I strongly agree with most of the points in their discussion. I kept Olly's tips in my inbox because I knew he was practically learning other languages and the best way to teach is to be the student first. I'm learning languages and definitely, I am quite aware of the difficulties and unique struggles one has to go through. Every language possesses its own creative 'identity' so to speak which characterizes the people who own and use it. Language always bears that 'peculiar' social and cultural dimensions which no apps or course can map out.

I ordered the book just ten minutes into the video. The opening topic ("transfer") was already enough to indicate Mr Young as someone with something new to offer struggling learners like me.

Read the book and it has definitely helped me improve my independent Chinese study and Calculus review for my teaching credential. I can't recommend it enough.

Fascinating interview. Thank you. I'm finally beginning to realize that my online APP is not allowing me to improve my French. Not any longer. It's time to move on and do more relevant and contextual work, and put into practice all your advice Olly.

What about reading?

if you learn something language very alien, the batter way is break it down to little piece, like learning violin.learn some basic things first,in language it's like 500 basic words. then learn the whole language, dont use too much time in pieces ,spend time in speaking or reading real language material. Step by step ,from easy level, grade book to real adult book.

there are a lot of things in language learning, vocabulary and grammar only constitute 20% of whole language. through using the language as a tool ,like reading ,listening, communication, etc. get the rest 80% of the language.

I know what you mean, and it's probably too much for most people. However, if you really seek to understand something, you need to get into the weeds, right?
