As a owner of 3 classic Mercedes 115, w123, and E55 I wish there were a register of certified classic Mercedes shops listed in different states and cities for classic car owners, even though I work on my own it would be nice to have a trusted source for more complicated repairs.

I disagree. In the interest of fairness you should tell the customers that come in for major work that they may need to pay for redundant hours of additional work is discovered during the work. You didn't tell the customer to buy the car and you didn't offer a warranty on the car. You don't need to be generous with the money, but you can be generous with efficient work and advice. And you should do progress based billing so you're not waiting until the project is completed.

I appreciate the honesty and your work ethic. I take my 129 to my mechanic who I've known for 20yrs. He's not a benz specialist but his honesty and transparency is unbeatable. I would never give my money to someone who is untrustworthy and greedy.

When I started in 1981 in a foreign car shop we always did a compression test before we adjusted the valves tune-up. Probably should do a compression test and a leak down test on all the old ones first.

You are unlikely to hear a breakdown like this from many mechanics. I appreciate this insight and its give and take in my opinion. When you have a fair and honest mechanic you trust their assessment and recommend them to "good people". "Good people" meaning other people, who pay on time and don't complain about needed maintenance....

I agree with you Pierre. I had a business for 30 years and I couldn’t always justify charging for all the hours I worked on people’s projects. If I was smart I would have turned away jobs with lower profit. I had a clientele and I had to take care of my customers, if I wanted repeat work. It boils down to the kinda person you are. Kudos to you!

An honest mechanic is a very rare find. I’ve used a few unscrupulous mechanics who were usually also incompetent, and I have been fortunate to find a couple of ethical mechanics who have also been the most competent and efficient. Pierre is in the rare second group. If “Catholic guilt” is correlative with honesty and competency, then what is the animating force behind the others?

Great video. As a professional in a different area I know very well about unbillable hours. Sometimes they give back in the long run with client loyalty and gratitude, sometimes they don't, but I myself want to be honest about my work and if that means I have to put unbillable time to achieve the results I am confortable with, so be it.

Wow I did not know the labor rate was up to $200/hr ! I was shocked when I saw labor rates re. ach $100/hr. Man I am getting old.

You give your customers great value, Pierre. Your reasoning is sound. Just stand up for yourself and the time you can't recoup. That's time that, especially as your child grows, you will wish you had back. Your time is yours solely.. You don't owe your life to anyone. You're a great human. Stop the Catholic guilt!!!!

This was kind of a long winded video about the importance of building value in the service that you offer. If your customer doesn't believe they are getting what they are paying for, they won't return. It doesn't matter how good you are at providing that service.
