In this episode of the Canadian Podcast, Jeremy Evans shares his inspiring survival story that is set in the remote backcountry of the Canadian Rockies with ZAK.
In August 2017, 32-year-old Jeremy Evans endured multiple ferocious attacks by a protective female grizzly bear while hunting in the Alberta wilderness.
Jeremy’s injuries were massive, his scalp and face destroyed, an eye and his jaw dangling down. The tendons on one leg had been fully severed during the mauling. His hands were damaged where he had physically fought the bear. It was more than a dozen kilometres to where he had parked his truck in darkness early that morning and absolutely no one was near. Thoughts of his wife and their eight-month-old daughter consumed Jeremy as he stumbled and crawled for hours back to his truck, before driving himself several kilometres to a backcountry lodge for help. All the while, Jeremy thought of his young family and the upcoming sixth wedding anniversary that he feared he might never be able to celebrate.
Mauled carefully details what happened deep in an Alberta forest where few modern humans tread. Jeremy’s miraculous recovery and life lessons learned when so close to death show that human determination can defy the greatest of odds, and that setting small goals along the road to recovery can lead to remarkable achievements.
Despite the traumatic stress the encounter produced, Jeremy holds no animosity toward the bear and still enjoys spending time in the backcountry. To him the grizzly was doing what the best parents do: protect their young.

Jeremy has a story. I can imagine the story the bear tells other bears. "I fought this tall human and he messed me up. I messed him up but he really got me too." I can imagine the bears story about their battle to the other bears. Joking aside. But you are so courageous Jeremy. You are an inspiration. Im sorry you went through this. You are a survivor and bada**.

Joe Rogan should have you on the podcast and David Goggins really would like this story. I heard this on the first podcast I watched about you I was thinking the exact same thing before the guys even said it. Your bad ass and your surgery is awesome you would never know anything happened honestly I couldn't tell until you showed the scars and explained it.

Great story of survival. The scariest situation I have been in, I was photographing a momma griz and her cub when momma flushed an elk calf and took off down the mountain after it. The small cub didn't know which way mom went and the little fella was bawling and running back and forth, then ran straight towards me and my friend like it wanted us to protect it. It got within 10 yards and we were backing away yelling no, no. It finally took off down the hill in the direction of mom. A few minutes later, I caught something running out of the corner of my eye and it was that elk calf running right at us. It ran by so close I could have grabbed it, I knew momma griz wouldn't be far behind, sure enough he she came running with her nose to the ground like a bloodhound and ran right past us oblivious. The elk crossed the river and she finally gave up and called it a night. Everyone was lucky that evening.

Super tough guy post bear attack. That being said, lot of things were done wrong before and during the attack. 1. Your spray and gun are not easily accessible 2. Your gun is not loaded 3. You don’t have a radio 4. After the initial bear attack, you ran away which you shouldn’t do 5. After the 2nd bear attack, you chose to look at your phone camera rather than arm yourself once you had a moment to do so

Please explain: from your vehicle, it took you 6-7 hours to BIKE to your camp, but after you got mauled, you said you walked back to your truck in less than that? Im happy to hear you made it back alive with your family. The doctors did a good job, you look great. You should make a documentary to educate people.

I’m seeing that he’s lying. A doctor even told him she didn’t believe his story. The theory is that he tried to kill himself and survived, so he came up with the bear story to save face. But idk for sure, just what I’m seeing. There’s a lot of inconsistencies in his story, that’s for sure. But who knows

The one thing I learned from the movie Anchorman The Legend of Senõr Ron Burgundy is that if one is involved in a situation where they find themself face to face with a Grizzly or any bear for that matter is that one should hit them in the uvula! So says Mr. Burgundy! And 1 more important tidbit of information regarding bears is ......... "The bears can smell the menstruation!" - Brik Tamblyn from Anchorman 🐻 sniff sniff SNIFF *_SNIFF!!!_* 🩸🩸

Like what? I’ve heard him tell it on two different shows and it’s very consistent. A few things stuck out to me but related to time and distance estimations. No offense to Jeremy but it could just be that he, like me, is an idiot when it comes to all things mathematical, so maybe his estimates are just completely wrong and he innocently is unaware of it but to others maybe it stands out like an inconsistency, I feel like he seems very honest though, almost to the point where I feel he’s really downplaying a lot of it to seem tough, he has a tendency to joke about it, where a different personality might like to dwell on the actual horrors of it in detail, he has that macho type attitude some guys have where they downplay any injury etc

Or how he biked for 7 hours away from his truck but hiked back to it in a fraction of that time after being mauled by a bear… something doesn’t add up. A bunch of inconsistencies in his story. Funny. A doctor told him she didn’t believe his story and he got angry and told her to leave. So… idk. The theory I’m seeing on the internet is that he attempted to kill himself by jumping off a cliff and he survived, so he used the bear story to save face. But who knows.

Biking in at 3am is dangerous; cutting up a dead animal's body is dangerous; venturing into deep forest, means that your situational awareness is just 2 or 3 ft. in every direction, around you.

Well what are the other things that stuck out to you? As for his vision, well, I have a nephew wih somethit called septo optic diplasia and we don’t know exactly what he sees, he’s not blind but legally he is, but he somehow has a way of seeing things alright, like doesn’t walk into walls or doors, can see his video games well enough to play, but he doesn’t make eye contact, and he looks at things from the side, basic gist of it is that the brain makes up for deficiencies, it could be similar with Jeremy, remember you don’t need to see every detail in great clarity, mysekf I have poor eyesight and when I cross a road I couldn’t read license plates or see faces in cars but I can see well enough to cross safely. At night lights all glare with multiple halos, but I can still ride my bike safely because the details are largely irrelevant, big shapes and color contrasts are what matter more and that’s how he describes it

His eyes were hanging off, and pushed in the skull, he also described a time where he lost all sensation in his body and then when the bear moved him it suddenly all came back, so he could have had nerve damage to his eyes that made them work at times and not other times, I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion he’s lying when in fact he seems very legit and humble about it
