I knew ever since that communitt post that this video is going to leave my jaw hanging the whole time, but the fluidity with which you achieve many combos that my longer than average fingers still struggle to achieve made me reconsider a few things. My thumb especially only rests on the spacebar, the potential is extremely underutilised. Fantastic eye opener of a video.

As someone who preses all of the "pinky keys" with my thumb (shift, ctrl, etc), Ultrakill keybinds have been a really rough time for me. Still trying out some different keybinds but I'm really struggling to find something that I feel comfortable with, although this video is definitely very helpful. Great video!

About variant switching: I use the mousewheel to switch variants. It lets you do certain things like railcoining/nuking (depending on which rail you have as your first in order) way faster. I use the option which reverses the scrolling direction so scrolling down chooses the next variation, because I find scrolling up much less easy. When I do need to switch to my third variation (Sharpshooter or Screwdriver), I just use both the weapon's keybind and a downscroll simultaneously. Here is my layout: WASD + Space - Movement + Jump Shift - Dash Ctrl - Slide (My pinky naturally rests with the top on shift and the middle section on ctrl, so I can just shift the pressure to use dash storage) E + F - Punch + Change Arm (My WASD hand position makes it very easy to move my index finger from D to E, and it isn't too hard for me to move it to the right toward F) R - Whiplash (Not too hard to use with my index finger. I tried a mouse button, but I have the ball of my hand on my mousepad to easily aim without moving my arm so those are hard to reach) 1, 2, 3, 4 - Default (These buttons are just easy to press for me, and I'm very used to them) Q - Rocket Launcher (I used to use default, but I recently changed it after noticing I would sometimes go to the Rail when I wanted this and vice versa) I recently experimented with having the Rail on R when I temporarily switched the Whiplash on a mouse button, and it was pretty nice and convenient, but I prefer the Whiplash there and 4 is just fine. I do have easy access to C, V and B with my thumb, and I do use them for certain other games. I might decide to redo my layout, maybe with C as Change Arm so I can have something else on F (though if/when the KB gets its own button, I would most definitely bind it to F). I don't think I'll end up using my other mouse buttons (including mouse3) for anything. Not only are they hard to reach with my preferred hand position, but even the ones I have the easiest access to need too much pressure for me to properly use them in gameplay.

I don't think that railcannon ordering is about direct timesave. Well for me, it definitely isn't. But I can't say this about other speedrunners for sure. Anyway: it's more so about the fact that if you fail a nuke/UB, because you had to press more than just one button, you need to reset. The same problem does arise for railcoining, and it's variants, however the solution of just using the swap variant key in conjunction with the weaponbind is quite handy. The question then becomes, which option is more important for speedruns, and therefore which one you're willing to relegate to that little workaround. All of that to say, it's about consistency, not direct timesave.

been looking forward to this vid for a while! ive always felt that my keybind setup was a little clunky, but didnt know what could be done to improve it. currently on the clock so ill have to watch this later, but the first ~40 seconds were already amazing

I just found this channel earlier today and was looking forward to this video whenever it came out, I can’t believe my luck not even having to wait any time at all for it!

I have ESDW movement where it's like WASQ but moved to the right. You just move to the right with W. My ring finger handles all horizontal movement, because you never have to go left and right at the same time. My pinky is used for slide and dash and my index handles pretty much everything else. Like this I never end up in a situation where I can't move and do something at the same time. You also never have to change hand positions and you always press the same buttons with the same fingers. It takes a while to get used to, but I like it.

I didn't even consider that having the weapons on 1-5 was bad but it makes so much sense.

very interesting & intuitive video! i use the default controls, but since i use a trackpad to play, i changed secondary fire to right alt and slide to right ctrl (makes it easier on my left hand & just feels better) haha

UPDATE: Patch 14c has integrated the QuickFist mod into the main game

Don't worry, I also have overpump and blue rail on 1. I've had them like this for a long time and I refuse to change them.

the only cursed thing about this video is the fact that you use compact mode for discord text ok but seriously really good vid, very well edited and paced. i noticed that some keybinds i use werent really mentioned so i thought id list them! feedbacker is the button above my thumb on mouse, ive used it for melee for a while and it goes well with projectile boosting while swapping, speaking of, i have a third mouse button for my thumb that is behind the one i use for feedbacker, this means that every key for pro boosting is on my mouse, two of which being thumb lol dash is the default thumb button for my mouse, i always hate using both shift and control at the same time KB is set to ctrl, i use the mod also, still getting used to it though cause i changed it recently. before it used to be swap fists on F i have whiplash on E for a very dumb reason: its the default bind for terraria's grapple hook and it works very similarly railcannon on R, used to be ctrl but switched it a week or so ago last used weapon on Q slide on shift and the most cursed part: outside of railgun, i dont use quick swap, i use the scroll wheel (dw the button on it is broken so im not one of those *freaks* (/j) ) and i just do last remembered variant. i actually had no clue that people turn that option off lmao (also reverse scroll cause it makes more sense to my brain) how would you rate this? its comfy for me (also after watching your P-2 vids ive been trying to casually P rank it when im bored, got it twice in a row once so uhh thanks for introducing me to the pipeline i guess)

I do wish Ultrakill supported having more than one bind per key.

