The rules state that they should continue playing so they overruled the arbiter and told them to continue playing, Inarkiev refused to do so and Carlsen won because of his refusal. Actually, Magnus won. That was the final decision. DETAILS: The initial arbiter at first awarded Inarkiev the win, but Carlsen alerted the chief arbiter, who overruled the first arbiter, and gave Inarkiev the option of resuming the game from the position arising after Carlsen’s 28.Kd3. Inarkiev refused to play and Carlsen was awarded the win. Inarkiev appealed the chief arbiter’s decision, but his claim was rejected by the appeal board and Carlsen’s win stood. MY OPINION: If we were to talk about blame, and “paying” for wrongdoing, then logically the first person to do something wrong should be the first person to pay for the wrongdoing. Whoever entered the first invalid move should be eliminated, because it can’t even be Magnus’s turn to move if Inarkiev hasn’t validly entered in a move yet. However, in a game of chess, illegal moves shouldn’t even be executable. If you play on a computer, the computer simply won’t allow you to make an illegal move. It’s not going to just LET you make it and then say you lost because of it. Illegal moves simply can’t be entered, because they aren’t even an option. And that is why the final Arbiter gave Inarkiev the option to continue the game from where it left off before the illegal move was made.

Wowwwww, the decision was overruled and the game was to be resumed from the last legal position. Inarkiev refused (because obviously he was losing), so the win was given to Magnus Carlsen. However, Inarkiev tried to file an appeal to amend the decision and give himself the win! This guy is really an "anything to win" kind of guy, isn't he? Unbelievable.

The arbiter can only look at the move he was called over for, and if Inarkiev's move was illegal then it would not have been Magnus's turn, and hence his move WAS illegal. The chief arbiter lately awarded Magnus the win, as Inarkiev made the illegal move first. He did offer them both the option to play from the castle check, but Inarkiev said no, basically resigning.

While you are in check, you have to move your king, nothing says when your opponent is in check, you have to do whatever. Carlson didn't even make an illegal move. If Carlson took the King, that might be an illegal move.

Not technically possible, it is possible. Lets just say the white king is on b5 and the black king is on d8. Then lets say blacks rook goes from c7 to b7, check. Then whites bishop goes from d4 to b6 eliminating the check and putting the black king in check. Basically this is possible when you block a check with a piece that puts the other king in check.

For anyone saying don't hate the player hate the game just because of a ruling, you're exactly the reason for participation trophies. This man literally cheated, and reported the other guy, it was a flat out set up, proof of this is in the fact that he refused to accept a draw game and then refused to complete the game, meaning this was his actual strategy, to trick and con and cheat and still lost. Don't be part of the problem, be better.

Yes, in the end, they did give him the win. They requested a rematch and the cheater refused and they therefore gave Carlsen the win-and Carlsen won the tournament as well.

I agree that continuing from the last legal move is the best, even illegal overtakes in F1 must be corrected immediately while still racing. But even if they hadn't reversed their decision, in worst case scenario for Carlsen it should still only be a draw because of 1:1 in illegal moves.

the arbiter wasnt present as the game was going, so when he arrived he for some reason agreed with inarkiev that carlsens move was illegal since both kings were in check. Finally the chief arbiter was called and he realised the mistake of the first arbiter. Inarkiev still wanted to appeal to the comittee but thankfully the appeal comitee agreed with the chief arbiter that Carlsen won this game.

Exactly my point too. By refusing to play, isn't he stating blatantly that his win, acquired through such a below-the-belt move, should stand?. To think a GM would stoop to such levels is beyond me. the result was switched, nearly immediately, the match was 3 years ago. Carlsen made no illegal move, moving simply while being in an illegal position is not illegal. Carlsen move to D1 would have been an illegal move and would have been an actual loss. KD3 is a 'legal move while in an illegal position', this is not illegal move, and so it is ruled as Carlsen win. Inarkiev choose to appeal game instead of finish it lul, thinking somehow a game over a thousand years old had loopholes in the rules.

New Rules Clarification I'm Submitting to the Committee. Let me know if you're willing to sign the petition. The harsher penalties are toward the end. :) 1. Illegal Move Claim - 2018 Clarification (a) If Player I claims an illegal move by Player C, not because Player C's move was illegal in and of itself, but only on the basis that an illegal position existed on the Board, and if that illegal Board position was caused by Player I himself, then Player I shall forfeit the game and Player C shall be declared the winner. The Chief Arbiter may, if he is in a particularly good mood, offer Player I the opportunity to return the game to the move immediately prior to Player I's initial illegal move and continue the game. Relevant clock adjustments shall be made to return the players to their relevant times prior to Player I's illegal move. (b) If Player I refuses to continue the game in good sportsmanship from the point of his illegal move on the basis that he was "in a losing position anyway," then the Chief Arbiter shall slap Player I on the wrist and declare Player C the winner. (c) If Player I still complains and whines about losing the game, notwithstanding Player I's illegal move and Player I's acknowledgement that he was in a losing position, the Chief Arbiter may, in the Chief Arbiter's discretion, ban Player I from the remainder of the tournament. (d) If, after all of the above in (a)-(c) and after the Chief Arbiter has patiently explained the basic principles of chess (including the incredibly obvious point known to every school child that you can't win a chess game if your king is in check) -- if after all of that Player I still complains and whines about losing the game and even brings an appeal to attempt to be declared the winner on the basis of some lame technical illegality in the board position that he himself caused, then in addition to banning Player I from the rest of the tournament the Chief Arbiter shall shred Player I's tournament entry form in full view of all other players present and Player I shall be promptly escorted from the premises. For all those wondering, the rook is trapped because the bishop on c1 can always move to f4 attacking the b8 square. Only way to "defend" this is Bd6 which can be captured immediately with the same threat.
