Looks like rotational confusulion betwen plate ump and field ump. Field ump is in street cloths so I'm gonns guess he was just a parent grabbed from the stands and although he msy know the basics of umpiring a game He may not knoe where and when to be there. They got the call right though.

IMO, this was a good call by the PU to tell his partner that he will cover 3rd, when he saw he was out of position from not knowing how to come inside on a ball to the outfield. I think the FU then did the proper thing by coming to cover home, which is what you'd want to have happen in a normal rotation when the PU goes up to cover 3rd, and then there is an overthrow etc. Communication is key - whether rotations are "correct" or "optimal" or "trained" or not, by communicating with your partner, you make sure that plays are going to be covered, and you know who is responsible for the call at a base. I applaud both the PU and the volunteer umpire for communicating and making sure positions are covered for calls in this situation, and especially the volunteer umpire for stepping up and helping! This type of situation happens quite a bit in youth ball, especially when your training umpire/veteran is working the plate, and the rookie field umpire gets caught out of position. On a practical note, this is a 10u field, so full rotations are not as needed as they are on a full size field. If we want to provide some constructive criticism for the PU - remember that angle > distance when making calls; it is WAY more important to get the angle on a play, than to be close. He probably could have covered the play at 3rd by simply being around 10-15 feet up the line, about 5-6 feet in fair territory for an angle - that way, you get a great view of the play at 3rd if there is one, and in the chance there is an overthrow, you're distance to cover home is very short. Your working area as the FU on a 10u field is small - and you can get great angles of all the calls you'll need to make. Less movement sometimes is more. I give a solid A for covering this play to both umpires simply due to communication. Great call by the volunteer umpire as well, clearing up any confusion (which is our main job) regarding the tag at home - loved the left-handed punch-out.

this is why 60 foot base length should be a solo umpire, it's so much easier imo

This appears to me that the base ump may be some type of patent volunteer or something? My bet is no formal training? He was way too close to the play, in shorts and non-matching hat. So leads me to believe that statement. This results in mistrust by the plate ump so he feels the need to be everywhere at all times.

For one thing, both umpires were out of position. 1st base ump should have a trailed batter runner home plate should have stayed in the slot, then positioned himself 10ft or so at the top corner of the batters box, and made the call. Also, the runner was out of the base path. That is all!

Not only that we have an on deck batter interference with the play as well. We had all kinds of things going on here.

What got me at the beginning is the home plate umpire not moving the bat out of the way.

@Dave Cash USA Softball UIC says not to because you take your eyes off the ball. If I can, at times, I will try to kick it out of the way, if possible.

Honestly this isn't terrible beside the HP ump you could tell didn't trust the field ump. rotating to cover 3B is correct, the field ump waiting to watch the runner touch 2B then rotate is correct...only real problem was that the field ump was a little slow to rotate otherwise I'm good, also good job by HP ump letting field ump make the call after already telling him he was rotating

No miscommunication. This is a case of the base umpire not knowing his responsibilities. He needs to get his butt into the grass and take the runner to 3. From there, he can assist on the 3rd base half of the rundown. To give responsibility to the plate umpire, then take it back when it isn't his responsibility is bad umpiring and results in a bad call.

Well, the call he got correct, but right. The FU got stuck outside ... failed to get into the infield on time, so the PU signaled (and likely yelled) "I got 3rd." The FU is just a coach that helped umpire this game. Never trained on rotations and what not. I was impressed that he had the wear-with-all to cover home in the situation given PU went up the line. PU likely assumed he had the rest of the play and cut back to home on the overthrow, but then saw FU was taking it there. I assume PU then would have returned for the 3rd base side of the run-down if it occurred. Obviously not how things are supposed to happen, but a pretty good adaptation during the middle of the play to make sure every play is covered. PU should have gotten INSIDE fair territory which would have also made it easier to refuse back to home and stay out of the runner's way.

@@MJHBaseball There was never a play coming into 3rd. Ball remained in the outfield, so PU doesn't want to come into the infield. That puts him in the way on a throw home. If there was a throw to 3rd, then yes... Plus an over throw puts the ball in foul area so inside works best then.

@@MJHBaseball Total side note, very cool of the coach to take on FU duties. Here in Chicagoland, it's rare to have more than one umpire for anything less than high school varsity

@@MH-Tesla watch it again. There was absolutely a play at 3rd, but the shortstop didn't line up the relay throw properly and then didn't catch the throw to him. Had the ss caught the left fielder's throw, it's actually likely the batter-runner would have stopped at second. The batter-runner read the dropped throw perfectly in that he could make it to third, but either the batter-runner or the third base coach was wrong to have him running through third with a huge turn to head home. Plate umpire was probably worried about interfering with a throw had he gone inside the foul line, but that would have put him in the best position. And then he could have stayed put when he saw the field umpire rotated to home.

Who else has obstruction on F2? Looked like the runner had to deviate around F2 before F2 had the ball. Score the run!
@auzmo

No..not there..if anything out of the baseline. There was obstruction on F3 1st base, but I dont know how it affects a play like this with so many stops and starts

I had the same. Would like to know why it is not obstruction, if that is the case.
@iane2046
@iane2046 Год назад
@@colbykline7262 I would signal obstruction on F3, and in my judgement BR would have been awarded 3B on this play. The BR chose to advance beyond 3B at their own peril. In effect, the obstruction had no impact on this play, out at home. Obstruction does not protect the BR from continuing to advance. Had the BR been thrown out advancing to 3B the obstruction would take effect and he would be ruled safe.

i couldn't stop watching the on-deck kid (likely no where near the on-deck circle) who barely moved to get out of the way and was almost run over by the PU. PU should probably have a chat with both coaches about this.

I feel bad for PU. He’s the focus on several of these videos. I think I heard you say “he was in training” but I find that hard to believe being he is the only umpire in the game. Makes things real hard on him when there is no one their to train him. Just like in this case. There was no rotation at all in this play and there is never a rotation to home by U1 in two man mechanics. If the U1 was a coach or volunteered from the stands that’s fine with me. They are the ones that should have learned a lesson.