I’ll be honest by hands are so large that the only things I have rebound is punch and whiplash to mouse5 and mouse4 respectively

I have loved playing this game, but my monkey brain feels like im tasked to write Shakespeare. If theres a sixth wepon in act 3, im actually gonna have to get some mini keyboard for my simian feet dedicated for most weapon swapping. Im going to improve by using my thumb to reach better, wish me luck!

I use mostly default, but with punch and fist swap on my mouse side buttons (I'm considering getting Quick Punch, because I find that I barely ever use the KB, being as P-boost obsessed as I am). I found that I really needed to have a single hand in charge of projectile boosting to hit the timing consistently. Now that I'm more skilled, I could probably hit the timing with a keyboard input, but it's so baked into my muscle memory now. Also, we have the EXACT same loadout and weapon order, except I use default sharps. I share the exact same thoughts on the e-rail and pump shot in 1st.

I'm currently relearning the game with super different binds because of this video, and it's been a fun way to get back into the game after not playing much. Using mouse buttons and more spread out binds now I've noticed a lot more fluidity with stuff like pro boosting and general movement, but more heavy muscle memory combos like railcoin stuff is still pretty difficult (doesn't help I also recently switched mal rail to 1). Slightly cursed non default binds I'm using: Melee: Tab Slide: Shift Rocket Launcher: Q (you would not believe how much I spam rocket rides lol) Shotgun: E Swap Arm: C Railcannon: 2 or 3 idr Dash: MB 1 Swap Variant: MB 2 (this is a REALLY helpful bind for a mouse button) I don't know how but this is a 30min video on binds and not only did it not bore me but you got me playing again as well :)

I got: Revolver: Mouse 5 Shotty: 4 Sawblade/Nail: X Railcannon: Mouse 4 Rocket Launcher: Q Everything else is default. This video provided some really cool insight though.

my keybinds are (only the ones i've changed) punch: e dash: q slide: shift change arm: f any buttons that were by default on one of the changes keys are set to a key I don't use since they are features I don't care to use

pretty neat keybinds, a while back i put my rocket launcher on caps lock, and its probably what's worked best for me. I can reach it really easily with my pinky

I find Mouse 5 to be my punch and Mouse 4 to be whiplash Dash is… X Slide is ALT Dash’s reason is the same you have with the thumb spacebar thing, ALT is because it feels right to be next to jump (bhopping)

ive kept all my movement binds the same as i find it easiest, but i have messed a little with weapon/arm binds i have 1 - revolver 2 - shotgun 3 - nailgun Q - railcannon E - rocket launcher F - arm swap Mouse 5 - punch Mouse 4 - next variation i have my punches set up like that so i can easily parry and more importantly, i can projectile boost and shotgun swap using only one hand and two fingers, i flick my thumb from mouse 5 to mouse 4 right after shooting, so its really convenient for me to do! and i keep my weapon binds around my A, W, and D keys so that i can swap between weapons, where i get 1, 2, and 3 with just my middle finger and Q and E with my ring and middle finger respectively

Earlier in 2022, I was experiencing a problem for my fingers not easily being able to hit the crouch button in some source games, so when I picked up ultrakill and found sliding was c (maybe I bound it that way, but for crouching in most games it was usually x so its not a big deal)

I very much enjoy my side mouse buttons when I play ultrakill. Also I use punch and dash on side mouse buttons with whiplash on scroll wheel. I used to play on a dining chair but i do have a gaming one now

I for some reason just can't reliably use left ctrl as a bind, as I my pinky doesn't like moving that way, but as my thumb is happy to do so I use Alt instead, which I find most people just don't bind, something I find absurd as it's one of the easiest keys to reach and use for me. Perfect for slide, as slide jumping and slam storage becomes easy, and and I can comfortably alternate between dashing and either sliding or slaming, as the keys use the thumb and pinky respectively.

this game is singlehandedly responsible for the muscular imbalance between my left and right arms

Using default bindings worked for a while but the game is too advanced nowadays. I'm going to copy yours and restart my campaign and see how it goes. Looks fun having so much quick access to everything. I almost never use rocket launcher because reaching to hit 5 is a pain lmao

I have my arm controls on my keyboard, for my left hand to access (Q for swap arm, E for whip, and F for punch), and my gun controls on my mouse for my right hand. Also 12345 gang. My movement keys are default. My left hand always moves like it's having a seizure but honestly for me I feel comfortable with constantly having to readjust and move my left hand.

