Great to hear the evolution of this cadence from 30 years ago. Yes…it’s been honed and modified for at least that long. Fun to see the staff cheering at the ending phrase after the monkey beats…yea…it was clean. They nailed it. [I played 3rd bass in ‘91]
I wanna be a part of this next year so bad but I have very little experience with traditional grip and my high school doesn't have tenor so id be far behind on that too
Plenty of drummers, including myself, had no traditional grip experience before UMass! You will learn a lot by just trying, even if you aren't on snare your first year. In the Spring tech class you will also learn everything there is to know about the grip and technique UMass uses. You never know what could happen unless you try!!
@spacegiraffe What year would you be coming to UMass? A lot of people spend their first season on cymbals, then use the spring tech class to learn whatever instrument they want to play the next season. I'd probably say it's a bit late in the semester to hop into the drumline part of tech class if you don't know how to play traditional, but even if you're not coming to UMass next year, you should definitely look into coming into some tech classes next spring! We have a handful of highschoolers who come in regularly and it's been a massive help for them
