They recently closed our senior center to help the illegals, so I had gone 2 times I guess I dont know what to do with that meat, but what they had put in my box helped alot, and I don't think its right that they help the illegals over the vets, homeless, disabled and elderly, and for that reason I am voting in November for Donald Trump
I volunteer at a food pantry and people turn there noses up at that meat. I tell them to use it in recipes that are spicy like tacos. I like it and am happy for it.
ABSOLUTELY! Every canned item! I clean my drink cans as well! Back when I drank soft drinks I got one out of the machine with dip spit on it 🤢 haven't recovered yet 🙈 I live in the country so I also wash my utensils & pots & pans before using them! 😬
We were poor and we did get what back then was called Commodities. My mom could take anything and make it a feast, with a little imagination My friend Joe used to make a yummy green chili with the pork! I wish we would have known back then about washing it! because it is so salty. The thing is we think of ourselves as entitled in this Nation we forget to be grateful I am so grateful that for right now and this minute I am safe, free, I have a roof over my head and a warm bed to sleep in My heart breaks for the people who just underwent the devastating tornadoes in Kentucky! I bet they are in shelters with government-issued food right now and Thank God for it too!
Every once in a while my neighbor will give me a can of the beef. I add onion, frozen mixed vegetables, cabbage, a can of diced tomatoes, celery flakes, parsley and some garlic. So good 😋
Many years ago ,my mom use to get what was called surplus food times were tough and she was a single parent...but that food was delicious, and thank goodness my mother knew how to cook with it and she loved to bake ,nothing was wasted,,..
Tallow is the correct name for it. please stop apologizing, I follow you everyday your one of my favorite people on you tube . I get food from the food bank every month keep the videos coming from the food banks it helps me figure out what to do with some of the stuff I get. thank you for reading ,
I'm afraid some Americans are spoiled and would turn up their nose. America has more hungry people than most think. People need to get use to eating more plain, I'm afraid we might have hard times coming. We need people that know how to stretch a dollar, and cook good value meals to teach those that can't. Thank you Tessa for trying to help.
I'm not a picky eater, I try to eat healthy and I'm very frugal. I grew up in a health conscious household, my mother owned a health food store for almost 20 years before she sold it and retired. For those people that think this sort of thing isn't heathy, here are the ingredients: BEEF, SALT. I'm looking at a can of "Lakeside Beef with Juices" right now.
@@earlwright9715 I agree things are far worse now than just two years ago when inflation was 9%. My light bill has tripled, car insurance way up..we had to quit driving our second car, and you know the prices of food and household items. I don't know how much more we can stand. I'm 67, hubby 73 living on social security. I'm having to work also just to survive.
Hi Tessie, you're helping many people by showing this video. I grew up very poor and remember hunger during my youth. This would have been very welcomed at my table back then. Being creative in the kitchen certainly helps turn something that's mediocre into something that as you say is more palatable. Great job! God bless.
Loved your comment about Southerners and throwing away 'fat'. I'm from the Deep South...personally, the Beef fat belongs in the trash. However, might be fight over the Bacon fats!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 👍👍😎💖💖
If people get hungry enough, they will eat it! Too many spoiled people. We need to learn to be humble and thankful for our foods. Thank you for the tips! If I ever find any of this meat, I will now know how to deal with the excess fat.
You are so right Tessie. I was given some of this meat from a friend who said they wouldn’t eat it. I really like the pork. It makes great pulled pork sandwiches! Growing up my grandmother would get Government issued commodities. She was VERY thankful to get them because she was very poor. She could make any of it taste like a gourmet meal on her old cast iron wood cookstove. She would also plant her dried beans she was given and have a bumper crop of fresh beans. She was very smart and thrifty!!!
Have been eating canned meat for years. My children loved it. God has blessed us with so much. Always thankful for our food and staying warm and comfortable. God bless you Tessie, love your videos. So helpful!!
I grew up all that stuff and I love the beef and the pork, what I do with it, I don't wash mine off, I just go ahead and throw it in the PAN, melt all the grease off of it. And then add barbecue sauce to it and make sloppy Joes out of it or something like this. It's really good adds. Ome garlic to it, salt and pepper. It's great. I loved never had the canned chicken. The beef and the pork I have had several times😊
As a child, my mom would occasionally receive commodities. The meat was not labled. So we called it mystery meat. Mom would open a csn and then plsn a meal around that. Sometimes a 5 pound brick of cheese was included. The meals she could come up with were amazing!
