@@matthewgould9391 Hey, I found Performance for the "Thermal Mode" and Efficiency for the "OS Power Mode" works well can gives you 20 watts. Then if it's a less demanding game, 1200p looks a lot better than 800p. I found 800p is looking a bit blurry on my device in a lot of games. The latest AMD Driver are working well for me, and it's what I run on the Ally as well. I have a tutorial here if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lT7NdZRMQe4.html.
I remember when the Ally launched and the drivers and firmware were about as bad as the Legion Go's are now. Asus made massive improvements over time (especially in the 15w mode) and hopefully Lenovo will do the same.
The Legion Go, like the Ally when it came out at 15 watts, sets the GPU frequencies lower and therefore performance is poorer. You would have to compare cpu and gpu frequencies and utilisation for the same watts. I appreciate the work behind this video.
One of the best comparisons I’ve seen so far and more in line with what I expected in the up to 20w range. The Go has to use more power for it’s display and the faster ram so it’s short for the APU
don't forget that the Ally alread had many months of software-optimization, while the Legion Go was just born. You should compare it to the 1.0 Software version of the Ally to get a fair comparison.
Wtf 😂. How on earth people will test the device with original bios when is pretty damn risky to downgrade bios. What have you been smoking 🤦. Lenovo should have released the device at this price tags better optimized. People who buy will just have to endure months of shit performance for the price tag unless Lenovo drops the price.
You are way too underrated dude. I’m tryna decide between them both because it looks like the ally has better performance, VRR, and speakers. For what i’ve seen from the Legion Go is that it has better battery life, a case, detachable controllers with one having a sort of mouse and also a trackpad, and a better screen with a kickstand. Since you have both, which would you consider better?
Thanks man! If you want a big screen and detachable controllers the Legion Go could be the way to go. But the Allys speakers, VRR, Joysticks, portability is a bit better. I prefer the Ally and I bought the Go hoping it’d replace the Ally, but it doesn’t.
Hi! I was wondering how is the legion go going for you? This is going to be the first true gaming computeri get deciding between the ally and legion but i mainly care about power and which one will run games better @@filt3rless
I had both and ended up returning the Go. It's awesome but the variable refresh rate on the Ally really does smooth out gameplay. And I thought for sure that I wouldn't be able to notice a difference. I also preferred the portability of the Ally vs the heft of the Go but that's just me.
@@hdpredator11143103 it has significantly faster ram so it stands to reason the performance will improve pretty significantly. But the portability and smoothness I get from a variable refresh rate screen was what made me stick with the Ally
That was a huge effort put into that video, thank you. Most definitely the Go for me, apart from the bigger screen, to compete with the Ally after about two weeks after launch is great. Plus, the SD card breaking issue and my bad experience with an Asus laptop I bought 2 months ago helps to make up my mind.
This is fantastic work, sir. Thank you very much for putting in this time. It is very helpful. I have owned an Ally since August, I don't have more $ to burn and spend on the Go, but damn, it's very cool. I am still very please with the performance of the Ally.
This video is better than every review when it comes to performance.... Showing side by side footage with the stats exactly what customers need not someone opinion when he could easily display the facts to you..... These kind of videos I decide which CPU or GPU to pick
Could you do a battery test with at 10w, 12w, 15w, 20w, and 25w? I'd love to see a comparison between the Legion Go and ROG Ally when it comes to battery run times
I normally play at turbo highest watts because i bought a case the hold power bank and charger so I’m always able to play at the most power and get decent time
How is the stutter while playing first person shooters or any AAA games ? The display looks great just wanted to know if not having the VRR is a huge issue or not
Are you running your ally completely stock? Other videos I have seen have shown the go pulling ahead in some games when both are running stock with no additional optimizations which could be explained by the legions faster ram. Either way, really great video. I really want to like the Ally but the whole non response by Asus regarding the sd card issue rubbed me the wrong way. Either way though it seems like both devices are good and I am excited to see what the future of this space holds.
the comparison was fine but i really dont understand people who cant wait for Go updates 😭 i mean ally isnt doing better at first , they get feedback , complaint and report thats how they can launch an update to improve it . its going to be the same, its newly launched . just give them time. i still cant decide to purchace go or ally but imo better to wait a couple month to see is there any updates and how the performance is after update.
