In this video, the second in a series on Surrealism and cinema, I provide an analysis of the film Un Chien Andalou (Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali, 1929), perhaps the most well-known and influential film associated with the Surrealist art movement. After providing a brief introduction to the film, I examine the film's narrative conventions in the context of surrealist art conventions, paying close attention to the film's anti-narrative logic and dream logic.

Great video! I love the Breton quote. It seems perfectly in line with a bit he says in what I would call the "second act" of Nadja but of course that designation of narrative (or "anti-narrative" as you say!) is open to some interpretation. Anyway, he says, "...this system consists of never looking to see what's playing - which moreover would scarcely do me any good since I cannot remember the names of more than five or six actors - I obviously run the risk of missing more than others, though here I must confess my weakness for the most absolutely absurd French films. I understand, moreover, quite poorly, I *follow* too vaguely. Sometimes this does bother me, and then I question those sitting near me." Paraphrased a little but that's the gist. I would have absolutely loved to watch a movie (or bits of multiple) an afternoon with that gentleman! Haha.

Wow! Started the day off listening to Debaser by the Pixies, great song from 1989. Reading the lyrics I wanted to know what Chien Andalusia was, so I Googled it. That led me to the film Un Chien Andalou, didn't know what to think about that but only that I liked it. Lastly I stumbled across here, thanks for sharing your analysis. What a cool rabbit hole I stumbled into. Back to the music, Y'all have a great day.

that's awesome. thanks for sharing. i've often wanted to start an un chien andalou lesson with that song, but i'm never certain if my students will have heard it before.

@@filmandmediastudieschannel Well you can always start off with my story and how I found the movie. I just find it crazy that I've listened to this song for 30 years and only now has it lead me to the origin. I love how timeless music can be.

@@reesehuntiii3070 what's wild is that i knew of the film years before i knew the song, and it wasn't until fairly recently that I learned what the lyrics of the song actually were and i was shocked.