We didn't get commodities, but my grandma did, and an aunt. I learned to eat powdered eggs , by fixing them like scrambled eggs and adding a bit of bacon grease to them. Powdered milk is fine to cook with. The peanut butter and cheese are awesome. We sliced the canned pork, dredged it in flour and fried it. Its good with eggs, and can make a pretty good sandwich. We were taught not to waste and to be grateful for whatever we had.
We got it I'm 54 . And I never knew the difference. Powdered milk was made half n half with the regular milk from the store . My sister called it special milk and the kids loved it ❤️ . I would be ever so grateful if I could get some
As a child we went to a place my parents referred to as the County Poor Farm and receive canned meat, cheese and powdered eggs . Possibly more,I was very young. My mom was very creative and made delicious meals . I am so happy I paid attention 😊
My Mom used to bring home a bunch of government (welfare cheese) and stuff. But.... The long block of cheese.... YUMMY!!!! I really liked grilled cheese sandwiches with it.
I’d try it! As the daughter of a rancher, it may be a little hard for me to stomach- but I also know that home canned stew meat looks absolutely scary… but it is amazing!!! So, yes! I’d try it.
Thank you Tessie for this video I always had a hard time getting this meat to taste like " regular" food. I am on a limited budget and am grateful for this food. Please keep informing us many of us need this information.
I grew up on this stuff but unfortunately, my mother didn’t know how to cook it! I remember one night for supper, she just plopped in onto a plate on the table! I think she might have been angry about something, but I never asked. After I got married, I had this several times over the years when it was given to me and as I recall, there was a recipe on the can on how to serve it. I followed the recipe on the pork can, and it was very good!
You can buy ground beef, hamburger, chicken and ham like that. But you got a deal 👍 for that price. Great deal. If not canning your own a good way to buy and use. No refrigerator required and easy to make meals from. ❤️
Hey Tessie many years ago(I am 68) we got govt.issue food and the canned meat was very much like Spam.My mom would cube it and fry it with peppers and pineapple (canned) and soy sauce. It was delicious. The govt also gave away great cheese and peanut butter. She would serve her dish over rice.
The pork makes the best barbecue sandwich. Got some years and years ago when hubby was out of work. YOU do need to heat it some to drain the juice off.
We usually put the pork or beef in a steamer basket and steam it for awhile to get rid of a good amount of the fat, then use it however we want. The pork is great with homemade taco seasoning and crisped up in a pan or the oven like carnitas and the beef we use in sauce like this or as stroganoff. It’s great!
I remember growing up my Parents got the cheese, peanut butter, pork, powdered eggs, they were very good and powdered milk,Mom's gravy using it was deliscious,i've never heard of the beef or chicken.
Yes I would eat and have eaten canned government meat, cheese, peanut butter etc. my grandmother received commodities and she shared with us when I was a child. We always looked forward to receiving the cheese especially.
I canned some ground beef. I discovered that if I cooked it first, it kept a bit more consistency doing it dry canned when partially cooked than raw packed. The raw pack does have an alpo consistency. I decded I would can about 20 pounds for tacos and sloppy joes in case the price rose too high for me to buy fresh.
Parents used to get it. Loved it . just a while ago hubbys dad gave us a few cans said he’d never use it . I made cottage pie with it and took some over to them they loved it .
Also use tallow for homemade soap, along with woodash and rain water. Bless us O Lord In these thy gifts Which we are about to receive Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I did not grow up on this but I have some of those brands from the food pantry. I have no problem with the food or taste. I appreciate the suggestion of rinsing off the meat after getting the extra fat out. I use it in casseroles or sauce all the time. I have small cans of Crider solid white chicken meat and find it very tasty and versatile. I also have canned raw pack chicken as well as breast chunks. When I found an exceptional buy on ground beef I ended up canning 12 cans of ground beef. Slightly sauteed it before hot packing it so this ground beef will stay separated. You have been so helpful in all that you share!
