A lot of my friends have been pushing me to review this particular countertop water flosser. As a dentist, I have been accustom to recommending traditional dental floss to clean in between the teeth morning & night & I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews regarding whether the waterpik can be used as an alternative to the string floss. So I decided this would be a good time to take a closer look into the product
This crazy contraption works by using pressurized water to effectively clean in between the teeth & the gums. The idea is that the water pressure will wash away the plaque & food debris that tend to get stuck in between our teeth
It took me quite some time to figure out how the pieces come together but I eventually made it work. This (holds reservoir) represents the waterpik reservoir which is typically filled to the brim with luke warm water. I would definitely avoid using cold water if your teeth have a tendency to be hypersensitive just like mine. After you have filled the reservoir, you have the option of picking from a variety of tips. This particular waterpik comes with 5 tip iterations which focus on hygiene for people with braces, implants & deep pockets. Waterpik did an absolutely awesome job with the design. A simple flick of the wrist allows you to interchange the tips with ease. On the side, we can see a round nob which toggles between different intensities of pressurized water. Each rotation of the dial increases the water pressure by 10 PSI. If you dare, bump it up to the highest setting but I would warn you, it is super powerful! The button below allows you to switch to a massaging mode where it shoots water out in intervals instead of a smooth continuous flow.
So now, I want to be able to show you guys at home how to operate this device. I have the machine filled to the brim & its on my preferred setting of 60 PSI. I prefer to orient the device in my mouth before turning the the tip on. I like to start from the lower right side of my mouth & angle it at the gumline one tooth at a time. If I want to spit, I turn the machine off and once I’m done i go back to where i left off until I’ve cleaned every area of the mouth. I’ve been using this product for about a week now & I have to admit that Im really enjoying it. I feel as though the pressurized water gets into those hard to reach spots & in general my mouth feels healthier & cleaner. I definitely see value for people who despise the traditional method of flossing or are unable to floss due to difficult motor control movements. The evidence based research has made it clear that the waterpik shouldn’t replace proper string flossing but it is an awesome alternative for those that feel like they need a better hygiene routine.
I hope this video clears up any questions you may have had about the waterpik. Please leave a like if you enjoyed the video & don’t forget to share and subscribe. See you for the next one

I do both, I use the waterpik, then I floss to make sure that I got everything. The waterpik gets out over 96% of debris, then the string floss gets out the rest if any. I would say the addition of a water flosser to any dental hygiene routine is a must.

Love the Waterpik, I use to hate flossing and my dental appointments always made my gums bleed. This Waterpik is wonderful to use and my mouth is cleaner after using it. I bought it because I have a pocket behind my one tooth and food gets into the pocket and causes pain and inflammation. One session with the Waterpik on level 1, pain was gone instantly. I was amazed and I am very grateful. The last time the pocket had food in it (popcorn) I spent weeks in pain, several tubes of tooth numbing ointment, a trip to the dentist and paid $200 for the dentist to tell me nothing was in the pocket after they checked it.

I do both, I use string floss, and the water pik. In the morning I brush for four minutes (it has a two minute timer) with my OralB electric tooth brush, then I string floss, then I use the water pik. I normally brush for about two minutes in the late afternoon/eve, and finally I brush again before bed with either my electric toothbrush or a quick once over with a regular tooth brush, and I try to use the water pik again before bed as well. This routine seems to do very well for me, and the water pik is like a bonus, and man it makes my mouth feel so clean, I just can't say how much I love having this device. But it's not a replacement for string floss, which toughens the gums and makes them hearty and healthy. I had a hand held water pik that was great but both of the ones I had crapped out after about 4 months and just quit working, so my sister bought me this table top pik and I've probably thanked her like six times, it's one of the best gifts I've ever gotten cause it's just so amazing. It's makes your mouth feel so clean and good that you actually look forward to using it, can't say I've ever said that about dental care before. I say if you're considering one, do it, but never stop flossing with string floss, use them in tandem. Of course my advice is sound because I have an advanced degree from What's A Matta U.

Can you please do a waterpic/waterflosser demo using disclosing tablet/liquid before and after? I can't find anything like that on any RU-vid channel. I am a skeptic and want to see proof that a stream of water actually loosens and removes plaque. An analogy would be washing the car with a strong stream of water only. The large pieces of dirt are washed away, but the small stuff is stuck somewhat to the car and requires scrubbing with a brush. Thanks

I had been on ortho treatment for over a year but then as they put braces on my front teeth my gums started bleeding and I started feeling weakness in that front area of my gums so I discontinued the treatment for a few months. So if I use water flossser would it make my gums and teeth healthier again. Or if you can suggest any other treatment I would be really greatful. Thankyou.

I can't get easily between my teeth with string floss because theres so very little gap between my teeth. I have to go back and forth like a saw to actually get the floss even to wedge between the teeth in the first place. Then it's a struggle to get the floss out from between the teeth. This is especially true of the molars which are difficult enough to even reach because my mouth is so small. And that's another problem because I'm always afraid the floss might cut the edges of my mouth. It takes a whole lot of floss because it all quickly ends up in shreds. The whole process is a big arkward and timely production. Ughh.

This is why I bought one, if you don't floss because it's difficult or awkward this is way better than nothing. I must say my mouth feels so much cleaner and I actually look forward to using it morning and night... Which is weird. I hate flossing normally. If you can't floss regularly or don't then I recommend this, if you're getting in fine manually and do it every day then continue!

A bonded direct lower lingual retainer can be flossed using floss threaders where you insert the threaders between your teeth and under the wire! However, a waterpik is an awesome supplemental device to clean under the wires as well

My hygienist was nagging me for years to get one but it’s been sitting on the kitchen counter since October. It’s complicated and overwhelming. So today I spent an hour trying to get started on their 14 day challenge. I can’t get back step 1: full reservoir. I can’t figure out how to take it apart. Customer contact requires too much personal data plus model and serial numbers I can’t find! I have to take it to my next appointment and let the hygienist give me a tutorial. 😫

What about the other side of the gums? I only see people pik the front side. And if the water hurts my gums on high, is that bad? I've heard people say they bled so much after using a pik that it appears they went 9 round with a heavyweight fighter. Mine barely bled. Am I doing it wrong?
@SmileInfluencers
@SmileInfluencers 5 лет назад
Mike Andrews I wouldn’t use the highest setting; rather put it on a setting somewhere in the middle that is comfortable when running it across the gum to tooth interface... the directions of the waterpik instruct you to use it from the front side only. Remember, this tool is only meant to supplement flossing & brushing, so the traditional brushing should help reduce inflammation on the lingual surface of the gums! I hope that kinda helps!
