My step mom always told me to keep playing cards on you when you're walking in the woods. If you get lost, sit down and start playing solitaire and someone will come along and tell you what move you just missed.

I would definitely include a copy of "Pocket Reference". I found this gem for $10 at harbor freight. It has everything ..period. But worth note are knot tying, sewing, basic construction, electrical, chemistry. It's like a pocket wikipedia of only practical information.

those "scissors" appear to be safety shears, they'll go through a seat belt, and the weird thing on the end is so that you can safely slide them along a person without cutting them, great for removing a piece of clothing if necessary to clean a wound, actually cutting through a seat belt, etc. It seems pretty important for an urban survival bag.

A picture of a loved one is important for moral support in stressful situations which can serve to calm down and make more effective short and long term plans and it takes almost no space. Things like this can greatly improve your chance of survival instead of giving up.

Urban survival aesthetic is just guys in hoodies with cargo pants sitting in lawn chairs around a bonfire on top of a skyscraper. At least in my mind.

Playing cards can, in a pinch, also serve as some kind of kindling for a fire. Also, I imagine you can use them somehow to find your way back from some base camp?

You guys should do some actual woods survival, would be a cool series to watch.

Road flares. Can start fire with wet wood, or be used for emergency signaling. Also a close quarters weapon in a pinch. I also would throw in a jar of peanut butter. Protein and fat in a dense package. You can also make candles, waterproof seams, and eat it even if you lose the ability to chew. Also great for restoring black plastic trim on your car (trust me, you'll like it). I'd put in way more water purification equipment, and a hydration bladder. It's cheap and light and water is a priority. Get at least 3 good knives (1 clipped on your pocket, 1 on your belt and 1 in the bag.) Think a great big sturdy knife in the bag, useful for prying, digging and hacking. It should be sharp but doesn't have to be surgically sharp. That's what the little one in your pocket is for. Very fine edged and keep it razor sharp. (Don't go cheap on the knives, spend a little money, like your life depends on it, but you don't need 500 dollar Benchmade everything) I'd also upgrade the first aid kit, a couple disposable scalpels, sutures (vet supply store) and some occlusive dressings. Also consider buying a really good tourniquet. If you or someone you love is bleeding out, you don't have time to remember how to make one out of a bandage and stick and a commercial TQ is far better. Also consider a survival chainsaw (makes far less noise than chopping, very light and compact) and a really really good firestarter. Disposable lighter (or 3) and matches. SOCKS! SO MANY SOCKS!

Things I feel that could be added: fire starter/flint/lighter etc/matches Something to sanitize- like hydrogen peroxide. A physical map of your area. A big sharpie marker. Dental tools. A cold weather/knit hat Bandannas - or other small fabric squares. Dental floss. (Useful for so many things) Shoe laces. A serrated wire saw. Fishing line. (If room- a fishing net, hooks, etc) Gorilla Glue (takes up less room than duct tape- though duct tape is honestly more useful). Murphy’s idea of the hatchet is good- though a large knife works well too, and isn’t as heavy. Sunscreen / bug spray Also- not In the bag, but good to have- durable pants, heavy duty hiking boots, and thick socks.

If I were to add one thing, it would be basic spices. Nothing helps your sanity like adding a pinch of salt, black pepper, paprika, etc. to your food in a stressful situation. In addition, they take up whatever amount of room you feel you need, and can be used to trade.

Any bug-out bag needs to contain the 5 Cs of survival (as coined by Dave Canterbury): Cutting - a *decent* cutting implement. People argue over what this should look like (or if you need more than one), but it is essential. Combustion - Fire is a ridiculously important thing for survival. As such, you need a way to start a fire. Most people would say carry a lighter and back it up with a ferrocerium rod. Cordage - You do not realise how useful cordage is until you don't have any. From lacing a shoe to hanging a tarp, there are a myriad uses for cordage. Many people like paracord, as they can take the inner strands out for extra use. Container - A lot of people forget this one, but without a metal container, you're going to struggle to boil water - or even carry it. Cover - The first form of cover you have is your clothing, but a weather-proof shelter will dramatically improve your survival chances, especially when in extreme conditions. If your bug-out does not contain at least one of each of these, then you've got an issue.