You've got a very similar approach to keybinds as me, which is cool to see. I'm suprised you haven't swapped to ESDF.

My keybinds are all default except E for variant switch Q for last used weapon Mouse 4 for change arm variant My weapon order is actually the same as you lmao,marksman on 1 is just good for general dps, especially paired with electric rail on 1 too. Electric rail is just more useful than mal rail I think. I thought about putting SRS RL on 1 because I haven't mastered rocket riding yet and use rockets more for dps, but I decided to keep freezeframe on 1 anyway just so I can rocket ride from the ground. After trying out your keybinds, I really loved putting shotgun on Q and punch on V, it's actually more fun! Others I need to adapt more

As an octopus, I see this as an absolute win

So um, I use default keybinds, but I don't use my pinkie finger. So when I want to be able to press jump and slide close together, I press ctrl with my thumb and space with my index finger. This sounds unnecessary, but I have really bad trigger finger in my pinkie, so it wouldn't be much use to me.

my bind are: f - swap fist mouse 5 and 4 for punching and whiplash(i just cant remember numbers of my side buttons,but forward = fist,back = whiplash) else is default,but i may change bind for rocket launcher

My weirdest bind is probably Knuckleblaster on Mouse5 (4? idk, the one that's closer to front) Also I absolutely cannot emagine playing without having a separate bind on every arm, switching arms sounds like hell to me

I'd really only recommend changing your keybinds if you have mouse buttons, it can be pretty useful

ok sure the keybinds are neat but can we talk about how *smooth* that opening cybergrind is it's crazy, also i saw a few style bonuses that maybe it's because i was taking a break before layer 7 came out but +ROCKET BOOST at 1:37 ? also +ULTRAORBITALZAP at 1:52 ? am i just dumb or maybe it's slightly modded or there's an update i missed huh??

My keybinds are ijkl movement, forward mouse button dash, backward mouse button slide, scroll wheel weapons, Normal left and right click, h for normal punch, n for knuckle blaster, u for the grapple, ; for switch weapon variant They probably sound very fucked up but it’s just left handed

As someone with 300h in overwatch, I instantly rebinded punch to V and with the recent change, knucleblaster to C, and also as someone without extra buttons on mouse please send help I'm literally running out of buttons.

For me I use my ring finger on a lot of keys with the default keybind setting When projectile boosting I use my ring finger to press 2 and 1 cause my main strat is core sniping so pressing both 2 and 1 with one finger is great Also I put my middle finger on D when pressing F to projectile boost and click on 2 with my ring finger to switch shotguns which also works for any other movement key Granted my hand is SMALLER than yours and I also draw so my keyboard is at a permanent somewhat sideways position to allow my tablet to still be on the table And uhh before the cybergrind rework I was top 100 :D now I'm 400 cuz edgestalling makes me pull my brain out

Putting punch to middle mouse button makes it a lot easier. Also im used to putting my hand on my keyboard in a way that lets me click ctrl with the area below my pinky instead kf curling my pinky all the way down. Its very handy since its one less action i have to perform with le finger.

My keybinds are kind of a repeat of doom eternal binds. Being: 1, 2, 3, E, shift, ctrl and space are left at default Q for whiplash F for the rocket launcher Alt for the railcannon Mouse forward for punch Mouse back for arm swap

for me, i kept the binds as the default except for arm swap being v cuz trying to press g in a heat of a battle is just damn uncomfortable

I used to play minecraft pvp, using a lot of keybinds and the only thing I kept was mb4 macroed to 3 for some reason idk i guess i can get to nailgun faster

I just don't have that thumb mobility saddly, the keys above spacebar feels so awkward like when i was learning touch typing with the q and p (i'm trying things out and i might be able to use it comfortably if i get used to it)

I have all of the vanilla keybinds, save for the Feedbacker/Knuckleblaster switch, which I rebound to middle mouse button. It's way easier to switch arms for me that way.

i use w, space, major assists, and the mouse. thats it, theres too much for me to handle otherwise edit: i did just start playing today so i should be doing better in a few months

I find having the movement keys on default to be pretty dang intuitive but that might be because ive had practice with speedbridging in minecraft, otherwise i find our other binds to actually be quite similar :) revolvers - q shotguns - e nailguns - mouse5 rail - f rockets - mouse4 punch - c swap arm - r whiplash - x and variant swap on v tho i dont use it also do you have a link to that discord server you showed in the video or is it private? thanks and great video :)

one of the main hurdles i have while playing ultrakill is switching weapons. i cant for the life of me, attempt to switch weapons, to the point where i finished gabriel's first encounter with just shotgun proboosting after 83 tries, i fucking hate switching weapons with the num row, my feeble fingers are not up to the task hope this video helps me
