My grandfather also used to listen to this song, after he moved from Iran to Panama and then to Venezuela...It is amazing how her songs tuched so many people around the world and from many different religions. He was Jew but in his soul he was Muslim and always loved their company and felt comfortable and welcome. I wish and pray that music will bring more love peace and joy to our life on earth....

A quiet affair by her usual audience standards, but still magical. I listen to her on 78s and LPs as well as watching these clips and documentaries. My current read is Harriet Martineau's Eastern Life Present and past (Egypt Lebanon & Palestine), an 1875 edition. I find myself looking up the passenger ships of the time, and the horse drawn Omnibuses of Alexandria, then the steamship to Cairo, and I am reminded of the Saxophonist Ronnie Ross as she sees Cleopatras Needle before it goes to London. I listened to Ibrahim Maalouf's Kalthoum, a jazz trumpet tribute to her as well. If Bob Dylan and Maria Callas found her fascinating, why shouldn't the Jazz world. She sings a line, then improvises a rephrasing. It is as much jazz as any singing!

I love IT!!!!!! I love the first part of the song of um kalthoum we also have this song in a turkish version but not so good as the original! This song makes me wanna cry :(...
