Midge Ure was such a great front man for Ultravox. His vocals are amazing and electronic backing music is brilliant. I have a greatest hits of Ultravox on CD. Whenever I play it I'm reminded about what life was like for me in my 20s. I was a teenager in the 70s and loved all the music and loved the music of the 80s. I was working, courting, got married and at the end of the 80s became a dad. This year 2024 i will be 62 and my daughter will be 33 time flys it really does.
I'm 60, my daughter will be 33 this year, have a 9 year old autistic grandson, who is my whole world! Yeah, this is worlds apart from when it came out. Just sitting back this afternoon, and the album Vienna came to mind, had to blast this through my soundbar and subwoofer I have out back of my house! Good to know there's someone else who still digs Ultravox!
I've been an Ultravox fan since their first album. I still listen to them. Just reading Midge Ure's memoir, which is what brought me here. I hope you've instilled a taste for good music in your children. My daughter loves the albums Vienna and Rage in Eden.
One of the best things abou being 15 years older than you is that I had the great privilege to play/write (outta radio by then) about this music for you and countless others in clubs n pub(lication)s. I wasn't alone, but we weren't legion. We thank you for listening. Here's where I do my Mr. Burns 'Excellent!' hand rub. Lol. Seriously. We knew, just had to spread the gospel. Takes time. Your turn to turn those you love onto what you love. Oh! Total strangers are totally fair game, too. Even more insidious and everlasting. Trust me.
Yep exactly. Im 52 . Worked hard and now mortgage free debt free and own everything ive worked for. Being an 80s music fan its helped me through life . Non of this modern shit
@@philipsleddenhouston6764 OMG I'M 52, TOO! And mostly debt free(that'll be tomorrow) and a little mortgage left, but that's my sister's. You"re invited aboard my time machine to return to the 80s.
Not completely unrecognized. On Comic Relief he did a sketch with Geldoff with Stephen Fry as banker "And you're?" "Ure". "No, you're..." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UazcUZHGFjI.html
@@AlanCockerillI think Bob Geldof is probably more famous and is probably worth more money than Midge Ure, but in terms of artist endurance I think Midge is the superior talent. He sold the rights to 150 of his songs quite recently for an undisclosed sum of money. I hope it was an enormous sum, and that he never has to think about his spending ever again.
I remember when I had seen this particular masterpiece for the first time. Living as a teenager behind the Iron Curtain I suddenly discovered Ultravox. It was love at first sight. They had lots of fantastic records, but "All stood still" is my favourite.
@@2degucitas In Poland it was not as bad as in USSR or East Germany, in 80 some radio stations (governmental) were airing western music - no copyright of cours, and we woul record it from radio. Buying LPs or CDs was another story. Ultravix visitet Poland on tour - 1987, at that time Iron Curtain was already corrodong heavily😉
Brilliant vocalist and you forgot to mention great sense of styling. Keyboardist Curry was playing in Gary Numan's band just before their Vienna period before Ure joined. Happy Days
But, oh, that moustache. John Foxx would never have gone near facial hair. Did love that first LP - twixt glam and punk. Saw 'em live once, small joint. Incendiary, if that's even possible drenched in sweat. Only had the one record under their belt, so had to do one song twice as the encore. 'Saturday Night', as I recall.
Several decades later I can still feel the tension.....as the track nears the end on the radio's rundown of the charts, with my finger over the pause button of my cassette recorder, hoping that the DJ won't start speaking till the tracks finished. (STOP).....yeah, made it!!!!
@Simon P The only low point for me is the screeching guitar solo in the middle.....I bet their record executives wanted that, so that they could sell that to the American market, who were then heavily into Rock music.....i think they should have held their ground and said "NO".
So many great memories of the 80's are all tied together with my love of Ultravox! Because of the electronic sound I loved technology and now that I am in my 50's I can't get enough of listening to this amazing music! I just saw Midge Ure here in Buffalo NY last week and I am still in the afterglow of his presence!! Thank you Ultravox!!
Loved this song by ultravox absolutely awesome and I love all of there songs 🎵 ❤️ midge ure was a great vocalist of the group this takes me back when I was younger and in the eighties xxxx 🎶🎤🎹🎸🥁👍💙💃
this brings great nostalgia for me, i was only a small child in the 1980s but my brother who was 12 years older would listen to this music , he was a biker and so was all his friends , i was surrounded by this music , leather jackets, motorbikes ,the smell of petrol and me so young just wishing i was a part of it all...
