Another way to mark trays as to what's in em, is to write on the tape numbers or letters, then in a note book write down what's in flat ---- ( have to pick a number or letter or name for the flat and also put that on it somewhere ) and in rows____ , and can then also do " Row A :1- 4 is black cherry tom. ; 5-10 is Amish paste " for example , within the row . Of course then u need to be careful not to lose the notebook or get it wet or full of soil smears... :) . But this has been my go-to method and been working great for the few flats I've started most springs, as a home gardener ( I tended to direct sow everything possible, to avoid damping-off & hardening-off issues I've struggled with too often ) but that will change some as I plan to start more, sooner, for various reasons after we move onto our new place soon. Also, for anyone else not wishing to patronize Amazon as much as possible, I got my soil blocker from a seller on E-bay. Said it was a licensed seller of them for the maker & was well reviewed. I have it now, no problems, and have used it successfully once so far - so exciting !!! Also, thanks Steven & hope you guys are doing very well since your move !

Great video! I just had to do the maths on the germination rate and I'll leave it here if anyone cares. Your probability of successful germination of at least one seed for a plant with 88% germination rate and using 2 seeds is 100*(1-(1-0.88))^2. ^ represents the power operator, so in this case is power 2 or the number in parenthesis squared. The end result is 98.56%, definitely good odds! using 3 seeds would result in 99.8%, so I agree that 3 is likely an overkill. Keep it up!

I've never had luck with plug trays, soil blocks have been perfect every time. I think for me its the depth. Soil blockers have the dibble that makes the same depth every time. Just started sucession seeds today and am trying plugs again. Will see how it goes.

@@jakubmika6433 We cannot finish it, because we are missing a lot of aluminum profiles to put in the poly carbonate plates. Now emailing the seller to get the missing parts. And it is quite frustrating. Because they want us to indicate which parts we are missing based on the construction drawing. But that picture is very unclear.

Could someone more professional &/or experienced than I , add some tips for ways to avoid the just-planted trays from drying out during the day while your away at work or something ? The things I know are for them to be out of direct sunlight ( esp. for those which don't need light to germinate) , cover with a humidity dome/up-turned plastic bin , or a layer of that garden frost-protection fabric laying over it all. That or boards for carrots in the garden.

Dude.. save yourself the expense & hassle & just use finished compost sifted through your 1/4" screen--it is all your seeds need for starting. Put your $ into your planting bed as that is where your plants will spend most of their time. p.s.: depending on your compost, you may need to add a bit of nitrogen to your pile (this is common in hot climates in southern US locations). You can do that with fertilizer, manure, or even urine. Given that you have pigs, I'd just compost their manure in your compost pile. Chicken manure works great too!

That plug tray has a poor design with no bottom. I would think everything would easily wash out or fall through. I thought about soil blocking, but realized they would be to fiddly considering I have tons of tray inserts that I reuse for years at a time. Some might think this is heresy, but I think perlite offers no benefit other than being a filler. I found some really sturdy trays at Lowes before they sold out. They were made for plantation products by Landmark plastics, but they like to hide that fact. It always makes sense to use a web tray under all 10x20 trays to protect them and give more support.
@J_bar_S_Photography

Ok, why is a bag of perlite that only covers 4 cubic feet cost 50 bucks? some places cost 44 bucks but still. Why is it so expensive? All it is is styrofoam balls?
