how to make the vhd inside internal ssd and use ventoy to boot to it , my goal is to have multiple vhd conaining diffrent operate system inside internal storage and i can acsess them ventoy

Oh that is why I had issues with ProxMox on a flash drive. With mine Bro it was very slow and laggy if I had one of your drives I could do it!!

Yes sir, I bet you would get much better performance on a 3.2 gen 2 USB. Read and write is near a gig.

Happy Easter! Maybe this vhdimg program holds the key to why .wim files also don't just boot up in Ventoy. Is there a plugin for .wim files too? The documentation is pretty poor, and doesn't address it directly. There's a wimboot mode, but what that's for, or what it does, who knows. I just thought that it would be handy to have a WinRE environment that could be booted from a USB drive.

Happy Easter! I’ll have to look into the WIM file issues. I know you can use WIM mode on some ISOs. Are you talking straight up WIM files natively booting on Ventoy?

@@theit-unicorn1873 this was the first time I tried using Ventoy for booting anything other than an ISO. I had backed up the files from a WinRE partition, so I just tried copying the winre.wim file, because it says "You can also browse ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files in local disks and boot them." I've been using the RecoveryDisk command in Windows to create a bootable USB drive for system recovery. I think I'll create a VHD of the USB, and try to get it to boot. I could do the same to the recovery partition.

@@theit-unicorn1873 I figured it out. Turns out that there are plugins for both .wim and .vhd(x) files that need to be installed in the ventoy directory. Sadly the "plugin" page on the Ventoy website doesn't mention this, or link to the page that lists the plugins, nor does a search for "ventoy plugins". But when I searched for "ventoy vhd plugin" I got the page. On that page there are links on the left, including one for the wimboot plugin. Just unzip and copy them over to the ventoy directory, and now I see the .vhd and .wim files. The winre.wim file did boot without any other files from the recovery partition, but booting from Ventoy, it doesn't see the computer's NVMe drive with the Windows installation, so not that useful. I don't see a plugin for .img files, but that would be useful for some things. I'd like to see if I could boot the KolibriOS floppy image, and maybe some old DOS utilities on MBR machines.

I just have a question,if i use vhd on bare metal will usb devices depend on the main os on the real hard drive?i want to avoid usb errors on windows 10 so i wanted to try windows 8 on dualboot using vhd

None of your USBs are recognized? If you want to dual boot, you can do that with 8/10 in a few ways. I would suggest getting away from Windows 8 at this point, unless there's a reason you need to stay on it.

The main OS is not used when booting live images be they VHD or .iso or anything else. If you want the main OS to connect to your peripherals then install W8 to a VM on your host OS or build a VM on external media then attach that VM to the host. Ventoy exists to boot from external media with or without an hdd. It's not intended to substitute for everything a fully installed host OS does because VM software doesn't recognize all peripherals. If you want a full external Windows install with fewer limitations loading a Windows To Go USB is the way. If you want to run any number of VHD from the external Windows To Go drive you can run any VM software on that host. Ventoy being able to boot only VMs IF NEEDED is a convenience, not an ideal way to boot and run external OS. The ideal way is to have a full host OS install AND all the VM which interest you so you can boot BOTH ways.

Thanks for subscribing! You can ask any questions here. For Windows with "persistence", we take a full install method via vhd. This allows you to have a fully installed version of Windows on your USB and you can install/save/etc and take it with you anywhere. Let me know if that answers your question.

@@theit-unicorn1873 thanks for replying… i have a 64gb flash drive i installed ventoy on that and i want to run a Kali Linux(Learning Networking) and Windows 10or11(to run some unsupported software) with persistent, i had an idea before,running a VM but as u know that specs wasn’t sufficient enough to run a VMware , btw i have an 2010 Lenovo g450 has a intel core 2 duo with 3gb ram and has a 250gb ssd( ik this is not a efficient lap,but this is all i have) .So,VM is out of the question for me ig. What can we do in this Instance?
