That was a fun watch while working away on some mundane stuff. I too get greatly nostalgic about this era of PC hardware & gaming, and indeed even when we did that trip and built this thing originally. I have neglected my old systems for the past couple of years too, life has just gotten too busy. I would love to make more time for it.

I try and make some time when I can, since getting my new job it has motivated me more to do it. my old job was way too emotionally draining, but this one isn't so I've been in the mood to do RU-vid and old computer shit a lot more despite having more stuff on my plate. I also realized it has been over 5 years since we did that trip. Maybe once this pandemic is over I'll make some time to make my way over there again.

Hello, Mr. Stavris; I have 2 CM Elite 330s, 1 is still in the box. That case is why I watched your video. IMO it is a very good case, extremely easy to cool & fairly study. The mesh front is excellent & you mod the drive cages or remove 'em. The only real issue is not much room for cable management. I may paint one of the front bezels, I think semi-gloss black would work. My own-built is in my first Elite case. The CPU is an AMD FX-6350, 16GB RAM, 2 SSDs, 1 for MX linux, 1 for win10, & 2 HDDs for storage. My ASUS AMD Radeon R7 250 died so I swapped in a R5 230 OEM. I used flat clear plastic packaging to block the side vents. Better air control gives better cooling. I have a CM Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler. I replaced the cooler fan (it died) & added 1 in front, so 3 120mm fans. One intake, 1 exhaust, & 1 on the cooler. BTW, the rear slot covers can be replaced, hold them in position. Then close the latch on them, & you can solder the covers in place. On mine I can swap the side covers from side to side. You have 34 icons on your screen, & they always use resources. What I did in the old days, was go to Documents, & add a folder. Name it Shortcuts, right-click it & drag a shortcut to the folder to the Desktop. Then lasso all the icons on the desktop. Drag them into the Shortcuts folder. Now you've got a clean desktop that will save a few system resources. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

I have that same board in my computer I built in 2006. Gigabyte 965. Still have it and game with it. I used it as a daily computer until 2018. It then sat for a few years and I recently I wiped it and reinstalled window xp. Good computer for it’s day. Spent like $4000 building it then. Haha, kept watch and my computer is a similar master cooler also. So your theme is correct.

What's the spec though?
@Falkenroth1
@Falkenroth1 2 года назад
@@GTFour well I built it mid 2006 so the CPU is an Intel E6600 with 4 gigabytes of RAM. The graphics card is a GeForce 6800 GS with a western digital 300 gigabyte hard drive. Thermaltake 600 watt power supply. All installed in a master cooler case. Installed one dvd burner, one floppy and one standard CD player. Built it to play WOW. Performed well compared to my dell dimension I had before it.

SSHDs make good XP drives, cheap for mass storage and has SSD caching without the TRIM worries. Been running a FireCuda in my XP build for 4 years now.

My 8800gtx just cooked 2 days ago. Fix, tear it down clean the paste and thermals and bake at 385 degrees for 10 min conventional oven. It runs better than it ever has.

@@tennickjestzajety69 I'm an American-I f i remember my science classes,water boils at 100 C (212 F). So 250 C would be roughly 530 F,a normal temperature limit for an American Oven, So it is definitely 350 F= 176.667 C. I am a mathematical idiot but Google isn't. LOL

i like the design of those old graphics cards so much. looks way better than todays monolithic slabs that need a private power station to run them. generally the windows xp era of gaming hardware is my favorite time period

I have run win xp on a 770gtx. The highest xp does support is the 980gtx. As for ram xp 32bit does support 64gb ram with pae. Not sure if it does support 8 core 16thread cpus. But I know for a fact my q9550 is supported. And voodoo 2 does work on xp. Actually have a video in the works for a very overkill xp rig and more of a concept build :)