Everyone that has the GO don't worry they just need more time to better optimize the handheld like the Ally did. Remember their were people trashing the the Ally and returning them when they just should have waited for the updates.
Excellent detailed benchmarks. One question, on the go were these performed in 800p or 720p, just double checking. If it was 800p then those neck and neck tests technically the go would be slightly ahead. And it hasn’t been optimized yet so I’m really pulling for the Go
They are both at 720p. Realistically when in hand the Go would be running 800p so that would drop the FPS slightly. I'd say they'll be pretty close after Lenovo optimizes it when comparing 800p vs 720p.
If you had any kind of working brain cells in that cranium of yours, you'd know that identical specs do not always mean identical performance, and there are MANY factors and variables that contribute to performance more than just the chips being used. How about, the cooling being used? Affecting performance via thermal throttling which could make all the difference in HANDHELD devices like these? Differences in software and bios configurations that could lead to instability and crashing that wouldn't be reflected on benchmarks because you couldn't start the benchmarks to begin with? There's also power consumption and power limits that are placed by the individual manufacturer that can differ between each of them and lead to different power ceilings, because one manufacturer could put a cap on how much power you can squeeze out of a chip in their system when overclocking or changing power limits, like how laptop manufacturers could have the same exact CPU in their systems but one tops out at a lower TDP than the other. Should I continue or do you understand now?
Thanks for the review. Why is the Ally running hotter than Go by like 3-6 degrees. What's the power draw? You should be able to get that with afterburner. Also; you forced the latest driver for the Go? Whereas the Ally got it thru Asus? Interesting comparison. I would have rolled back Ally driver to match the driver Lenovo pushed.
It's pretty awesome to see how great the thermals seem to be for both devices. One of my main concerns was how hot these could get (bad memories of old gaming laptops).
@@filt3rless Depends on your card. My g15 rtx3050ti has only 4gb. with Ryzen 7 6800H. Never goes above 70-80 clecious degrees with ram 32gb. It s a laptop bro and playing GTA or day z or dcs or anno1800 everything pretty maxed
Been debating getting one but I would like to see performance be a little better and more consistent. A few more years of improvements these handhelds will be awesome performance wise
Suggestion, how about a summary slide, show averages across all games tested and different resolutions. From the quick review of the video, they look very close in performance.
Arg….so I pulled the trigger on the Go last night. Best Buy has them available again. I’m kind of covered with the extended holiday release window - gives Lenovo time to fine tune it and worse case scenario if they don’t I’ll just return. I’d really like to sell my SD and Ally and just have one handheld.
For me it's the size of the screen, don't care about portability so thinking going for the Legion Go. Will be using it at home plugged in all the time in bed. 😂
@@spike178 The Legion Go is definitely the way to go if screen size is important. The detachable controllers and kickstand will also make it easier to play in bed while just setting it up on the table or anywhere on the bed.
Hey, how are you measuring 720p and 1080p for the Legion Go? Or are you measuring 800p and 1200p which is effectively pushing 80 and 120 pixels more per frame?
Hey this is hooked up to an external monitor and you bring up a great point. People are going to be using 800p on the Go and 720p on the Ally. So in that respect the Ally would come out a little bit more ahead than you’re seeing here. I’m planning to do benchmarks on the Go at 800p, 1200p and 1600p so stay tuned :)
@@Dx-so7jmmost of the other comparisons are showing benchmarks where the vram, resolution and drivers aren't the same this is the best comparison shown by far keep up the good work!
