ULTIMATE SEGA GAME GEAR | McWill LCD + RetroSix Custom Shell | Full Tutorial | Retro Renew
In today's episode of Retro Renew, I go all out and completely modify a Sega Game Gear! I’ll be outfitting it with a McWill LCD kit as well as a custom Green RetroSix shell and buttons! I must say, this is the most difficult LCD mod I have done to date and certainly requires some soldering skills. While this was a difficult mod, it was most certainly worth it! I am upgrading this Game Gear for my friend Matthew McCheskey who composed the intro music to my Retro Renew series! I hope he is happy with the results! Anyway, please sit back, relax and enjoy the video!
Note: McWill Kit is only compatible with following Game Gear models: 837-9130 / 837-9024 / 837-8560 / 837-7996 & 837-7719-01
So here's what you will find in this video:
► 0:00 Intro
► 1:00 McWill Game Gear LCD Mod Overview
► 3:13 Parts Overview
► 5:28 McWill LCD Mod Tutorial
► 16:22 Mod Results!

The 2X integer scale mode is probably used in conjunction with the optional VGA output as all modes carry over to that as well.

This looks great! one piece of advice for those wires, pre-tin them with solder before soldering them to the pads and pins. Makes for a stronger, longer lasting joint. :) (Apologies if you did pre-tin, I can't quite tell if they are or not.)

I think that was nice of you to mention that.
@MachoNachoProductions
@MachoNachoProductions 3 года назад
Thank you V V! So glad you liked the video! The nice thing about the DMG is that the motherboard with the CPU is separate for the the lcd board. Unfortunately the GG has everything in the same board so they would essentially need to remake the motherboard. We can always be hopeful though. I’m sure there is someone out there who can figure out how to make this mod more plug and play, but it may be an impossible task given the design of the GG. Cheers V V! Thank you for the comment!!

I've recently entered the deep rabbit hole of game gear modding and boy do I like it. It's impressive the amount of things you can do to a 30 year old console. I got my first game gear around a week ago. I'm a repair technician and one of my clients gave me her GG for a simple capacitor swap. Little did we know that I was not the first person inside that poor thing, and the previous attempts at repairing it were terrible. Lifted and missing pads, torn traces under the capacitors (I'm assuming the last "technician" pried the caps with a screwdriver or something causing and immense amount of damage), capacitors of incorrect values in incorrect places with incorrect voltage ratings... A MASSACRE. I told my client about the situation before doing anything and proceed to explain to her that it was going to be an extensive and expensive repair due to what I found and even though, I couldn't guarantee that the ASICs were not fried due to overvoltage or something else was faulty. So she told me that she would most likely throw it in the bin because she didn't feel like paying a rather large amount of money without any warranties. I told her if she could give it to me and I ended up paying her a tiny amount of money for compensation and kept the console. Long story short, I repaired the traces, changed the capacitors, cleaned the board and fixed the audio board. Now I'm waiting for some replacements from AliExpress to fix the power board which had several SMD components fried and unstable voltages operation. If everything goes well and I end up fixing it, next thing will be a new retrosix shell (haven't decided yet if black or transparent) and a McWill LCD mod. I'm really looking forward to have my sweet baby working again like a champ. Videos like yours are EXTREMELY important and valuable to the community of modding fans. Great editing, great content and perfectly explained. I'm already subscribed and waiting for more GG content or any other retro consoles for that matter. Keep up the good work bro. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🆙🆙🆙

I would love to see a comparison or vs video between this and the analogue pocket with the game gear or adapter or just the open core for game gear. I play game gear games through my gba everdrive which can also play gamegear games and honestly it looks so great both on the analogue pocket screen and my tv with the dock, that I don't know if this would be worth it for me to get.

@@MachoNachoProductionsNice work and a very nice instructional vid!! (much better than the provided install instructions). However the way you connected this mod essentially uses the brightness wheel to control the voltage supply to the whole kit. I think the install instructions for your mod board revision (without brightness control) uses instructions rev 2.2, which specify that the Vcc and GND of the mod board are connected to the Vcc and GND of the GG. The brightness wheel pin 1 and 3 are also connected to Vcc and GND of the GG and pin 2 of the brightness wheel to the 'brightness pad' on the mod board. This way the mod kit always receives a clean 5V Vcc and the brightness wheel can be used to toggle VGA mode...

I have a GG with a broken screen just sitting waiting to be modded, but I just can't deal with non-integer scaling. In these old pixel games, it looks terrible imo. great video as always! My only criticism is that you should probably tin your wires before you soldering them to the PCB.

Perfect integer scaling would be fantastic! Totally agree! There were a few wires I pre tinned off camera and some that I didn’t. The ones going to the very small lcd connections were all pre tinned. A couple of errors in the video. There are 5 major mainboard revisions and the McWill is only compatible with 2. VA0 and VA1. The cartridge port shielding is not pre-cut. This is how all Asian/Japanese models have their cartridge port cover, because of less strict FCC regulations.