I remember hearing this back in the day and being fascinated by how original it was (even in the time of New Wave). Recently, I was in a IHOP in Phoenix when it came over the intercom while I was in the bathroom. I had to RU-vid it immediately!
Underrated has to be used for someone who has had no real recognition, Midge Ure has organized the biggest event in the history of music, won numerous awards, had countless successes with many different projects, wrote the TOTP song in the 80s and their songs They continue to accumulate millions of listens on digital platforms more than 40 years later. How can that be underrated? Underrated are groups like The Sound or The Chameleons, who had and still have VERY little recognition, and those are well-known examples! If you want me to talk about undervalued we can go deeper, please, let's stop using that word so lightly!
I can't believe how many underplayed songs Ultravox have and how underrated the band are when people talk about the 80s and electronic music. Radio channels these days only ever seem to play 'Vienna' or occasionally 'Dancing with Tears in my Eyes'. Unless you're a fan of the band/this era, these classics go unheard. This is one of my favourites, but then I love songs that mix downbeat lyrics with an up-tempo beat and danceability.
Hi Blue Roses agreed . So many younger folk have never heard of them [I am 60 now] , so by younger I mean even in 40s lol. Have a listen to one of our little tunes 'Halo' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ohllyzp1kCc.html.
James Lehr...It sounds like DEVO and that's New Wave with an ART SCHOOL or FUTUREWAVE twist, IF you want to put them in a catagory, sooooo... I like DEVO! 😎
Had to just go settle down my youngest in bed and left the Kenny Everett video show playing on the TV. Heard the synth beats of this beauty drifting through the door and suddenly I was transported back 40 years to when I was the same age as my youngest. Not heard it for so long and had to immediately RU-vid it.
Midge was the coolest cat on the planet. Brilliant musician and artist. I wish more people knew of his genius. Ultravox was my identifier as a teenager in the 80’s and still love them just as much now 40 plus years later. Thank you for getting me through some bad times growing up.
Been a fan since 83, heard an interview with the band RUSH who said ultravox was an influence on their music! So naturally I had to check it out, love it love it love it.
What is the main criteria to make eyebrows Scottish 🤔 I bet somewhere deep in some educational department like BSO and BSME they must have 27 pages of tick boxes and criteria to fill out to define Scots eyebrows
@@pzolsky 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Now that is a talent ..and I see what you mean in that Video. Next time I come to Scotland I will be staring in everyone's face 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅
If you listen to the message in this song that came out back in the day when i was growing up, the message is talking about the future we now live with now...the Woke and the Oversensitive
The lights went out (The last fuse blew). The clocks all stopped (It can't be true). The program's wrong (What can we do?). The printout's blocked (It relied on you). The turbine cracked up. The buildings froze up. The system choked up. What can we do? Please remember to mention me, In tapes you leave behind. We stood still. We all stood still. Still stood still. We're standing still. The screen shut down (There's no reply). The lifts all fall (A siren cries). And the radar fades (A pilot sighs). As the countdowns stall (The readout lies). The turbines cracked up. The buildings froze up. The system choked up. What can we do? Please remember to mention me, In tapes you leave behind. We stood still. We all stood still. Still stood still. We're standing still. The black box failed (The codes got crossed). And the jails decayed (The keys got lost). Everyone kissed (We breathe exhaust). In the new arcade (Of the holocaust). The turbine cracked up. The buildings froze up. The system choked up. What can we do? Plese remember to mention me, In tapes you might leave behind. We stood still. We all stood still. Still stood still. We're standing still.
for me the 80's wasn't so much about chart bands, more so about the goth and post punk scene that grew around the same time, . i still appreciate the likes of Ultravox and AHA and Human League, you have to accept these were great bands, but for me the rise of Sisters of Mercy, Banshees, Cure and so many more
Love Ultravox Great video from a great band. Lets change the world together and take back the power we foolishly gave to a system that has betrayed us .Lots of love from the Tripzville [originally posted 4 years ago with zero likes , lets see if its shadow banned now lol ]