I’d love to see a video like this with more optimized game settings. Like idc about playing the game at high settings, so like medium to low settings FPS would be a nice thing to see
as close as they are, the real difference is that the ally has a variable refresh rate display, so when using it as a hand held, i think it offers the best smoothness of gameplay , and lets you adjust the settings higher in games, with no noticeable loss of how smooth the game looks, due to the variable refresh screen the ally has. the legion go on the other hand, should produce noticeable stutters as the fram rates drop below the hz of the legions screen. even if the legion was better by some count of frames than the ally, the ally would still produce a better experience i think. anyone producing a handheld, should include a variable refresh screen in my opinion, since the actual gpus ( tho very nice) are still weak in comparison to any modern desktop gfx solution, running triple a titles on these even at low res, in most games , the frame rates can be all over the place, and with a fixed hz on a display, your sure to notice any game, if its not producing frames equal to the hz of the display. just my thought, ally would win even without any actual performance difference.
I noticed how jagged the display looked for sure compared to the Ally display with VRR. I also use FreeSync and G-Sync displays for this same reason. For some people it wouldn't bother them, but it definitely bugs me. Even if there was a 20% difference in performance, I'd take the VRR display as the extra frames don't make up for the lack of fluidity.
i think ally have better fan and that why ally would do more FPS maybe 1-10% more, but for me I would choose the Go cuz of the screen. what do you think ?
Plus of go is you can use moonlight if you have pc to stream 1440p to it if you like also you can remove controllers and it will be like a tablet - you could probably browse/read books on it
Ally for the win for sure. Honestly I’m holding out for an upgrade not a side grade. Too many people bought a legion go who already have an Ally. Kinda weird move unless you’re reviewing it like you are. But I’m holding out for a handheld that has 32gb of ram, bigger screen than the Ally and same or better performance at least.😊
@@filt3rlessyes I agree, I have a Steam Deck, but I wanted more power and after a careful research between Legion Go and Ally i went for the Ally which I think to be overall a bit better if compared to Legion Go.
Not a weird move if you want fully functional device lol. Both me and my friends micro sd card readers failed on our allys. His start3d to go first then mine failed not long after.I sold mine and my friend also plans to sell his.
@@coolmodee Using the micro is a waste of time . I used them foe emulation for years . For a few bucks more you can simply upgrade the ssd or if your a diehard micro sd user just us it in a usb micro sd adapter on a charger dock or type c / USB micro sd adapter there like 10 or 15$ at Walmart. I get it if you buy something it should work but atleast there's multiple ways around it .
What was the operating system power mode set to in legion go? I own both devices and I get better performance on the legion go with the efficiency setting.
They were both set to Best Performance. I'll look into efficiency. My guess is it's something with CPU Boost (which is also enabled on both). CPU Boost is something that can net you decent stability and small gains in some games as well as much improved battery life. Efficiency helps put that under control.
Hey, there is a lot of bugs with Custom where it doesn't work properly on the Legion. I'm using an app called Handheld Companion on both (just for testing to have it be even).
@@sharlatandjaul3739 I think setting the device to 30 watts then using HC could work. There shouldn't be a conflict as long as the power profile stays the same.
Great video Filterless. One of the most comprehensive performance comparison so far. I just wish someone will do a comparison at native device resolutio with latest bios/Asus drivers vs go at 720p vs 800p and 1080p vs 1200p (equivalent 16:10 resolution). Cheers
I am planning on doing an 800p, 1200p and 1600p test in the future :). A more fair comparison would be the Legion Go at 800p and the Ally at 720p. Mainly because everyone who uses the Legion is going to do 16:10 like you said, so 800p+. And anyone who uses the ally will use 16:9 or at least 720p+. The main issue right now is no custom resolutions on the Legion. Since 900p is a nice mix, it'd be nice to have something between 800p and 1200p on the Legion.
@@filt3rless Yeah exactly. Most of these comparisons are useless for end user as they’re either going to use 720p/900p/1080p on the ally and 800p/1200p/1600p (mainly for indies) on legion go. So, I reckon 720p vs 800p and 1080p vs 1200p is more representative for the end user as legion go decided to go with 16:10 aspect ratio. I look forward to your future coverage. Keep up the great work. Happy gaming :)
They're both running into the same external monitor for recording. Realistically everyone with the Go will use 800p which will give slightly less FPS than the 720p resolution shown here. I'm planning on doing an 800p, 1200p and 1600p comparison for the Go soon, so stay tuned :)
I agree with you and think the Go will keep improving over time just like the Ally. Everyone is going to want a certain device for their own reasons. I’m most excited about the 8th gen systems as I’m hoping AMD optimizes for battery.
