Soy Kirsten. Estoy obteniendo mi doctorado en UC Berkeley en el departamento de biología. Mientras muchos de nosotros conocemos la ‘transferencia vertical’ - cuando un organismo recibe material genético de sus ancestros - a mi me gusta estudiar la transferencia horizontal: lo que sucede cuando los genes transmiten entre especies. Un ejemplo sería si una anguila eléctrica me donara sus genes, y, después, me podría electrocutar a las personas! Estudio la transferencia horizontal de genes entre bacteria a insectos, y cómo esto ayuda a los insectos a adaptarse a lo largo de la historia evolutiva. A mí me encanta usar la genética para investigar cómo la naturaleza se ha adaptado a casi todos los problemas imaginables, tal como los animales que pueden sobrevivir y prosperar en el frío extremo, la oscuridad total, y plantas tóxicas. En mi tiempo libre a mí me encanta bailar salsa y bachata y cuidar a mis plantas.
Por tercer año consecutivo, el Consulado General de México en San Francisco se asoció con Science at Cal de la Universidad de California, Berkeley para organizar el Día de la Ciencia, un evento que brinda a la comunidad de habla hispana la oportunidad de interactuar con científicos de varios disciplinas y les permite tener una experiencia más cercana con las actividades que realizan a diario. Este evento se llevó a cabo de manera virtual y contó con la participación de seis científicos de UC Berkeley.

I'm Kirsten. I am getting my Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in the biology department. While many of us are familiar with 'vertical transfer'-when an organism receives genetic material from its ancestors-I like to study horizontal transfer: what happens when genes pass between species. An example would be if an electric eel donated its genes to me, and then I could electrocute people! I study horizontal gene transfer from bacteria to insects, and how this helps insects adapt throughout evolutionary history. I love using genetics to investigate how nature has adapted to almost every problem imaginable, such as animals that can survive and thrive in extreme cold, total darkness, and toxic plants. In my free time I love to dance salsa and bachata and take care of my plants.
For the third consecutive year, the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco has partnered with Science at Cal of the University of California, Berkeley to organize "Día de la Ciencias," an event that gives the Spanish-speaking community the opportunity to interact with scientists from various disciplines, and allows them to have a closer experience with the activities they carry out on a daily basis. This event was held virtually and with the participation of six UC Berkeley scientists.
