That little leather patch on the sabre is a common feature of European military Sabres. It usually serves the purpose of hiding the transition between the guard and the blade. That is aesthetically "necessary" Because most military Sabres (unlike medieval swords) didn't have a recess in the guard in which the blade sits. They would just have squared off shoulders, and depending on the fit there could be a pretty substantial gap. I for example own a Spanish sabre, with a really big and unsightly gap between the guard and the blade. It obviously once had a leather patch to hide that, but no longer had. So I just made a new one, and now you aren't able to tell that the gap exists. Usually it is supposed to have a very tight fit, and is often glued on to the guard additionally to prevent it slipping off.
+Medieval Review It also prevents water from getting into the scabbard if you are out in the rain. That thumb ring is strange. With sabers, usually a saber grip is used which has the thumb on the back of the back strap on the grip although sometimes a 3/4 grip is used, but I have never heard of using a full hammer grip on a saber especially if it is a light blade. We both learned something new. Love your videos...keep them coming.
Be carefull with Winged Hussar armor. Nearly all replicas including the ones in museums are historically inaccurate based on a 19th century painting. Also they didnt wear wings on their back. They attached a single wing to the saddle.
That little leather disc is actually meant to help keep moisture out of the scabbard when the blade is sheathed. Yes, mostly for storage, but I would suggest keeping it on the blade all the time. Honestly, I'm rather surprised that they included that. I have owned quite a few replica swords and never seen that. The only reason I know what it is for is an antique Japanese Cavalry Sabre that I own.
Maybe it's too late to warn ya but beware smashing that CS thermoplastic brown stick head on something hard. It's brittle plastic and pieces will fly off. I used to sell CS online. Also the brown is just a cheap coating and will chip and crack. I make light and heavy custom walking sticks now and know the science. Maybe send ya one to evaluate sometime. EDIT: Be glad for the extra grease. The manufacturer has no idea how long that will sit on the shelf before it's sold, and if you bought say 50 of them for your future horsed saber unit you might just leave them in storage that way. And the thumb ring is cut for leather gloves
I'm no expert, but I think generally sabers ( primarily cavalry sabers ) tended to not be as sharp along the edge, but extremely sharp at the point. I own a legit French cavalry saber ( my Father purchased it in France when we lived there ages ago). It has all the identifiers, serial number, place it was forged, etc engraved or stamped into the back of the blade. It is not the sharpest along the edge, but the point is ridiculously sharp. One of my prized possessions.
The leather piece is suppose to remain on the saber at all times. It's to protect the handle from the sheath from cutting into it when sheathing your sword. I lost the one that goes onto my grandfather's dress sword, and the scabbard cut into the handle a little bit.
You may find it a good idea to purchase a ZGB Ivan head. I know you're not big on the "zombie" thing, but they are a damn good approximation of a human head.
+mrwoodchuck94 Well they're Cold Steel!!! Toughest and sharpest motherfuckers in the world!! To not dye them black wouldn't be cool enough for them I guess.
They don't coat everything black and guess what most maces on the market today are black in order to look like the iron used in the old days and the maces of old were generally black as well because they were made of iron or painted such way to protect from rust and to plain look as menacing as possible.
I have two of their older swords the 1796 light cavalry sword (Which is anything but light on the wrist and a real chopper) and what they called the Horseman's Basket Hilt sword which is out of production, it's actually a Schiavona style sword and must say both are the real thing and battle worthy and I collect swords (real swords not wall hangers), I also have their earlier mace and war hammer as well, the earlier mace is plain and comes with a wood handle and flanges and it will crush what ever it comes into contact with, believe me I hit a few things with it and if you like war hammers you have to get the war hammer they make, one of the best out there. As for that CINQUEDEA you don't need a razor edge on that thing not with that blade tapering down to a point like that, parry and stab stab stab. Also have both of their Viking axes as well, awesome pieces indeed and call to the Norse in me big time, one thing though the handle on war hammer and small viking ax are kind of thin, get some tennis handle wrap (brown in my case) or leather and wrap them where you are going have your hands for a better and more solid grip.
I would really enjoy you doing a review of the Polish Calvary. While you are not an expert, a brief introduction into what you have found would be pretty cool. I feel it would add depth, for me as a viewer, to the collection you are starting with the Polish Calvary.
I'm polish and pround. I want a polish saber too. And no one can deny the polish hussars were the best cavalry at the time in europe if not in the world.
I'd love to see more non-sword weapon reviews! As much as I love swords I have a soft spot in my heart for polearms. I think you mentioned having a Bec de Corbin or a Lucerne Hammer (six and two threes) in one of your videos but I haven't seen it, do you have a video on it?
