Never thought about it possibly being a manual? Newer cars dont let you turn the engine off if you're not in park. And older ones usually dont let you take the key out

My car has been parked the whole winter without the hand brake to avoid having the brake pads of my rear drum brakes sticking to the drum. So I park it in first gear only. I'm using my hand brake only when not at home like on public parking spots and such.

I has nothing to do with the "handbrake". In the USA, almost all cars have automatic gear boxes, and for the most part, in Drive, even at idle they move. This is why you have to keep you foot on the brake pedal. People have been run over by their own cars because of forgetting to put the selector in "Park". Imagine that you leave your F-150 V8 in drive and step out of the vehicle, trip and fall down underneath. This happened before. There should be a safety feature for those who forget to put their vehicle in park while the engine is running and they decide to step out. To complicate matters, some car makers have complicated the drive modes from being a selector to some kind of electronic button. People are getting easily confused now.

In the USA the 'parking-brake' is usually referred to incorrectly as the 'emergency-brake', plus it's often foot-operated so drivers become very lazy, relying on their automatic-transmission to hold it in 'Park', but that's not what it's designed to do full-time!

Try practicing counter steering, it's amazingly effective in situations like this. In this case he should have (apart from paying attention to what he was doing of course) _pushed_ the handlebar on the right hand side. Push right, go right. Push left, go left. Sounds illogical, but it works. Could save your life sometime.

Almost every car out there has it in the center, even the ones with new electronic press button ones, for EXACTLY this kind of situation where the driver can't do it themselves. I guarantee this older Nissan sedan has it in the center like almost every other car. Why are you guys even trying to defend this? She panicked and did nothing. End of story. I’m also guilty of this. As a pillion passenger, the driver needed to fetch something he’d forgotten from the house, and after making sure I was steady holding the bike said ‘Have you got it?’. I said yes and promptly fell over at 90 degrees. Still have the scars 😂
