Today, I have recorded a video with D5200. I wish I could watch your video before. Really helpful to understand the tips. Autofocus destroyed my videos. I could realize very late...
I hope you are doing better health wise, thanks for the video, very good work and nice and clear deliver of the content... And also the music, I was very surprise when I saw it was your music too... Best of luck for you, have a great day...!
Another question- When using manual focus for vlogging, how do you successfully adjust for where you’re going to stand? My remote is also no help. And sometimes I don’t have a second person.
Place something in the shot where you are going to be and focus on that. You can use a plush toy, a light stand, or anything else. The other technique I use is to stand/sit where I'm going to be in the shot and take a photo either on a timer or with a remote with Auto focus. Check that you are in focus in the photo then switch over to manual focus to make sure the camera doesn't change focus when you start filming. 🙂
Well done! Should the lcd screen reflect the exposure, as you are adjusting, in live mode? In other words, if you go from 2.8 to 16, shouldn't the lcd screen reflect that light to dark, effect on lcd screen, (rather than remain constant.)
Ronald, I think you can get the LCD screen to change according to your settings but for the life of me, I can't remember how to set this up. I'll get back to you. 😉
@@photographersfreedom Thanks for response. I re figured it out. I say re figured, cause I had this camera before, sold it, and have been using the Sony RX10II, But it's all coming back to me now. Am using the D5200 now only with the Tokina 11-16mm lens for real estate video and photography. (That's what age does to ya) 83.
Hi great video. I have Nikon d5600. But if I have to shoot sports with moving subjects how do I do it with manual focus? If I try to use the autofocus it tries to focus continuously and the noise of the focus is heard. Thank you
Hi. Unfortunately, that is the problem with earlier Nikon DSLRs like the 5600. It's not really possible to film sports or any kind of action with manual focus. You just have to leave the autofocus on and deal with the focus hunting. To combat the noise of the focus motor, you need to use an external mic and position it off-camera a little. Don't use the internal camera mic.
Thanks for your comment Masihullah. Yes, you could definitely use the D5200 for RU-vid videos with your 50mm lens. If you are vlogging, a 50mm is perfect. You can get a nice, soft blurry background with that lens.
thank you so much! I have Nikon D5200 this video very helpful for D5200 users! when I went to Airport for photo shoots also a video too in Japan, Japanese PEOPLE said to me "You have a good camera, but old!" I feel so shame and I'm not going to taking a photo and video shoots again. I feel... I wanna try watching your advice I'm not afraid anymore:) thank you so much again!
I own a D5200 and a D750.Nobody has ever asked me which camera I use or cared about the lens also.I bet ,nobody of those who told you your camera is old can guess by looking at a picture if it was taken by a D5200 with a kit lens.Using the latest gear is not everything, the most important is to enjoy taking pictures that you like ☺
I’m just starting and know nothing about using a camera to video. Can I use a larger memory card than 4gb. My camera is 5 years old. This was a great place to start to learn about this camera. Thanks.
Hi. Thanks for your comment. I suggest using a 64gb or 128gb sd card. Video takes up a lot of space. You won't get much video onto a 4gb card. Are you using a D5200?
@@LiveItReal that depends on what you are filming, and your budget. For my RU-vid videos I use a Boya by-m1 lavalier mic amzn.to/2DoERto which gives good quality audio at a cheap price. The best and probably most popular mic for recording voice is the Rode VideoMic Pro + amzn.to/2OoSPC0. This is a shotgun mic, so it will only record sound that is in front of the mic and won't pic up too much ambient sound from the environment. If you want to record great stereo ambient sound I suggest a Zoom H6 amzn.to/2QSAdMp. I've used this for years. It's great for recording music and as a field recorder. 🙂
I want to record songs with guitar. I have following questions: 1. I have bought a RODE Video MIC Go for the above. How will it do with nikon 5200? 2. When I connect this external microphone, in the camera settings I will turn the microphone off??
Thanks for your questions. I can't really say about your first question, I assume it will work fine. If it doesn't, let me know. In answer to your 2nd question; yes, turn the microphone off as that is the setting for the internal microphone. Make sure you set your Manual Sensitivity in the Microphone settings so that the level meter peaks at around -12dB when your playing at your loudest. This way, you won't record it too "hot" and get clipping which will ruin the audio. 🙂
Thanks, I’m using my Nikon 5200 to film so Wakeboarding. So filming some kickers or other rails from the dock using a tripod. They guy at the shop just told me to use the sports mode but I was wondering if you could help me getting better results using Manually ? I’m either filming from the side or front and I have a 70-300 zoom Cheers
Stupid question time! Will I get better videos using my D5200 over my GoPro Hero5? I've always used my camera for shooting stills but never in video mode.
That's actually a great question Mark. I have never owned a Hero 5, but I assume their footage is better than the Hero 3 which I use. I would say that you will get "different" videos from the 2. The GoPro has that unique wide-angle view which you have to edit out in post, whereas the D5200 (depending on what lens you use), will give you a less distorted view. I think there is something about the look of DSLR footage that you just can't beat. I guess it depends on what you are videoing, and what you're using the footage for. I hope that answers your question? 🙂
Is video stored on the memory card or internally? Thought it was internally, and I shot some video a while ago that now I can’t figure out how to play back. Maybe it was on a card, and I lost it. ..hope not. Thanks for the video!
