Una furtiva lagrima" (A furtive tear) is the romanza from act 2, scene 3 of the Italian opera L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti......it is usually a male tenor piece, but this version by Mary is absolutely stunning...what a talent this beautiful singer is!

Lovely. I was blessed to see her on her abbreviated tour of 2003 while she sang her heart out in Chicago. Mary, whatever reach the biz of (sic) music gives you, keep using the great gift God gave you. Whether a few or bigger masses that you deserve. Loved ya then. Love ya now.

The beauty of the Mary Fahl phenomenon is that Mary can take any genre of any era and personalize it in such a way as to make it seem it was written uniquely for her. Who'd thought that an aria from a Donizetti opera would have been performed in such a superb manner. Purists may complain that the use of a plugged in voice and other instrument would be an inappropriate rendering of this art form. However, Mary is not concerned about such things; she reinvents any vocal art form and adapts and accommodates it to her unique expression of it. In this way Mary expands period specific music and extends it beyond the temporal elements that spawned it, adding a dimension of elegance and timelessness previous unknown. Mary Fahl that cadence at the end (in the words of the inimitable James Mercer of The Shins) made something bad in me go away. Bravo .... again and again!

I really can understand all this fuss about this performance.

20 years later I watch this. 40 feet away from her as she sang her heart out in Chicago bar. . Of course, she saved it for last. It was a delightful scream. What a dream.