Mar 22 2020: toilet paper is the most necessary of all items

Survival saw is better than the hatchet (aside from sef-defence). You burn less calories to cut for fire wood or building materials and you get more uniform cuts. You also get the sawdust to act as a very good fire starter. I'd recommend having both packed. Edit: It may be alittle more expensive to build your own bag, however, you can pack better for your area and your knowledge. You will also be able to buy better quality equipment, as you don't wan't cheap things that with break, function poorly, or not at all.

I think an episode where you guys are actually dropped into survival situations with bug out bags and then measure your performance against eachother would be cool.

Having been in a catastrophe, I can tell you that 72 hours is NOT long enough. After a hurricane, we were without power for 14 days. Food deliveries to local stores took 7 days. Roads were blocked for 5 days. During that time, two neighbors pulled knives on each other over a case of coke left out that actually had been given to me. One guy attempted to burn an others house because he felt the mans girlfriend had stolen money from him. I pulled a gun on a guy who was looking into my sister-in-laws windows holding a large butcher knife. Most of the pre-made bug out bags are full of the cheapest crap they can find that sort of meets the basics for surviving. Make your own bug out bag. The 'tent' looked thin enough a small twig would put a hole in it. Get some tarps. They are thicker and will hold up in a good wind. Duct tape is your friend. Carry some cash. Credit cards do not work in a power outage. Some soups come in boxes and can be eaten without heating up. Dynamo crank flashlights are great, no batteries. Storm radios that use batteries, crank, or solar can be had for about $45, and thy will also charge a phone. A cheap lighter can be had for $1. Protein bars are everywhere and last a long time. Toilet paper can have the cardboard tube removed and the roll flattened to save space. Dollar store is a great place for poncho's, small bottles of pain killer. Plastic cards are good if you can find them so water will not destroy them. Store it all in a laptop carrying backpack. All the pockets come in handy.

Day 75 of the Apocalypse: I've been crying for 2 days over what I did for a Klondike Bar. Thank God they didn't have flour or seeds.

I know this is an old video and there is not much chance you will see this, but taking Jason's idea further, I think it would be an awesome episode to see you guys on a survival challenge type trip.

Things it's missing: A single edged, fixed blade knife, with a whetstone That toy multitool might get you by on cutting twine and picking splinters, but good luck doing any real work with a 2" butterknife. Don't forget your whetstone, that shit won't stay sharp forever. Definitely a handgun. This is only for 72 hours, you don't need to pack an entire armory. Bring something compact that you can hunt with if need be, but hard hitting enough to stop a person. .32 to 9mm is a decent sweet spot unless you're expecting bear. Maybe I missed it, but have a few sources of fire. Have about 3 Cheap butane lighters as your primary fire source in most calm conditions. Then have a small cache of waterproof storm matches in dire situations. Lastly, have an unfuckable source of fire. You can't ruin a Ferro rod or fire piston by just dumping it in a lake. A Walking Stick. It won't fit in the bag, but having a sturdy pole that's about 4'-5' long is worth its weight in water. Have something to lean on while hiking, swat away small animals, swat away bothersome humans, tie your knife to the end and spear shit with it. Go ham. A fucking Steel Mess Kit. Your typical stacking pot, plate, and utensil set. Cook food you forage, boil water you find, stop using your work knife for eating. Pack a small bit of salt/pepper, packets of ketchup, whatever shit you like to make things taste better with. Maybe a small bar of chocolate. Little luxuries to keep you human innawoods. This one's pushing it for a 3 day bag, but a folding trench shovel. Dig a shithole, dig through snow, dig through stony hardpack clay, jump off a building and Market Garden your friends. In the end, this is a 3 day bag to keep you alive until shit goes back to normal. You're not prepping up to one man army an entire zombie apocalypse or build a cabin in the woods. It doesn't need a whole bunch of shit like a grappling hook, a pry bar, sledge hammer, bolt cutters, TIG welder, even a full handled axe or a rifle is overkill.

Those "gardening gloves" are a lot more resilient than you give them credit for. I get about a week and a half out of pair of them, doing welding, torching, and general ironworking. For something like building a shelter they'll last you quite a while.

The real cool thing for this episode is the realization that Brian has had the same iphone background for years.

