The snorkeling was amazing at Hanauma Bay in Oahu, Hawaii! We even saw what looked like a tornado of fish! Snorkeling there is a must do if you are in the area. So many pretty fish! #hanaumabay #oahuhawaii #hawaii #snorkeling
hey Chris, a magical place indeed! tons of turtles, a beautiful school of fish, of different species and colors, a stunning beach, and clear water. I like your description " a tornado of fish"😀 have a great day!
Thanks for visiting...and for making it to the tornado of fish! I just checked out your channel and we were already thinking about going to Portugal. Good stuff! Look for a new sub shortly.
Great video.. it brings back great memories.. i was there in 1982 and 1984 as an older child (10-12yo) and i still remember the experience.. it was amazing.. i'm glad it's still there.
I love snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. On the beach side of the reef it is a great place for novice and starter snorkelers (roughly 4 ft depth). On the other other side of the reef I would recommend only those who are least SOLID INTERMEDIATE and a strong swimmer as well. This is because suddenly beyond the reef the depth increases dramatically (just ten yards beyond the reef depth appears to be about 20 ft) and there is a set of currents out in the larger area which can carry you toward the mouth of the bay and thus the open ocean, and the "Maui Express"(swimmers and others have been lost in this strong inter island current0, so you need to be solid and have good judgement once you take on the larger cone area. You have to remember it does take WORK to get back to shore. [this whole bay is a volcanic cinder cone, now filled with ocean, wildlife and corral]. There is a thing called "Toilet Bowl" just out beyond the northern side of this bay, it's also potentially dangerous, this is a lava tube type formation, and thus better for those with good sense and strong swimming skill. The locals seem all to know this stuff. All that being said, this is a fantastic snorkeling area, with many opportunities to see ample sea life and to explore reef area, learn to snorkel, and plenty of area to explore once you get good.
Thanks for the great comment and info! I totally agree that you should be a strong or very decent swimmer if you go to the other side of the reef. We saw the signs and were quite cautious. We did get into a bit of current. I would definitely not go out there without a decent set of snorkeling/scuba fins. You can rent gear there, but we brought all of our own since we also scuba dive a lot. Our fins are quite large, but that may not even have been enough for some of the areas you are describing like the Toilet Bowl. Really good info. I hope everyone reads your comments before going there, but yes it is very safe on the beach side of the reef. It truly is a magical place. I would like to go ever further out next time, but will definitely do more research first. Thanks again!
That was beautiful!! What camera did you use? Can you also share video settings like White Balance etc while filming underwater that may have helped you for such clear and blue looking water? Thanks in advance!
Well it certainly helped that the water there was so clear. I only use GoPros underwater although other action cameras might work as well. I believe I filmed this one with a GoPro 9 and my more recent videos with a GoPro 11/12. Some people say to shoot at 4Kx30 to get more light, but I always shoot at 4Kx60 and it turns out way better. 4Kx30 may work better where you need longer shutter speeds at deeper depths, but 4Kx60 is good for snorkeling. I turn sharpness to medium, turn color to flat (then color grade in DaVinci Resolve). I use Horizon Leveling and that's about it. I don't touch many of the other settings and just use Auto White Balance. Hope that helps! Good luck and let me know if you have other questions.
The sad thing is that it doesn't look the same anymore. It has been beat down by tourists trampling on the coral, and it looks mostly dead, compared to when I last saw it. Locals can confirm this. Nevertheless, it is still nice.
I noticed trampled coral as well. And soon all the coral may be white from bleaching :( We did have a lot more luck going past the first barrier of rocks/coral into the deeper parts. You can't stand on the coral there (which is good), but you can still see it really well. Most tourists don't go out that far. If they do, they already usually know to take care of the coral. Also, much bigger fish just past the signs that mention currents. You have to be careful, but we didn't have any issues other than a small rip current. I definitely want to go back someday, so I hope it doesn't get too torn up.