If you think the cold steel gladius machete is useless, than you are not very sensible lol. That machete is FAR stronger than any gladius that would have been used originally in roman legions. Just cause it has a poly handle and a thin blade doesnt make it useless lol it would make a fantastic weapon
If I saw it correctly, in your armory, you also have Coldsteel War Hammer. And apart from making videos reviewing these items, please do not forget to make a video reviewing the cats. LOL!
+ศานต์ไท หุ่นพยนต์ Orange Tabby: About ten pounds, 2 ounces, more weighted towards the back end. Aesthetics: Stripes and swirls adorn the coat with a white bib. Functionality: claws sharper than the Windlass sword I last unboxed, coupled with highly attuned reflexes make for a very effective mouse-slayer. Overall, I give 4 out of 5 tails.
Do you think the brass adornments on the saber are meant to be blank, or do you think they are meant to be engraved, such as having the initials of the owner on it, or a black-leaf pattern. If so, would you plan on having them engraved?
The ring should be much smaller it was only polish thing came out from uniq fighting technic we had eastern and western mix so cold cros cut technic not all saber had it some swordsman had simply iron or silver ring on that finger it was mainly to protect hend however it alowd some surprise moves and more control of blade sorry for my gramma english is not my first language
I just asked for this video on another one of your videos. Thanks so much for your reviews. I like my Cold Steel MAA arming sword, but I'm sure if I invest in an Albion, I might end up hating it. Anyway, if you have the heart to review it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on their men at arms arming sword. Keep up the great work!
+Medieval Review I can imagine. I got a lot of info just from watching this. My sword came slathered in grease as well, so, whenever you do a review on any of their stuff, I'll be paying close attention, as it likely will carry closely across their new line. Thanks for the quick reply!
first off Hussar is a Hungarian word and the polish adapted it for their cavalry but make no mistake hussars are Hungarian. and there were no hussars until the Hungarians. the polish did not create the word nor the warriors them selves.
I was honestly torn, today, between the Battlecry Agincourt sword and the Cold steel Polish saber... I ended up with the agincourt sword because my fiance liked it better......but i still want that saber D:
at 6 minutes, big ol black box. Prediction: Polish sabre. Must be the polish sabre. 10 minute edit. Yuuuuup. Also, richard marsdens book? Handle looks a bit oversized, compared to the originals I have / have handled. The leather tab is common on sabres (military and polish/otherwise) just to protect the steel from the scabbard (scratching etc). How's the distal taper.
yup Marsdens book. finished it a few days ago. I'll be reviewing it. distal taper begins about half way down the length of the blade. it's a subtle transition but the weak of the blade maintains it's thickness for a bit.
+Medieval Review If I ever decide to become a reviewer, I'm gonna keep it in mind. But man, I'd like my beard to grow GLORIOUS instead of lame and messy and itchy... (gotta shave, now that I think about it)
I keep gaining them, I'm happy so far. I certainly get a lot more when my vids are shared, but tat the same time I don't really stress out about it too much. It's awesome to have over 5k people following me.
I wonder when will you realise your feline overlords have trained you so well and make you supply them with so many boxes :) Great review, almost made me like Cold Steel :)
Can anyone help me out? my parents bought a sword for my graduation present but I can't find any info about it. The guy they got it from said that it was rare and from Okinawa. I can't find anything about it. Any help is welcomed. Thank you.
This appears to be someone's slightly different take on the Highlander Katana: Dragon handled katana. Variations of this general design are out there is all sorts of forms. I can't say I recognize this one specifically. But it is highly likely to be a decorative piece, not a functional one; possibly made from high carbon steel, but more likely made from stainless steel.
Blades rust due to no oil, don't clean without oiling it John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. Repent and believe the gospel, trust in the only begotten Son of God, the savior of all mankind deny thyself and take up your cross follow Christ learn of him and believe. The gospel of what God sent his son into the world to do, to die fir the sins of all that all might have life, repent and trust in the Lord YHWH
sabre looks like crap. Sorry tos ay, but you have wasted your money. I have messaged you on facebook, providing names of soem of the best sabre smiths from Poland. You should have ordered a sabre from one of those guys instead of this mass produced crap. It's just so much nicer to have something of high quality, even if you have to give up on buying few extra things to save some money. I mean come on, tis not even properly designed. This huge gap betwen the knuckle guard and the handle... Wtf is that?
The shillelagh is crap. Cold Steel should be ashamed to sell this rubbish, i got some real good knives off them but this is junk. I have one and it is made of plastic and way too thick and heavy. It doesn't even look like a real one and there is no balance in it. I was very disappointed and i hope the rest of the stuff you got is a better quality than this poor-made, cheap plastic piece of plastic. That is why it is in the box, heavy, big and cheap, not a shillelagh, a spiked club at best.
