Using an ultrasonic thickness gauge to measure the thickness of a Perth Mint gold bar based on the expected velocity of sound through gold, which is 3240m/s. If this bar had any inclusions such as tungsten with a higher velocity (i.e. 5170m/s), it would have given a thinner reading than actual.

Great info guys!! We use similar tools here in Panama to fight the onslaught of fake bars.

I would definitely own one of those if I was the owner of 50oz gold bars.. Another great video !! Thanks again !!

Could you please mention any actual results for tungsten inclusions in gold? If your demo bar had been pure tungsten what thickness would you expect to see reported? Thanks for this very useful video.
@LuckayAtThings
@LuckayAtThings Год назад
What you would see is a gold thickness that is MUCH too thin. like if that 50 oz bar only had a thickness of 3MM, that would be something that would indicate a tungsten (or some other metal) coated bar.

How much is an ultrasonic thickness gauge. Where can I buy it?

Would it spot ''fake gold'' ? Because the stuff used would be a small layer of gold and another metal/material in it with probably the same weight?
@tigerlilly3727
@tigerlilly3727 3 года назад
yep. thats the point. plated stuff (even with same density, like tungsten) has different sonic properties

Does ultrasound test work on sealed gold bars (5 gram Pamp for example)? I'm planning to get a cheap ultrasound tester for simple testing purposes.
@ptaeiy
@ptaeiy 3 года назад
No. It needs probe to metal contact through gel couplant as shown.

Woah that 50 oz gold bar is about 3 million USD in current price, you can buy several houses and some sport cars with that.

LMAO, you're not good at maths are you? say 1 oz is $2000 usd, 50x 2000 = $100,000, nowhere near a million or much less 3 million USD BAHAHAHAHA

would this do any metals or just gold
@Fanta....
@Fanta.... 2 года назад
I would think any metals, you just need to know the expected value of the speed at which the ultrasound passes through to know whether the item you are testing is within those parameters

But what happens when the tungsten metal is melted and fused with the gold inside where there is no clear boundaries where the gold ends and tungsten starts
@ptaeiy
@ptaeiy 4 года назад
Firstly, tungsten melting point is very high. Secondly, it wouldn't matter as when the sound wave reaches tungsten part(s) it will give errant reading.
@ptaeiy
@ptaeiy 3 года назад
it doesn't matter since the combined speed of sound of the new alloy will be different than the gold or tungsten. If it's say 70% tungsten and 30%gold, the new alloy speed of sound (celerity) is 0.70(5170)+ 0.30(3240) = 4591.

@@tigerlilly3727 how reliable is it?
@tigerlilly3727
@tigerlilly3727 3 года назад
@@bootangy its got its issues. i havent attempted detecting any fakes (havent got any...that i know of...), so i cant tell you for sure. if you get one, get one that has a smaller probe as well. standard size is diameter 8mm, see if you can find a 6 mm. also helpful for edge measurements of 10 oz bars and tiny goldies.. it will tell you the width of whatever cross section yoiu are measuring, so the stamped surface presents a margin of error. on top of that, coins are quite thin, so the error is relatively large compared to the measured distance. and also the measurement error of the machine is more significant the smaller the distance you are measuring. on a coin it could be significant. it may be so significant that you cant tell if its measurement variation or material variation. having said that, on eagles theres a flat spot where you can just fit a 6mm probe. id feel comfortable using that exact spot and comparing values across coins, using a known silver as reference. I suppose that you can do that with any type of coin, choose a spot, and stick with it. ive got the wt130a from ebay, its got the small probe. if i was just doing coins, i probably wouldnt get the device. with bars it makes sense because bars are more expensive, so there more fakers incentive, and the device gets more reliable on larger distances. oh yes, and ofcourse: the measurements are a bit fiddly! it takes a sec to get the probe out and connected, placing the probe, and then you have to clean off the coupling agent (just wipe it). this makes sense for bars, and maybe if you have a bunch of coins. but if you just wanna do a coin now and then...it would be inconvenient. maybe for coins, the sigma metalytics pro is the 'king' device to get. doesnt get more convenient than that... low budget version: magnet slide and ping and compare with known silver coin, as you probaby know. hope this helps :) lemme know if theres anythings else.
