The Ulysse Nardin (UN) Marine Torpillier was released by UN as an answer for an “entry-level” model. What resulted from this was the Torpillieur line of the UN Marine. At its core is a UN Marine but stripped away are features such as luminescent hands and plots, applied indices, additional water resistance, extra rubber bobbles, and an integrated lug system that IMO is detraction from that version. What you still get is the UN-118 forever movement featuring what calibercorner.com writes is “DIAMonSIL is a revolutionary alliance of silicium and man-made diamond. It is an extremely light but hard material that eliminates friction and removes the need for lubrication of the escapement - the watchmaker’s holy grail (calibercorner.com, 2019).” Functionally I believe that you really don’t lose anything critical and while additional water resistance and nighttime lamination are nice-to-haves they are far from deal-breakers. While I am a proponent of applied dial intricacies vs printed, the UN Marine Torpillier was the first watch to change my opinion on the matter. The dial is clean and easy to read, ready for duty both in a suit and on the beach. To date I have worn the Torpillieur more than any other watch, over 120 days and counting since my purchase back in May, 2021. If it were not for my recent acquisition of a Breguet Marine 5817ST I would never part with this watch. For those looking for classical style with partial functionality, a Marine is the way ahead!