I'm holding the +/- button while rotating the command dial, but the aperture won't change and remains at 3,5 no matter which way I rotate. Can it be that this is the only aperture available for my lens? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm a total newbie mate
You might have Manual Movie Settings turned on in your Movie Settings Menu. Either switch that to Off, or turn off live view, change your aperture and go back into Live View. 😉
@@photographersfreedom That worked thanks :) Also regarding the mic, I think the option ''microphone off'' switches off the option to record audio altogether, no matter if you're using the internal or external mic. I just got the ME 1 mic for the camera and once I turned the microphone off, there was no audio being recorded, and I wasn't able to adjust the sensitivity of the external mic either. So I guess the camera switches to the external mic automatically once you plug it in?
So I bought a Nikon D7500 to make videos for my job, however now I am kind of regretting it because I have been looking up tutorials online and lots of people say the continuous autofocus of moving subjects sucks and that the Canon should have been my best bet. This is unfortunate because I will be shooting a lot of events where there is a lot of moving subjects. So my question for you guys is how can I make this situation better? There's no way I can return the D7500 now, we've invested too much into it. We also purchased a lens for it, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. How is this for shooting video/auto-focusing? If it is more of a photography lens I will return it, as it hasn't arrived yet. Someone has recommended the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G as it is more geared toward videography, and has a smooth continuous auto-focus (and it's a lot cheaper). Will this work to help keep the focus on moving subjects? Thanks for your help. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks for your question, I'll give it my best shot. As the D7500 has an in-body focus motor, the lens you use should not really make a difference. The Nikon autofocus system is not the best as it will focus-hunt quite a lot. I suggest you either use manual focus and try to do your best with that. Also, try different settings within AF-C. Depending on what you're filming, you might get better results by experimenting with different focus point amounts. I'm not sure what the D7500 has in regards to focus points as I've never used one, but try this and see if it works. Let me know how you go. 🙂
How do you export the video to your phone? So I have the sd card that I can plug into my phone with an adapter and the videos will not export. I also have the WiFi connective thingy and the app and the videos do not export. I would like to know how. Thanks
Sorry it took me so long to reply, you have probably figured this out by now. Pressing the info button on the top of the camera will cycle through various views on the liveview screen, one of which has a mic level.
Greetings sir. How to get rid of the noise sound when recording video on DSLR NIKON D5200? I've already bought myself an external microphone TNVI V3, but the noise sound is still prevalent. Why was that and what can I do to minimise or eliminate the noise sound altogether?
There's nothing you can do about the noise when recording video with the D5200, other that placing your external mic as far away from the camera as possible.
Hello, I have a problem with an external mic. It's doesn't working. I don't know why it's not working. I looked at settings but there was nothing about set a external mic. So if you can help me I would be thankful!!
I know this is an old video but I was hoping someone would help me. I’m wanting to do walk abouts/vlogs, basically me walking around lovely Australia while videoing my surroundings. How am I able to do this if I have to manually focus all of the time? Seriously considering giving up on Nikon and getting myself a canon 90D
Hi. Thanks for your comment. I would totally suggest that you get a Canon for that type of video, their Autofocus is much better. I can't speak for newer Nikon cameras, as I don't have experience with them. All the conversations I've been part of here on RU-vid, and in the RU-vid video creators group I'm in on Facebook talk about Canon being the best Autofocus. 🙂
Thank you for your quick reply. I’ve put my Nikon up for sale it will be sad to see it go but onto better things! I only stumbled across you yesterday but I’m subscribing because you explain things so well
Help.....I found one online....used shutter life 6000..... for only 389.00 should I take the jump.... I will be recording my boys peewee football and rugby......besides that pics......if I get serious with I will upgrade later
That sounds like a good deal to me. My D5200 has completed at least 5 times that many shutter actuations, probably more and is still going strong. Depending on the quality of video footage you're after, it would be an ok choice. Remember that it only records in 1080, not 4k. It's also only capable of 60 frames per second so if you're after nice, smooth slow motion shots, I would go for something else. The autofocus is going to "hunt" as well so if you decide to buy it, use manual focus when recording. 🙂
@@photographersfreedom this will be my 1st camera......once again just for recording my boys so they can see what their doing in games...... besides video is it good for photography......also I wann learn how to do still shots of traffic with streaks n stuff....... what 3 cameras would you recommend as a do it all camera for a beginner such as myself.....
@@jimmycrackcornidontcare6913 the D3500 is a very popular camera for beginners. It's more compact than the 5200 yet it does most of the things the 5200 does. I recently bought one so I can do tutorial videos for it.
If you are vlogging or filming videos where you just want to record your voice, I suggest a Boya BY-M1 Lavalier mic. They are cheap and really good quality audio. photographersfreedom.com/get/boya-by-m1-lavalier-mic/. For ambient sounds I use a Zoom H6 photographersfreedom.com/get/zoom-h6-portable-recorder/ I also recommend the Rode VideoMic Pro +. It's what a lot of RU-vidrs use and produces really top quality sound. photographersfreedom.com/get/rode-videomic-pro-plus/
Actually, I have checked and my camera is up-to-date. The settings you refer to are only available if you have your Video Mode set for NTSC. I'm in the PAL region. :-)
It has its purpose David. It's good enough for home movies but if you're filming a wedding, or a RU-vid video or something like that then no, it's not good enough. 😉
The only setting I suggested you Google for was the video region, and you are watching this video to learn a hell of a lot about how to set up a D5200 to film video. 😉
Barry Callister Photography there is only 2 regions, why can’t you just say people from Europe use this and those living in America use this settings. As simple as this 😳