Hey, I saw you commented on the HYPR-RX video. I ended up setting the video to private as I need to do further testing into Radeon Boost. For your question about RSR, you'll want to make sure you're running 900p on the desktop as well as in-game. If it's not set to 900p in game, you'll have to change it to 900p then restart the game. Let me know if that works :)
Hey, this was not on that bios as this took days to make. I saw a beta bios, but haven't seen an official one from Lenovo yet. I'll probably wait for the official one to release and install it. Then I can get a few tests in to see the improvements :)
Lenovo should have waited to release this device with next gen chip .No point in getting the go if you own rog ally .Both devices are neck to neck .I wont buy another handheld till the next gen comes out .Good video though .It takes alot of time to do this kind of vid.
Same, I have a Ally that's upgraded to 2TB and I have a working SD that hasn't had a problem since I got it back in July. No reason to run around buying new handhelds for no reason. I pretty much exclusively play with Xreal glasses so screen size just doesn't matter either.
Yeah anybody with a Ally be crazy to get the Go must have money to burn 🔥 if keeping both. Not bought any handheld yet so in a good position to wait and see, want something better then the Ally or Go both good though but in no rush.
I really like the bigger screen on the Go but i like the vrr too. I wanna play at highest possible resolution without lag. For me, i won't be playing without plugging in. I'd mostly be playing for hours on one sit with plugged in. Which handheld would suit better for me?
That's a tough one! If you have any way of getting your hands on both before buying (some places have them on display) then I'd do that. If you're not interested in the detachable controllers or kickstand then the Ally has much better speakers and VRR makes it look smoother. Keep in mind there is SD Card issues on the Ally so if you're planning to use an SD Card the Legion Go could be the way to go. Also I might have a faulty unit on my Legion Go. I have a video on the channel about it and both USB-C ports kick my SSD's when directly plugged in so I can't use them. I have to run it through a powered HUB to be able to use the external hard drives.
Why is the Legion Go speakers so bad first thing I noticed on RU-vid reviews. Could setup some Bluetooth/ USB external speakers I suppose. Not checked what outputs the Legion Go has yet.
I am planning for kinda same. But My plan is to plugin my handhold device most of the time with my 70" Ginat TV and just lie or sit on the couch and play a game(with Bluetooth controller or Legion's detached controllers; doesn't matter) or watch a movie (I know sounds so lazy XD). and my handhold device will be always plugged in with charger too. yeah it will be more stationary than mobile. So for that plan which will be better?
Thanks for your awesome work!! This is the only source like this practical benchmark comparison. Here it looks like Legion Go left a bit back than Rog Ally ? But why? aren't the using the same Processors and GPU? moreover, Legion Go has a bit faster RAM. so Legion Go is supposed to be a bit faster. Can anyone explain why this so? Thanks
Asus has had a lot of time to optimize the device. And the 323 bios they released a few months ago really improved performance in the lower watt range. The Legion Go should be slightly faster because of the faster RAM. However, everyone will be using 800p on the Go and 720p on the Ally. Or 1200p on the Go vs 1080p on the Ally. So the slightly increased resolution the Legion is pushing with it's 16:10 display should balance things out once Lenovo optimizes it, where they will be pretty close.
Supposedly the Go preforms better when thermals are set to performance and OS Power Mode is set to efficiency. Any way to get benchmarks in both os power modes to see how better efficiency mode is and also wonder if that would change with updates
Good benchmarks. Ordering my legion go tomorrow. See how it compares to my ayaneo 2. Im probably gonna use an external gpu. Only costs about £200 cos i have a 3080 in my pc. Housing sizes are a disappointment though. Not much smaller than my itx pc. Might diy it. Pull out its internals and re house it in a smaller case.
