knowing and speaking are completely different things. when I'm chatting online noone can tell I'm not a native speaker but 5 words out of my mouth and I'll mess up at least twice

Umji stutters a lot when she speaks English. But her vocabulary and grammar are always shocking, Because her use of words are deep and amazing. She's better at English than me tbh. Eng is not my first language but i can speak in English quite fluently, but I'm like stuck in the fact that I'm only fluent because all i know is about communications and that's it. She explains it really well, she's just too shy when she's speaking in English
I agree. English is my second language as well, but I’ve lived for 15+ years in a native English speaking country so I’m pretty fluent in it. Like you said, she’s stuttering but it’s not because she doesn’t know it but more like she’s literally coming up with the words as she talks. And I’ve spoken English long enough now that it’s actually kind of difficult to speak naturally in my native language. Mostly because I don’t use it often. This is literally do to the way your mouth makes the sounds. She only needs to continue to use it to speak more fluidly.

I always impressed to any idols or celebrities who are not from english country speaking in eng bcause we know that they have an effort to learn english sometimes people didnt care about learning english but you know you can communicate with other people with different language easily so thats a Wow for me although im not even born in eng country but i have so much confident with my eng eventho im not fluent coz i still making some mistake with the grammar
They do learn English in school, but not many are confident to use it outside of school. its like how some ppl take Japanese lessons but are tongue tied when meeting a Japanese and is afraid to use it, thinking what if i said it wrongly or what if he doesn't understand me or reply back and i dun understand what he is saying.
@@lingth It's hard to learn english in korea even with 학원 because english exams in korea is more about history and they uses high level english which we don't use normally to speak
I teach English to Koreans of all ages and I didn't know that Umji could speak English this well. I want to commend her for constructing really natural sentences, which many of my students (even advanced ones) have trouble with actually. Her knowledge and sense of grammar and English syntax is really high. (disclaimer: Of course she's not totally fluent but considering that she hasn't lived in an English speaking country, her speaking ability is really good. :D)
The fact that Umji can almost immediately translate what her members are telling her to say is so impressive 😭 as a native English speaker (English is waning tho 😔) who speaks a good amount of Korean, I find it so unbelievably difficult to translate Korean to English.
Umji is so good at English, I genuinely wondered where she learned… I know she doesn’t speak english frequently but when she has to, she somehow manages to surprise me every time because she has quite the range for her vocabulary.
Her English is so good, from her pronunciation to her range of vocabulary even to her grammar. English is all about confidence and if she didn’t second guess herself her she would sound like a native speaker. No hate at all, I know she is quite a shy person and for her to put herself out there and speak a different language is really incredible. So props to her and she is so talented.
Umji's English is quite good. She has an accent ofcourse everyone who has first language will definitely have an accent. But given that some of the koreans(not all of them) are not really good in English Umji is quite impressive.
It is such a big disappointment that they didn't even got the chance to promote to the West. They could get really big but unfortunately SouMu failed to do so. 😢
This reminds me of Showtime with MAMAMOO & GFriend. GFriend were in Los Angeles and stopped at one of the "world famous" In-N-Out Burgers. Umji (with Yuju's help, I think) ordered all the hamburgers/fries and drinks for the group. The rest of the group were very appreciative when the food arrived. Their English was very good. I think Solar in MAMAMOO, in New York City, was their primary translator at the restaurant scenes. MMM's English was definitely a lot shakier!
I love how one can tell that she worked on her grammar, not an accent which is what so many idols fail to do whenever they are learning English for American/English interviews
Yes...she can speak english well. She coming from rich family which need her to speak english n she also love to watch disney since child. Aside from umji...yuju also can speak english even not as fluent as umji....yuju mother is english teacher.
Whoa I'm impressed with her English. I can only hear minimal Korean accent and she can convey her thoughts well. On top of that, she translated for the host and her members on the spot. She only needs more confidence!
The fact that Umji's mother is a English teacher and she's my crush and has a ATTRACTIVE FACE! Lastly, I'm not a fan of GFRIEND even though they disband since May 2021. Although, I like her personality when she meets her fans or strangers.

I don't think so. You will only develop an English Filipino accent when you're taught by a Filipino teacher and based on what Umji had shared, her teacher was American and she consumed many Disney movies too. If you watched Jessica Lee abt Filipino accent, then you will know that some Koreans look down to ppl who have accents that are NOT American, English, or Australian accents.

Umji doesn't speak English often but when she does it is always very fluent :) she's able to do this because her mom is an English teacher so she has been learning since she was very little!
No, Umji learned it by watching Disney movies which her uncle (migrated to LA) gifted her and would take vacations there since pre-debut of GFriend. That English teacher as their mom was Yuju's.
I know when a person be able speaks english althought not from a country that uses english language, its not a measurement of her/his intelligents . But please dont underestimate their hardwork for learn english because it doesnt come overnight .

in my opinion the ITZY members are super good at english and even a lot better than umji. they have a good english teacher. check out their english class vlogs, they’re so good. especially ryujin, i think she’s super smart
When umji becomes confident in her English, it's over. Btw I'm not saying she isn't but I can tell that she thinks a lot about what she is about to say, and if it's right which results in her stuttering and a little pause in between her sentences. But damn, if I didn't know her at all and she spoke to me like that I would be astounded because her pronunciation and execution of her sentences are well-spoken.
Every kpop group should have at least one or two english speakers so theyll not have a problem communicating with foreign fans or viewers or interviewers.of course we cant expect all of them to be fluent in english except for those who studied abroad or in an international school/university.its important to learn english coz its our universal language