I was last there several years ago and it already looked diff from when I was there years before that. I saw tourist standing on coral. Some guy had to be saved, he swam past the buoys. Tourist pretty much doing everything they're told not to do in the video that you have to watch before entering.
Wow, what a great snorkeling spot for the first time! I agree, I love filming underwater, but there is no substitute for experiencing it yourself. It's another world underwater. Scuba can be even more amazing. Thank you for your comment.
Sorry just seeing this. I detailed some settings I use in another comment, but I use a GoPro 11. Any GoPro after 9 will probably give you good results though.
Oh, sorry to hear that! I hate when you travel half way around the world to see something and it's closed. Sounds like other people have had problems, too. It can be hard to get tickets even when they are open. Well, hopefully you get another chance someday. Once you finally get in and get past all the people it really is a gem.
Wow awesome so much beautiful view from your video I'm very enjoyable to watching your video thanks you so much for your sharing please have a good day from Angkor Wat temple ❤❤

Wow, I just watched this snorkeling at Hanauma Bay in Oahu, Hawaii, and it's absolutely mind-blowing! The water is so clear and inviting, and the coral reefs are bursting with vibrant colors. It's like stepping into an underwater wonderland! The variety of fish and marine life is incredible, swimming right alongside you as you explore the bay. I can only imagine the thrill of snorkeling in such a breathtaking location. Hanauma Bay in Oahu is definitely going on my bucket list for snorkeling destinations. Looking forward to the next ones.
Thank you for the wonderful comment! The water was super clear and so many different fish in such a small area. You will definitely want to visit. I just checked out your channel. It is great! Thanks for visiting.
Ugh sorry to hear that. We did read this place fills up super fast. We went very early in the morning just in case. They should probably have a better system. Thanks for the comment. That will help other people plan accordingly.
wife and I got the chance to visit here on our Honeymoon back in 2018. Never got any underwater pictures while we were snorkeling, so it's nice to see this footage and reminisce on how incredible it was. Just a magical experience, like you're in another world! Fish everywhere you look! I remember the coral bits were quite sharp and could hurt your feet, which is why the staff mentioned to avoid those spots
Great place for a honeymoon! It truly is a magical place. We've snorkeled in many places around the world and this is still one of my favorite. So many fish just like you said. Glad we could bring back some good memories. Thanks for the great comment! Take care.
Thank you! Yes, I did use a GoPro for this footage. I believe that was a GoPro 7 at the time, but now I use a 9 and an 11. GoPro 7 has good stabilization, but starting with the 9 it added horizon leveling as well. Most GoPro's can go 33 feet w/o underwater housing so you would not need it here, but I do use the housing when we scuba dive. I'll have a video our very soon diving with turtles where I did use the housing. Hope that helps and thanks for visiting!
Wow, so many fish! Your videos are really clear. Thanks for sharing! I didn't get to go here because it was too hard to get a spot, and I gave up. But I had great snorkeling in Maui! There's only one type of fish you have here that I haven't seen, the brown and white patterned one.
Sorry you didn't get to go here. I know it gets incredibly busy. We got there very early in the morning just in case. I would love to snorkel in Maui! We also had not seen the brown and white patterned one before. We are used to diving in the Caribbean so it was nice to see different types of fish. Thanks for watching!
Hey Nick! Good to hear from you. Yeah, that was an epic day. I'll have scuba diving in Turtle Bay out soon. So many turtles! Make sure to check out some of our snorkeling and diving videos in Culebra, Puerto Rico if you haven't already. That place was amazing! Hope you are doing well.
@@ChrisChrisman Thanks, I'm doing well! Looking forward to the Turtle Bay video, I have been snorkeling there but not done scuba. I will check out the other videos as well.

Oh, that's great! Isn't it wonderful there? Sooo many fish in such a small area and so many different kinds. We saw lots of the bigger fish just right past the big coral mound/rocks in the middle. I can't wait to go back!
