Last year I backed the Omnicharge Indiegogo campaign with a specific goal in mind, could I combine the Omni 20 with the TS100 direct DC soldering iron? Let's unbox them and find out! :D

🎇 2020 update 🎇
Since this video, a lot has changed and improved!
The TS100 is still a great iron, but harder to power from a powerbank (need special type like in the video).
They now also have a TS80: geni.us/UMA98Yp which can be powered using Quick-Charge 2.0 and 3.0 up to 18w
And the very newest TS80p: geni.us/luS1 which can be used with USB-PD making lots and lots of powebanks and chargers compatible!
Example powerbank which makes for a great combination: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_dSVkSRy
-------------------------------------------------
Omnicharge Omni 20: geni.us/9IXd
TS100 soldering iron with tip here: geni.us/ImSb
(The Omni 13 does not have direct DC out!)
The cable I used to connect the TS100 was the 5.5*2.5 (Lenovo) cable.The port on the Omni charge itself is a 5.5 x 2.1mm barrel plug port.

Pretty cool thinking & now I'm gonna copy & use on the road when "need" to solder electronic components on the fly for laptop, networking, etc repairs. Thanks so much! Now don't have to bring item back to workshop,mor lug my soldering workstation to the place I'm at, if doing onsite call! Awesome‼️

$250 power supply for a soldering iron....yeah, hard pass on that. I recommend re-purposing LION bat pack for Makita/Dewalt/(insert portable tool of choice) with a mated usb or DC 12v adapter. That way you can use the battery pack for ALL your tools, including your iron.

The Omnicharge has been one of my best Kickstarter perks of all time (and I have backed over 140 Kickstarter projects). It is incredibly versatile and very useful in and out of the shop since it can power most anything reliably and safely.

I have an Omnichage, I fucking love it to death, worth every penny, and I have just ordered this iron. I thought I was gonna be the first with this setup, to be honest... it's a match made in heaven for portable soldering.

hi! i still didnt understand whats the connector tip for? Omnicharge said we should choose a connector tip for our laptop type (hp/dell/etc), yet, it seems like this connector doesn't help connect my HP laptop to the Omnicharge. The wiring doest make sense. Did you manage to understand it? Also, theres another weird cable added (USB charging cable) which in one end has the same connector tip (which fits the rounded barrel input of the Omnicharge), And on the other end its a male-USB. Is it for charging the Omnicharge itself?

It's cool to watch the wattage will go up when you heat the solder. It'll actually go up to 60W on 24V

Nice Iron. But a nice tip: don't wipe off the solder when you are done! Always keep solder on the tip. Only wipe it just before use. That's how you can keep a soldering tip in perfect shape for many years :)

A coat of solder blocks the tip from interacting with oxygen. Oxygen will cause the tip to oxidize and it's exponentially oxidized the more heat that is applied. That's why it's also important not to leave your tip heated between long periods of use. Oxidation is what kills tips.

Better tip: Always, always use solder tip tinner/cleaner compound when through with a job. 1> Scrape tip with brass coil cleaner 1> sponge off with water 3> apply tin/cleaner compound. You will get a shinny new tip surface that will resist oxidation and be ready the next time you need it.

I guess it wasn't available when this video was uploaded but these days you can buy the TS80 USB-C soldering iron and a 20$ Quickcharge 3 powerbank. Similar performance, smaller footprint, way cheaper. You could also have powered the TS100 with a cheap Li-Po or some 18V battery from a power tool. No need for a 289€ (really!!?) power bank.

I’m looking for a kit that does this, but with a power cord long enough to move around. Sadly, these are not available in usable form, and you have to know serial numbers or something to get a plug that fits. I’ve been reading reviews and people have tons of plugs that look right but don’t work. You need a soldering iron to make this soldering iron into something you can use. Very cool, but not for the plug and play hobbyist like me.

You can go to good will and buy a discarded power supply for a lap top that will run your ts 100 cheap!!! Look for 20 to 22 volts. You can look for 24 volts but those lap top units are usually 22 or so.

Actually an omnicharge is not necessary. Get 2 laptop batteries which I can easily find for 15$. Build a 4s3p battery pack and add a balance charging BMS. There you go. Under $50, you can get roughly 100Wh capacity, which can heat up the soldering iron for 4 hours of continious heating, which the iron cuts the heat when the set tempreture reached.

£318 in the uk for the power supply, TS100 costs £53. they look pretty together and the power bank has some great specs but i think it's a little extreme. I'd rather use a large lipo with an adapter and controller. for maybe £60/£70 total.

Omnicharge is REALLY expensive. Anker Powerhouse has the 6 times capacity and only the double price. It does not have an adjustable DC output, but you can easily use a step up converter or a laptop adapter to the AC output.

And if you buy a $20 extension cord you can use someone else’s power. Pretty sure people are going for an EDC type setup.
@ELVTechnology
@ELVTechnology 6 лет назад
The HVDC setting I do not believe is related to the DC output. I think it changes the waveform of the AC output to high voltage DC. Presumably it might be more efficient for devices which can use it (switch mode power supplies?) but could be damaging to other AC devices you might connect - be careful.
@IntermitTech
@IntermitTech 6 лет назад
You are correct, that's why I mentioned in an overlay that HVDC should only be used together with switch mode power supplies for like laptops and such.
@ELVTechnology
@ELVTechnology 6 лет назад
Intermit.Tech Ah. Overlays don't work on mobile devices so I wouldn't have seen it. One of the reason's they retired the feature (I'd rather they just made them work on mobile though as there's no real way to add information afterwards now).

For general purpose use, a butane iron might suffice. However many PCBs require temperature control and quick recovery, which butane irons don't provide.

Not true at all. The TS100 is in almost EVERY quadcopter fliers backpack... Priceless for repairing a popped wire in the field. Also, you can use a 4S LiPo battery. The TS100 allows you to set a lower range, even, so that it does not damage your LiPo...

@IntermitTech

Well yes, but no, that's not what this product is for. It's for people who do not know what a 4s or 6s Lipo pack is, or have a charger for it, or want to make a case for it, the cables, BMS, etc.. Yes it's cheaper, but nowhere near as convenient. If you have knowledge about all those things, by all means, build it yourself, but if you don't and just need mobile power, the OmniCharge is excellent. :)

Much better option for a battery pack then that overpriced $199 brick your using. Plus cable way to short and not silicone to be useable, as would be too much of a pain in the ass to be useable and easy to melt cable when it gets in the way and not heat resistant material like silicone.

Despite being less than intellectually privileged, you managed to find a decent combination of electronics. Please try to be safe and remember to put a resistor to the anode of your LEDs (that's the long side) so that you don't burn the out after a few milliseconds. Watch a video on setting up LEDs if you need to. Might I suggest Great Scott's channel or EEVblog or even ElectroBOOM... they all have great EE (electrical engineering) educational channels, and I'm sure they all cover how to set up simple LED circuits. And remember a soldering iron can burn you and your things, and can even catch carpet, drapes, sofas, etc on fire. Always double check your soldering station. Also be mindful that, that pinches style iron doesn't have very big finger guards so be carful not to let your finger slip off the grip and touch the heat dissipation sheath as this will likely cause you to drop the iron after being burned, risking fire via falling on things like carpet and drapes etc. Sorry to imply that I feel the need to think for you, but the way you conduct yourself in your video truly leads me to this belief, so it is only out of concern that I say these things. I believe in natural selection, but not at the risk of bystanders.
