I kept a small kit on me, I came across a mountain biker on a trail who was seriously injured. I made it work, but someone else came along with a really big first aid kit and it was more efficient to the situation to the point we were able to dress the wound well enough to make a low risk, walk out evac for the mtber. I already decided to carry my full kit on day hikes again. That biker is lucky two WFR's happened to come by.

Excellent presentation. Very informative with no excessive commentary. I was thinking of putting together a similar video for training my scouts and scout leaders. You just saved me a lot of time as I can refer them to your video. Thank you

Thanks for the great videos! Instead of mole skin, I travel with a small roll of paper tape (made by 3M and available in first aid aisle of the drug store). It's thin and much easer to apply to hot spots, and it doubles as medical tape when applying gauze to a cut or burn.

Great stuff once again. just a lesson learned the hard way, if you are like me and depend on glasses/contacts- bring a backup! Nothing sadder/scarier than watching your glasses slide off your sweaty nose and tumble down a cliff ! Glasses lanyards may look a bit goofy but can be a real life saver if you take a tumble and your glasses come off! I also have taken a close-up picture of my glasses/contacts prescription and keep it in my phone so when I get to town I can get a new pair with a lot less hassle!

Donald Orcutt Thanks Donald. Good points. Yeah, I'm a contact wearer as well and I always try to bring a spare set or two. Having a backup plan for sight is always a good idea. Thanks for your comment!

don orcutt This was one of my biggest worries, I've also had problems with contact lenses slipping out in showers or when a big splash of water hits your face. So I've decided to go with laser eye surgery a few months before I head out on the trail. It's a lot more expensive, but if you're a regular hiker then it might be worth looking into it. You don't have to worry about keeping your contact lenses clean and more importantly carrying a bottle of saline solution will surely add weight to your pack.

I like the lists. Now that I'm old I always carry a muscle relaxant as my daughter has done a number on my shoulders. I carry quick clot, an emergency straw, and an Israeli dressing (my kid is accident prone)

small packs of burn ointment and small break tubes of polysporin are great for trips with the kids to and add almost no weight.

First aid kits should also always contain Quick Clot for serious accidents. :-)

If you have an MD friend bring more serious pain killer pills, or if you have some left from when you where prescribe them they are good to bring

this may be a dumb question, but why the diarrhea pills? is that a frequent problem while hiking?
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521
@gytisdramblewolfskis8521 6 лет назад
certain poisonings from water result in diarrhea, among other things. And it's not something easy to deal with in wilderness.

I keep seeing backpacker carrying pocket knives, People stop doing that if you want just one knife get a fixed blade. Believe it or not in most cases a fixed blade the same size as that pocket knife you have been carrying will be lighter and is always more capable. If you are really worried about weight get a mora knife. You will be more prepared and may even save a few ounces! Oh and like 99% of people I see on the trail have an insufficient first aid kit, If you are not prepared to stop heavy bleeding with a tourniquet and pressure dressings then you are NOT prepared.

CrazyIrishMedic it depends on where and who I’m going with. It should also depend on your skills, there’s no point in carrying something you don’t know how to use so get some first aid courses in. If I’m in a group we will generally have one good sized first aid kit and then everyone else can carry whatever extras that they feel they need. If I’m by myself or in a smaller group I will generally carry my small basic kit, it will be plenty for anything minor and anything that’s a little worst I figure I can head out for. If it’s something really bad....well let’s hope that doesn’t happen or if it does happen I’m in a well traveled place for others to help me. Most places I’m backpacking or hiking are pretty popular or have a least some cell coverage so I feel like I’m covered. That’s just my opinion and you are welcome to yours, just thought I would chime in. As for knives, carry whatever you feel you need. If you want to make a campfire you might want something bigger and a small saw. If you are opening food and cutting cheese than get something for that. I sometimes will carry my benchmade and sometimes just a small swish Army knife, which I keep on my keys but whatever floats your boat is good :)
