preston turbos is your area of expertise not mine but from architecture schooling and hvac knowledge which i have some of i am aware that pipe length is only part of the equation to flow and volume the other is bends each bend adds an effective pipe length , its possible to have 3 physical feet of tube equal to 6 feet if you throw enough bends into it. thanks for the videos

@@GARAGEIdiotS Preston, from basic airflow, physics, aerodynamnics [dynamic airflow principles] You might consider the following for the rear, truck bed inter-cooler hidden in the toolbox: A. fresh air: [this will be much easier to show by a diagram, drawing - will attempt to describe - if desired can provide a drawing, sketch, diagram] 1. place a rear air dam from under the truck with wide opening, truck width which allows air flow into the tool box area 2. place a flat piece, full width from top of air slot extending over the air inter-cooler inside the tool box, place a shape of curved piece from the bottom of air slot in the shape of the bottom of a rear wing, inverted to an aircraft wing, such the curve side is on the underside, thus similar to a inversion of a wheel well 3. the ram air flow will achieve the desired cooling affect along with fresh air available for the turbo 4. the air flow dynamics, aerodynamics will also achieve increased down force for the rear cab area, thus improved rear traction B. This air flow passage, dam could be extended with a flat area under the truck to continue a down force for the entire bed [also the front cab, engine area too] for increased down force All The Best and Much Success in all of Your Quests, Health, Happiness, Healing, Well Being [without more burns too], Sincerely

I'm thinking about doing a rear mount turbo setup on a car build of mine. From the research I've done is it will introduce turbo lag purely due to the exhaust losing heat/energy as it travels back to the turbo. Less heat/energy means that it'll take more rpms to spin the turbo the same amount. So basically it just shifts the powerband of the turbo up by about 500rpms compared to it being right off the headers! You can help contain the heat and reduce the lag by wrapping the exhaust. I've also been told that having an intercooler in a setup like this is less important since the intake side runs along the bottom of the vehicle and will be cooled by the passing air. I'm enjoying the build so far! Keep at it!
@Satori-Automotive
@Satori-Automotive 5 месяцев назад
hey mate, could u put a heating coil around the part that needs to stay warm? also the thickness of the material could help to preserve heat + of course a nice heat wrap its more complicated, but also more cool and more unique to have a rear mounted turbo. i really like the idea!

Best way to ditch lag on remote setups is to reduce pipe diameter. Shouldn't run anything more than 2.25" hotside back to that bad boy. 2.5" max cold side diameter. Looks great!

People vastly overestimate the amount of lag a remote mount turbo will have. The time to spool up with a properly sized turbo will be only a few milliseconds longer than a normal setup. Actually a lot of people confuse turbo lag with boost threshold. If you have a bigger turbo it will be 'laggy' in the sense that it won't spool up until higher in the rev range, which is the boost threshold. You'd be hard pressed to find actual turbo lag in a modern turbo outside of something like a 100psi diesel setup.

people must never have seen under chassis turbo setups before. some of the stealthy kits mount the turbos at the rear of the vehicle and don't use an intercooler at all. if you heat wrap the hot side piping and turbo blanket it will keep those box temps low already minus the plans you already have for fans and ducting, but it helps with the velocity of the heat from the engine stay high for better spool. then reflective foil tape/wrap the cold side to reflect heat untill it hits a cool space
@YOUneedJESUS1
@YOUneedJESUS1 6 месяцев назад
The lag doesn't come from the cold side. It's the distance on the exhaust side from the head. Hold a piece of paper next to your mouth and blow as hard as you can. It moves fast and instantly. Now have a friend hold a piece of paper 10ft away from you and blow at it as hard as you can. It moves half as much and it takes a sec to start moving. So a turbo on a turbo manifold let's say builds 16psi at 3,000rpm and 20psi at 6,000rpm. Now move the turbo 6ft away from the head and it makes 5psi at 3,000rpm and 10psi at 6,000rpm.

Add a clamp to the ‘ air filter ‘ to make it more realistic for the ‘cold air intake ‘, that way it’ll look like the clamp is securing air filter. What if you find a ground effects kit / side skirts to make the intake less noticeable?

The amount of lag that comes from boost piping is basically unnoticeable. A smart person explained it better but the pipes are already full of air (or exhaust) so any lag that would come from a length of piping, you (as the driver) would never notice! Now if you go to extremes and run 100 feet of 5 inch diameter piping you may notice a bit but realistically, you'll never know!

All about being different this is quality 😂 I say cerakote the toolbox and partition the toolbox so the intercooler is in a separate area in the box , run some fans on intercooler drawing air or a duct scoop under the bed for intercooler with some vent holes in box for air to escape , could do same in other side of box where turbo is to disperse heat , look forward to some more wacky engineering 😂
@Tumbleweed_Tx

I would vent the intercooler out the side of the box. That way, the hole is invisible. Make a baffle directing the air, and you'll be good to go.

What if you did an exhaust stack coming out of the tool box…. but two of them. One for the exhaust outlet, and the other for the vent to allow heat out? If you did an angled cut on the top of the stack, and had the stack tall enough slightly above the cab into the wind then as the air flows around the stack, it would form a vacuum in the air outlet stack to help pull heat out of the tool box while you are driving. While sitting still, the fans blowing fresh air in should be enough to keep heat under control.

This is a cool set up and can’t wait to see the heat shield and ducting work. Is it the “best” system for overall performance probably not. But from experience of using a rear mounted turbo setup on a 4th gen TA, it makes all the same noises and power as other turbo cars.

Nitrous cures all lag😁, WOT trigger and a hobbs switch to disengage at half boost is a simple cure. Be surprised how quick a turbo will spool, i had a 98mm Detroit turbo on a stock 88 5.0 and from idle to WOT it took it just over 2 seconds to be at 25bs of boost. If it stalled it up on the footbrake it was nearly instant boost when i went WOT with a 98mm inducer, .88 ar compressor and a T6 1.32 ar turbine
