Taking a TBI from a SBC and performing the recommended performance modifications from the internet. I added a 15 PSI spring to the fuel regulator, installed an ⅜” injector spacer, and removed the ridges around the intake for the throttle body. Increased air flow and fuel pressure is assured to HP for my truck. According to the internet there should be a gain of 47 HP with these mods. I don’t believe it but I'll go ahead and continue bad financial decisions and test it out.
A few weeks ago I found a small coolant leak around the intake of my Small Block Chevy 350. After ignoring it for a while then misdiagnosing it. I thought the intake gasket on my engine was leaking coolant. I ordered new intake gaskets, and they were back ordered for a while. While these parts were backordered I was allowed to ponder. I eventually ordered all the recommended parts to make a SBC TBI gain more HP. I took advice straight from the internet and ordered all the parts to make my engine run at peak performance. Let’s see if the mods actually do anything.

hey also put a spacer between the TBI unit and the intake that really works about 1or 2 inch will do it

Yeah, I put one of those on a while back. I will reinstall it when I put everything back together.

What is suppose to happen when you change that spring, My ambition is fuel economy, is that for fuel economy??@@crescenthammer
@crescenthammer
@crescenthammer 5 месяцев назад
@Brian-gx7yx these TBIs are difficult to tune. The spring is a way to tune it. Bigger spring more fuel psi equals more fuel injected per injector pulse.
@jerkey
@jerkey 4 месяца назад
@@crescenthammerdid you do other modifications to where the spring was needed to balance or can the spring be added regardless to help?

Milled the air horn, rebuilt, and the cop car injectors, and custom chip, mentioned in other post. If I need more I will use a big block Tbi and have another custome chip made.

Were you able to use the higher fuel pressure spring with the stock fuel pump? I've had people tell me I have to get a different fuel pump too. Im cheap so id rather not blow that kind of money on this lol
@crescenthammer
@crescenthammer 9 месяцев назад
I put the high pressure spring in it, but I didn't see too much difference, except 10 mpg. I put the stock spring back in. It felt the same, but I got 12 mpg. I little while later, my fuel pump went out. I honestly don't think you need a bigger spring unless you do some bigger mods than I did.

I have been running the stock spring for about 4 months now, and it runs as good as ever.

@crescenthammer thanks for the quick and thorough reply! I haven't done any big mods to my truck yet so I guess I'll keep the stock spring. All I've done is an EGR delete, smog pump delete, cat delete, flowmaster style muffler with 3 inch exhaust pipe, 4 inch tall filter and chrome air cleaner and about 4 inches of air cleaner spacers. Just cheap simple little mods. It runs great like it is but I could always use more. ;)

@Sc0teeBe318 I'd say with those mods, save your money for something else, and keep the stock spring.

I wonder how this would work? Say you get a vintage 1992 454 throttle body and a Chevrolet Performance LSX 454 Long Block Crate Engines 19417357. Would the Throttle Body work on a newer motor like that?
@crescenthammer
@crescenthammer 6 месяцев назад
Just have to wire and tune it. You could do a stand-alone system. Get inputs from the engine sensors (as many or as few a you want) and throttle pedal.
@ericmesi1764
@ericmesi1764 6 месяцев назад
What I was thinking is leave everything original original 454 throttlebody computer OBD one all original if that would work on a new type LSX engine?
@crescenthammer

@ericmesi1764 yeah I supposed. Distributor vs cam position sensor would be difficult to figure out, but b in sure you could.

Did the modifications to the TBI improve acceleration or fuel economy?
@crescenthammer
@crescenthammer Год назад
Acceleration was improved, and cruising speed was improved. It used to have to work to maintain 85, and now I'm barely a quarter throttle cruisin at 85. Fuel milage went down, I'm pretty sure that's because of the 15 PSI fuel regulator spring. I'm sure with stock spring, it would improve milage.

@@crescenthammer Thanks for answering my question. The TBI unit on my Chevy truck needs to be rebuilt and I would like to increase performance if possible.
@matthewmiller2268
@matthewmiller2268 4 месяца назад
@@crescenthammerYeah honestly shouldn't need any more than 13, 13.5 psi... And install an 18 psi fuel pressure regulator spring... Timing also needs to be modified with a dynamod performance ignition module and initial spark timing advance should be set around between 10° and 12° btdc. Also you want the throttle body bores including the spacer to be rough like rough sandpaper on the inside to help with atomization and to keep the atomized fuel particles in suspension because once they hit the intake manifold especially the heat from the exhaust crossover it helps to ultra vaporize the incoming air fuel charge as it's heading towards the intake valves in each port... The smaller you can get the atomized fuel particles the better which helps increase power and torque production, but also increases fuel economy.

You're not gaining nothing the only way you're going to make some gain is you're going to have to have a board out to 600 CFM I just did a stroker motor and all that stuff you're doing just wasting your time cuz maybe you need a bigger fuel pump too you need a fuel pump on like a 454 vehicle anyway that's the story you're just wasting your time I'm sure you're and you can't get any more fuel pressure than your fuel pump will push
