Welcome to the very first episode of Work Hard Fish Hard! In this episode, I take out my ultralight fishing rods to do a little bass fishing in a small river. It was a pretty challenging day of fishing but I was able to get into some spicy little smallmouth bass. Smallmouth bass in a river with light line? Yeah, that is pretty fun!

This summer I fish 3 days a week after work. Use my ultralight exclusively. My favorite spot is 5 minutes from my office!!!! Funny you made this video, it is a great idea. My wife thinks I come home in a much better mood after fishing. Go figure.

My dad and I fished every night after work, I'd cycle to his job and wait for leaving time, carry his case to the car and then we'd hit a random dam.

Good idea for a series. Only so many good days in a year (or a lifetime), so let's use 'em. Slow fishing is better than no fishing.

Great idea for a series! I learned this year (before your series) from you, and a couple of other channels, to appreciate fishing from the bank (the way I and almost all of us started our fishing "careers"). I got so wrapped up with kayak fishing over the last 10+ years I completely gave up fishing from shore. But I realized how much I missed the simplicity of it and its definitely a great way to fish when you're pressed for time. It's great just grabbing a pack, a rod or 2 and hitting a river or pond and seeing what happens. Thanks buddy. And congrats on the new series. I'm sure its gonna rock!

Thanks Fitz! Yeah I love kayak fishing most but simply don’t always have time to get it out. Always enjoy your river fishing videos where you wade around. Honestly, you look like you have some of the coolest spots to fish. Definitely looking forward to this series, holler if you ever have feedback!

Love smallies as well. My "go to" favorite ( for 25 years the Chenango River was across the road from my house and now I work at a plant on the Susquehanna River). If you hear the drag clicking - stop reeling. That's what puts twist in the line with a spinning reel. Either pump and reel, or set the drag higher.

There is a lake between my house and work that I stop at sometimes on the way. The only shore access is from the boat launch, but with a good cast you can bait and wait on trout. It's a nice way to start the day.

“Nobody makes me bleed my own blood!” One of my favorite all time movie quotes. 👌🏽 On the real though, I love that you’re doing this series. While many wish they could do RU-vid fishing as a full time job, most of us have our own individual careers outside of our love for fishing. Which brings me to this question, What do you do for work outside of making fishing videos? In solidarity, I’ll answer too. I’m a full time Director of Liturgical Music at a Catholic Church and part time professional opera singer! 🎶 Anyone else? What do you do outside of your love for fishing? 🙌🏽

it's heavier in the hand but when it comes to ultralight braid I use my 2500 or 3000 to help manage it more better, it ain't perfect but definitely less frustration I've noticed. softer overhead lobbing also helps me control the line flow off the reel more too since it seems the faster the spoon or whatever I'm chucking flies, the more the braid bungles up on me. I do have 4# Fireline Braid on a 500 but that is my 20'/creek/trout combo on a 5' rod that I usually underhand cast with, and only for creeks or within like 20' of me on a bank, I'd *never* try to whip that one out to bomb it _!_

Great video. I love your Season One topic - Ultralight Bass Fishing. Here’s a question... In your vid you were wearing a High-Viz shirt while fishing the river. And you were generally casting with the sun to your back. - When fishing, I generally try to wear colors that somewhat blend with the background in order to be less visible to the fish. For example, I may wear a dark colored shirt if fishing a forested area or a light colored shirt when the background is prairie or mostly sky. I’m not at all sure whether this makes any difference to the fish. Any thoughts on an angler’s clothing color or visibility to fish. How easily is a bass spooked if it sees a fisherman? Thanks
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 4 года назад
I never think much of it but I guarantee you’re exactly right, especially in clear shallow water like I was fishing. Probably should have ditched the neon shirt haha

What size is your president xt I have the 25 on my ultralight 13defy but it feels like it’s not throwing how it should do I need to downsize on my reel?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 года назад
I have the 20 but would prefer the 25. The 25 should cast further than the 20. If you want more distance, lower the diameter of your fishing line! I use 2lb monofilament these days and can get a lot of distance with it!
@GT-ho6co
@GT-ho6co 3 года назад
I’m new to ultra light fishing and having trouble getting any distance on casts with 5ft 6in rod. What do you suggest? What are you using as weights or lures?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 года назад
Great question! My main recommendation is to downsize your line. I get really good distance when using 2lb monofilament. I can even cast 1/80oz Mule Jigs with small plastics. But if 2lb is too intimidating, 4lb monofilament is fine too.
@GT-ho6co
@GT-ho6co 3 года назад
@@FishAnything I’m using 4lb mono. Casting distance is terrible. Using trout magnets no split shot or weight added I think I might need to add weight??

Nice job with the new series. For me; work hard fish hard means pond fishing after work. Can I recommend if you’re going to fish a wacky rig on UL gear that you switch to a 3” stick worm? Why braid on your ultralight? How do you stop all the bird nesting? I’m still trying to learn the baitcaster.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 4 года назад
I’m a huge fan of braid on all my spinning reels. I’m learning that the 6# braid is more of a headache than a good idea 🤣 I think I’m gonna try to use nanofil next time I spoil up. As far as baitcaster goes, just increase the brakes on the reel to start and slowly ease off them. That should help you get a feel for it!
