing how times have changed when luxury means how large the infotainment screen is. Give quality of build and materials evertime! (I must be getting old 😅)

Thoroughly enjoyed this video and all the other car related content on your channel. The first drive by was like the new Topgun movie but filmed with a jumbo jet! I always felt my little Jaaag saloon was a little bit of luxury but the roller is on a completely different level or planet! Keep up the great work James, could you do a review of Lawrie's beat up BMW Mini or his Robin?

Love how you use foot pounds primarily, over NM, I adjust from standard to metric in everything except NM can't be bothered counting back

I used to own a Silver Spirit and looked at buying a Phantom. The things that bothered me with the SZ cars didn’t bother me half as much as the things that bothered with the phantom. It didn’t feel hand made. Lots of the interior parts felt plastic. The hidden and awkward seat controls was one of the things that bothered me. I bought a Silver Spur and love it. It feels genuinely hand made and special.

It is funny, the hidden seat controls is one of the things I love about it the most and attracted me to the Phantom over virtually any other car.

The old cars did not have much technology. They had speedometer, heating controls, radio, buttons for seating and a steering wheel. The buttons for seating were on display because they were easy to access, easy to use and easy to make yourself supremely comfortable. When I seen the seat controls on the side of the seat or behind a lid it just made me feel like every other car. Also you can tell the wood inside my car is real. I have no doubt the phantom uses real wood but it looks like the wood on a Jaguar or even my old rover. I love the phantom and is no doubt one of the best cars ever made. Just an observation.

I think that little tray in the dash could actually be specced with a groved tray to hold cigars. Can't have them just rolling about now, can we?

I am probably in a group of one but I find Rolls Royce design to be inspired by an aerodynamic brick. No doubting the engineering, but it is a car that is probably more impressive inside looking out than from outside looking in.

Aerodynamics smacks of efficiency, which smacks of budget. Never mention it again :)

This generation really was a step-change in providing presence and arrival. The razor edge body, suicide doors and unapologetic dimensions were insightful.