I've never had access to the government supplemental meat/cheese products, Tessie, but I can believe that the quality would be good because there are bound to be quite a few quality-control regulations involved. (At least that was the case in health care when Medicare was supplying funding for some types of home care and nursing home care in my career. There were lots of rules and there were government inspectors who visited to make sure they were carried out!) I wouldn't hesitate to try these products. After all, if we knew what we were eating in some fast food (and slow food) restaurants, we might be surprised! Others have mentioned these options, but besides spaghetti sauce, this looks like it would make really good tacos, tamales, lasagna, chili, stuffed cabbage and sauce for chili dogs. When there's a hungry family to feed, those options would be pretty popular in many households. I can imagine a grilled government cheese sandwich along with a bowl of chili on a cold day. Yummy!
I have eaten government issued, and it is better that eating cardboard or styrofoam. My only question IS...if it is true government food, why is it being sold? I think the ideas you shared on what to do with this stuff are amazing! I was born in Maine, and by the grace of God, I live in SC now. If it wasn't for for this stuff back in the 1960's and 70's, we would have starved. The US is way too picky, and are a very wasteful country. GREAT VIDEO!!!! ❤️👍🏻🙏😍
Yes I was raised on this meat my mother use to put the pork in spaghetti sauce as well my daughter is 21 and she still talks about how good it was. I receive those can now and I make pork tacos, beef and gravy with rice and veggies, BBQ pulled pork it works. Creativity is key and some cook time in great seasoning will make a big difference...Thanks for the memories ❤️
Put it in the fridge, after one day the fat has set and can just be dipped right off. Then rinse in warm water, pat dry with paper towel! My Grandma use to get commodites, and I knew people who would pay "big" money for the cheese they gave. It was really good, my Grandma would be so upset because people would sell the cheese and their children needed it! Blessings
I remember people giving this away because they said it tasted bad my folks would gladly take and my mom would cook some really good meals!❤ great video Tessie.
When i was little i remember my mom getting commodities. It was government issued meat, peanut butter, rice and cheese. I dont remember the ground beef, but i do remember the pork and chicken. We would get one slice of pork and all the vegetables we could eat! My mom had a HUGE garden. I also remember mom mixing the oil in the peanut butter....lol. The cheese was the best!!
I buy this meat as there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. With the ground beef I make poor man beef-n-noodles, with the pork I make Shredded BBQ sandwiches, and with the chicken I make Shredded chicken sandwiches. All these make wonderful casserole dishes too.
Thank you Tessie for another good video! I grew up with the government food and was very excited about receiving it. My mother must have known how to cook the meat because I always thought it had a lot of flavor! ❤️
hello again Tessie👋🏼👋🏼I help at our local food truck and have used this meat many times. Just a couple days ago I made a casserole with it. I sauté onions and garlic in butter then add the meat along with some spices and heat it up then dump a can of peas and thicken the sauce. We love it over pasta noodles with grated cheese over the top. YUM YUM
I bought a bunch of Keystone canned meat when the pandemic started. I have not tried any yet. If it is anything like what you showed, I will be doing just what you said to do. Thanks.
Budget tip! Warm it up for a few minutes in a pan. Pour the fat off into a small bowl and once it has cooled you have a fat source to use for frying other meals later on in the week. Then add to your sauce, or season as desired. The fat is also delicious on a slice of bread, seasoned with salt. An old timey snack called "bread n dripping."
I used to know this lady that collected all the chicken skins and make oil or fat chicken butter. She would cook, bake, make breakfast eggs, muffins etc. .. But never throw away the chicken butter away(skins). She had bad spider veins all over her body, mostly on her legs (except her face) I attributed all that to eating chicken fat butter.
I've heard than term used before also. It referred to tough chunks of inedible parts of meat that you could not eat: usually white muscle or cartilage.
Our local Dollar Tree sells the Crider products in smaller cans. Why would people in the south not like you saying not to eat the fat off of that meat? 🤔 That meat is like the Keystone that so many preppers stock up on. Cheaper on their website though than resale online stores. Tfs! Blessings!
Tessie you look so pretty today. Thanks for sharing about the canned meat. I had never seen it or heard of it. If I do have the occasion to find it somewhere in a discount grocery, I won’t be afraid to try it because of your tips.
I use it all the time..I've used the beef for many things, the pork makes an awesome BBQ pork..and as far as the fat I use a little bit of it I think it gives lots of flavor
I have to draw the line sometimes. I have health conditions and the reason I spend so much on organic food. I get sick otherwise. Be safe folks. 🙏. I don't mean to criticize sister. I understand folks are in tough spots and am thankful I am blessed at the moment.
