The lead singer is named Midge Ure (Scotsman). He was one of the organisers of the Live Aid concert along with Bob Geldof (Irishman) lead singer of The Boomtown Rats. I was 15 in 1985 and this song was epic. This concert was a world changer. It was to raise funds for helping hunger in Africa and other places. It was the first big event of its kind ever and it showed the power that singers and artists had to create change and to support and give in different ways and to highlight special causes that most of us had never noticed. These were the original influencers.
Maybe, but there's a behind the scenes video that surfaced years later that showed some artists annoyed because they weren't being paid for doing it (because it was for charity). I think Sting was one of the main offenders... it's sad to see, but whatever. These Live Aid performances (especially Queen) are some of the most iconic live performances ever done.
An absolutely insane performance. He sings to perfection. This is the benchmark. Singing teachers play this to their students and tell them, this is what you're all aiming at... good luck because you're going to need it to beat this.
Ultravox should've been bigger in the U.S than they were. Midge Ure went on to have a successful solo career. At nearly 70 he's still touring and still hitting all the high notes. He's amazing! 🥰 (I've seen him twice: Once in 1990 with a full band, and then in 2015 with just his guitar. Just fantastic!)
Midge Ure and the giants of Synth Pop. Ultravox. he was a genuine style icon. he looks ragged here because he co organised the whole event had probably not properly rested for days. it was a massive gig, that spanned both sides of the Atlantic and was the first event to be viewed by more than a billion people. He also played lead guitar with Thin Lizzy for a bit. multi talented. all round good bloke.
@@AnthProductions Absolute nonsense. Most of the world didn't have access to a telly at that time. I've seen claims of 1b to 1.5b and I find that hard to believe.
Ultravox was a UK band. Thiis was a huge song in 1980, when electronic music was really taking off. Live Aid was a major event held in July 1985 to raise money for ppl who were starving in eastern Africa. Yes, Queen performed at this gig too. There was another huge gig happening at the same time in Philadelphia. The satellite beamed images across the Atlantic - the first time that had been attempted. We also had a fund-raising event in Australia called Oz for Africa. The whole thing was huge.
Actually, the Beatles performed "All You Need Is Love" live in 1967 and it was broadcast across the Atlantic and around the world by satellite. So this definitely wasn't a first!
I got to spend 7 days with Midge on the QM2 crossing the Atlantic back in 2018. He was one of the guest speakers. I think my wife and I were the only ones who knew any of his music outside of Live Aid. It didn't hurt that he knows my cousin, but we ended up spending some time talking and sharing a few drinks, great guy. Yes it was the same concert Queen played, Live Aid at the old Wembley Stadium.
I’ve spent hours watching this channel for the first time and I was so happy that he does Australian Artists, but this is one of my FAVOURITE songs EVER. I still listen to it all of the time
Midge Ure has an awesome voice. Big fan of Ultravox in the 80's. Pretty sure Vienna was the first album I bought and just sold it on ebay for $50 before xmas. Dont have a record player so tried top sell them all.
One of my favourite 80's songs, brilliant. Ultravox were great. I can only hope someone with more money to spare than me, requests the good stuff. Love your work man.
This the only song of there’s I know. The singer Midge Ure co-wrote the song “Do they know it’s Christmas “ with bob geldoff and also with bob co organised “band aid” and “live aid” and the song is the second biggest selling single in UK history. He is actually from Scotland not Australia This time lol
I'd love to see your reaction to Spandau Ballet 'Gold’, it's another 80's super band. And yes, Live Aid was a worldwide concert which was orchestrated to raise money to feed the starving children of Africa. It was a huge deal, that's why so many epic bands were playing🌏😊🎶🌈🇦🇺🏡🌴👣🦋🙏🌹🌹🌹
Ultravox is one of the few bands that had two fairly successful incarnations. The drummer (Warren Cann), bassist (Chris Cross) and keyboard/violaist (Billie Currie) were constant but initially John Foxx was the singer and the music was more punkish and glam during the mid to late 1970s. This lineup culminated in a great album: Systems of Romance which was the album that inspired Gary Numan to take up keyboards. Alas, that was their last album, they were dropped from their label, and John Foxx and guitarist Robin Simon left the band. Midge Ure, guitarist and singer out of the New Romantic and had played with Currie in a band called Visage which played at a nightclub (Blitz Club) where New Romantic brits partied including Steve Strange (who also appeared in Bowie's Ashes to Ashes video and was also a member of Visage). Vienna was the new Ultravox line up's first album and was a group effort. My two favorite Ultravox albums are Vienna and System of Romance so I like both incarnations. I tilt towards the John Foxx version but I also very much like the Midge Ure version.
