The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a nonbinding Palestinian resolution demanding Israel ends its “unlawful presence” in Gaza and the occupied West Bank within a year.
The vote was 124 in support of the resolution. Fourteen UN member states voted against the resolution and 43 abstained.
The resolution demands the withdrawal of all Israeli forces and the evacuation of settlers from occupied Palestinian territories “without delay.”
Canada was among the members to abstain from the vote, arguing that it fails to recognize the atrocities carried out by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2024.
“We cannot support a resolution where one party, the state of Israel, is held solely responsible for the conflict,” said Bob Rae, Canda’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN had urged states to reject the resolution, describing it as an attempt to destroy Israel through “diplomatic terrorism.”