Thank you for showing me what to do with these items!! I have several cans on hand but had no idea what to do with it. I have a lot of ground pork and not sure what to do with that?
I actually do the same thing as with the beef chili spaghetti sloppy joes if it doesn't taste beefy enough for you add a little beef base or beef bouillon to it but watch it that's very salty
We always liked it. Other people would give it to us because they didn't like it so we would cook it up and eat it. The pork makes a great bar b que sandwich and the hamburger makes a good Sheppards pie.
I just made tacos with that meat. Make pulled pork out of the pork, and chicken salad out of the chicken. We rejoice when we go to a food distribution and they have any of this meat. The fact that it is canned makes it even better knowing that it won’t go bad so quick. Love the fact you can put it on a shelf without refrigeration. It takes a little work to make it more palatable, but it is very healthy, and fills our bellies. I would much rather have a block of government cheese, than Velveeta.
Testing, this was amazing. I've gotten this before...rinsed it! And tried using it for tacos..it worked..ish. Didn't waste it regardless but it is so good if you to show folks ways of using these types of foods. I've got several cans of the beef and pork my husband bought for our stick and no clue what to do. More of these please!!!👏👏
I just found this government version 😳 At my 99 cent only store and it was $1.99. Rung up as $2. I quickly bought 5 cans of ground pork. That's all that was available. But canned meats are significantly more expensive. So this goes into my emergency long term stockpile.
I still get these in my senior boxes. You did it right. Also, people better know this is what's in the national defense stockpiles. This is a very valuable resource video for the future.
Having gone through tough times, my family is grateful for canned meats, of any sort. A great source of protein and there are so many recipes online to prepare it. Thanks for sharing Tessie.
We call it Commodity meats. You can use the hamburger in a number of dishes, including sloppy Joes, soup, and hamburger helper. Pork for bbq sandwhiches, and soup. Canned chicken, in chicken salad and soups. I personally am not a fan of it, but will eat it occasionally. (I have food texture issues) You are correct, it is grisley meat. Often the discarded meats are used in canned meats, hotdogs and lunch meats. Removing the fat, and rinsing it does help with flavor, plus it removes the saltiness! One thing about most meats is they are versatile. Canned meats can be used in a variety of casserole type meals also.
Tessie,I have some of those in need and pork.I have a lot of it because never knew what it how to use it so this video was great one for me.I will have to try that spaghetti.guess hamburger helper would work to.thank you for this information.have a good night.love and hugs.see tomorrow
My mom referred to chewy, fatty bits in the meat as gristle. My maternal side is Pa. Dutch and they had dairy farms in Lancaster. I think that's part of why I love watching you so much, a lot of what you talk about is familiar & comforting to me!
I'd eat it! We have cans of roast beef, ham, corned beef, spam, crab, tuna, chicken, pork and probably more lol Yes, we bought them... BUT that's only because we didn't want to use the food pantry unless we really really need to. So, we've put up a few cans at a time. We're, by no means, "ahead" in life financially... We know, there may come a day where we'll have no other choice but to humbly ask for help by a food bank. We've been there before and absolutely may be there again. There is no shame in feeding your family the best you can. I feel, personally, that there may be some shame in turning ones nose up to perfectly good food instead of trying to work with it. Like you said, Tessie, do a little research on it. People would be surprised to find all the materials out there on canned food. All my love 💙 and may God bless us all 💙
Thought you'd like this recipe for your ladies 🐔 Ingredients: 3 cups rendered grassfed tallow. 2 cups Chicken scratch or mixed bird seed. 1 cup dry corn. In a saucepan, melt tallow on low heat. Once it is liquid, mix in corn and scratch. Fold together until well blended and all seeds/kernels are coated in tallow. Press mixture into a silicone muffin pan. Work quickly before it hardens. They would LOVE to have a treat 😍
Yes, I remember the big cheese blocks and powdered eggs in big containers long ago. My mother was a genius at making any kind of food seem like a treat!
So I got the canned beef one from a food giveaway that we call commodities here.. The texture when it came out of the can was weird. This was my first time having it. well what I did is I put it in slow cooker with barbecue sauce and I made beef barbecues and I put them on buns and it was really good