I loved Ultravox Midge Ure's voice and their mixes of melodies, rhythms and electronics was unequalled in their time. Vienna was a huge hit, and it goes very much against the grain of music at the time. Check out The Stranglers "Golden Brown" - also a non main stream type song that was a huge hit in the 80s.
Just saw Midge Ure last night in Portland (8/25/24)and he STILL sounds like that. And yes that was the same stage Queen, Bowie,u2, Bowie played on at live aid in 85
Midge Ure with Bob Geldof put together the Band Aid "Do they Know it's Christmas" song, which then lead to USA for Africa. And then he & Bob put together the Live Aid concerts. Raised an absolute bomb fir charity & really changed how celebrities & musicians support charities to this day.
Great comments, enjoyed your take. If you like this, try "Astradyne" from the "Vienna" album....killer all-instrumental track. From "Lament" album, 2 big singles were "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" and "One Small Day"....both great tracks.
Your reactions to this are priceless! 💯👌 I know this song from back in the day on MTV. Forgot all about it and just rediscovered recently. Glad I came across your video !
I bought the album Vienna from hearing this song when it was released, loved it so much and certainly wasn't disappointed with every other song on the record either. Really enjoyed your reaction to this. 😊
You're right that it's a movie soundtrack: watch the second to last episode (if I remember well) of American Crime Story, the Versace one. It fits perfectly.
Thank you very much for this class act reaction on this legendary band and Midge Ure. Actually he was lately, at his age of 70, performed a lot i USA.😊😊😊
I was 16 when this came out. Saw the original video (moody black and white, filmed in Vienna, natch.) and it blew my mind. Still have the record on vinyl and still play it all the time.
I love Midge Ure! They are fun to do 80's Tours with. He was on Howard Jones last Retro Futura Tour. Then went on Tour with Paul Young which they performed at Sony Music Hall. 2 fabulous vocalist in a space that showcased their talents. 😁🐰
The live aid concert here in the UK and the USA was packed out by the top performers of the day and yesteryear. The vast majority of the top performers performed for a worldwide audience on tv and concert goers. It captured approx. 1.9 billion viewers, on TV including the 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London and 89,000 people at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. The two events raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa.
The studio version is much better but I guess it would be a difficult song to replicate live. Hopefully someone will request a bit of "Falco" particularly the song Jeanny. He was Austrian so fits with your expansion outside the main countries.
No clue what I expected from this video... but I hope you have seen his rendition of Bowie's The man who sold the world. It's wild you have never heard of Ultravox though.
34 years later (2014) and Midge Ure still rocks this song. I'll never get tired of listening to him. Check out this live performance he did with Schiller: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OLKOULtglSQ.html
I don't know if anyone has stated this below. If I am not mistaken, this was not re-hearsed - Ultravox did this "cold turkey". A brilliant group - and of course being a "fellow Scot", a big fan of Midge Ure. This laddie can sing! This is not a soundtrack, nor is he an Actor. This was a whole era - Bowie, Gary Newman, Ultravox! It is the same concert as Queen - this concert you are watching Ultravox is Live Aid!
2:00 that day it was ridiculously hot, especially for England. About 95 f,imagine how hot it was on stage, under those lights,it was probably close to 110-115f and he's dressed in a trenchcoat lol.