X79 support for Windows XP 32/64 is still alright today. Core i7-4960X (X79) DDR3-1866 [Socket 2011] Core i7-4930K (X79) DDR3-1866 [Socket 2011] Core i7-4820K (X79) DDR3-1866 [Socket 2011] Z87 support for Windows XP 32/64 is decent, depends on motherboard manufacturer. Z97 support may be pushing it, but drivers do appear to exist. Also, triple check a CPU is supported and the BIOS is available for the motherboard you pick. "this game does pre-date this graphics card by quite a few years"... NFS:MW debuted in November of 2005, meanwhile the 8800 GTX debuted in November of 2006, pretty much exactly 1 year apart. Maybe it just feels like the graphics card is several years newer because the 8800 GTX really was that far ahead of its time.
@JackStavris
@JackStavris Год назад
yeah I always forget that the 8800 GTX launched in 2006, probably because most of my memories of it from back in the day are from '07 or '08 when I was really getting into custom PC hardware.

Ssd will be worth putting in for sure, some ssd's from 2012 - 2013 should have windows xp software too do trim still. I know the intel 330 60 gb i have supports trim on windows xp & should still outlive this pc for sure heh took me 7 years of daily use too get below 100% health, should be really cheap as well at this point depending on the size you buy, but even for windows xp I'd go 120 gb at minimum just for some extra space in case you reuse it for another build at some point. And too limit thermals a bit & help with heat I'd put rivatuner server statistics too use & set a 65 - 121 fps limit or similar depending on the game you run, newer ofc you should limit fps a bit closer too screen hz. Some old games won't react too the rivatuner fps limiter but it will help keep any gpu you put into this alive better without some games main menu's & loading screens running rampant with the fps in the thousands or 100's which was common during the mid 2000's. Lastly I'd consider finding a later 2009 graphics card with 1 gb vram or 512 mb like a HD 5750, hd 5770 1 gb, gtx 460 should have a 768 mb model. A gpu like the hd 5750 runs with a much lower tdp & is a bit less likely too die out of nowhere as well. Only thing missing is perhaps a cold cathode kit & a soundblaster soundcard like a soundblaster x-fi Fatal1ty or similar. That monitor could use an upgrade sourcing a viewsonic perhaps, usually used sony tubes. I'm still a bit dissapointed i didn't pick up the one i came across a few years ago, was a crystal clear picture on it after some very minimal adjustment at 2048x1536 max resolution & did 1600x1200 @ 85 hz too. You can install the drivers without geforce experience, just need too do custom installation rather then quick install.

Yeah I've thought about the SSD, would probably go with a 120 GB. I have an old SanDIsk 120GB SSD as the boot drive in my file server, which I'd like to rebuild at some point as it's quite old, so I could repurpose that in the XP rig. As for the monitor, I've been on the lookout for a better monitor for a long time, the HP one in the video belongs to a matching Vectra VL400 desktop in my collection, so I wouldn't mind finding something else a bit better, however higher end CRTs aren't very common these days, a nice 19" or 20" Trinitron of some kind would be ideal, but the people who have those know what they're worth to retro enthusiasts and collectors so they jack the prices up beyond what they're really worth, and trying to ship one is way too expensive and too risky considering people don't pack things properly. I don't have the ability to drive somewhere and pick one up, otherwise I'd totally do that, so I'm limited with my options. That being said, the HP CRT I'm using was very lightly used when I got it and has quite a good picture, so I'm mostly happy with it.

That's a very nice and decent XP machine Mine is an Athlon 64 x2 6000+ ASUS motherboard (AM2) 4gb of ram 4x1gb 240gb SSD for the boot drive 320gb laptop hard drive for the file storage drive The only thing that I need to do in my XP rig is to get a better GPU than the Radeon HD5450 that it currently has

@@JackStavris I think most people realise you wouldn't deliberately destroy good hardware, but you were kidding yourself if you thought that a case with no airflow wasn't going to roast whatever you put in it. You clearly have a good understanding of PC hardware, which is what is so frustrating about it. A $20 case and a few fans, maybe some thermal paste would've kept those cards running much longer. Glad to see you've ditched that awful case for something with a mesh front.