Signaling mirrors are incredibly valuable in survival situations, but most people don't know how to aim it. A good method is to make a 'v' with your fingers and out stretch your arm. While holding the mirror in your other hand, place the 'v' on your target and flash the light across your hand. That ensures that the reflected light actually hits your target

That was the best bug out bag video I have ever seen! Thank you both for making me laugh out loud as well as admire you both for the friendship you both have. My bug out bag has two good knives; one folding, one fixed blade, a folding saw, and a hammock, a tarp, an inflatable sleeping pad, also multiple forms of fire making, titanium cooking pot, titanium spork, water filter, protein bars, bag of rice with beans, 2 extra water bottles for water storage. For all the people out there the best advice is make your own bug out bag with higher quality materials, if you can trust your life on something no amount of money matters if the equipment fails on you in a life threatening situation.

I remember at some point in the early 2000s my dad bought one of those radio torches and it was actually solid. Waterproof, good audio, extendible antenna, solar, dynamo and wall rechargeable, you could switch out the batteries if you needed to, and it was as bright as anything. Been trying to track another good one down since that one is long gone by now, but I do agree most of them are terrible haha. If it matters to anybody, I'm pretty sure it was from Dick Smith, cause he worked there at the time. Might still be some online. I gotta check.

One thing i think is really important is alcohol or cigarettes, both for yourself but most importantly for trading if you cant get to a store there wil be dozens of people who will “need” these things and will pay alot for them

Also 1. Towel cuz has hitchhikers guide to the galaxy taught you nothing? 2. A rag/bandana is a really strong multiple use thing that is really useful.

Snare wire, a real knife, swap the “Swiss army knife” for a gerber or leatherman multitool, Hatchet, fishing line and hooks, Note pad, ice pick, and compact hammock.

Part of being an adult is being able to fend for yourself, even if it's just long enough for help to arrive.

Some points I wrote down while watching: First of all, you should really consider building a bug out bag from scratch. That way, you always know exactly what's in it, and you have complete control of the contents. Food: I can see why a pre-built BOB manufacturer would go for these (cheap, last a long time, etc) but they're not that tasty and I could see it being bad for morale having to eat that all the time. You could consider some military (-style?) MREs instead. Also, you could feasibly rotate those. Water: WHY IN THE HELL would you ever NOT put your water in a metal bottle. Just replace the water every few months or so, you'll be fine. Also, metal is WAY more durable than whatever packaging material that is, and you can reuse the bottle, instead of leaving trash/tracks of where you've been. The radio flashlight thing: That just seems bulky and gimmicky. A small standalone solar/crank transistor radio and headlamp would be better IMO. That is a laughably small amount of duct tape. Paracord is nice, if it's the real deal. Whistle/compass/mirror: I guess it's fine, but see my criticism on the radio flashlight. Bulky gimmick. Signal mirror is good tho. Can opener: just carry a swiss army knife. Lightsticks are okay, I personally never used them but meh. Good points on the gloves. TP: flatten it. Face masks: take 2, crush up some charcoal, put it in between your two facemasks, tape together and hey presto, you have makeshift toxin protection. Pretty good, but 1 is none. Hygiene is fine. Catalog is just a cruel joke :-) Mylar bags (blankets? I didn't see) are great, as is the poncho. Emergency tube tent could be okay, though not as versatile as a regular tarp. Hand warmers are great. I've personally never been a fan of water purification tablets/powder of any kind, though I see the appeal. I carry a Sawyer Mini water filter, which has done everything I'd need out of a water purification system. Tablets are more compact though. I don't know what's in the first aid kit, so no comment. Advice on top of this comment still stands, put your first aid kit together yourself. That way you make all the choices. ALSO, FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE. Followup would be great!

Always keep a back up USB of important scanned documents like: Birth Certificate's, SSN cards, Deeds, family photo's, CV/Resume, Financial paperwork, Insurance Paperwork. You'll never know the disaster, and if you lose everything to a wildfire or anything you'll have a good leg up if you need to relocate.

Boy Scout handbook, some form of melee weapon, and a sleeping roll. You could throw in a wool blanket that's sized by you.

Some points that are a good supplement to the topics discussed in the video: 1. It is likely that the use of a "sports bag" backpack for this kit was intentional. An important aspect of creating BOB and survival kits in general is that you DO NOT want to bring attention to yourself. If people; especially those that did not prepare for disaster, suspect that you have supplies, they will attempt to take advantage of you. A conventional bag brings less attention then one specifically indicating it contains survival equipment and/or medical supplies. Also, openly carrying gear, whether it's expensive assault rifles or military-style gear/bags/equipment, indicates to people that you may be a possible threat and will attract unwanted violence. 2. The playing card are more important than they seem. Your psychological health is one of the first things impacted in a SHTF scenario. Anything that can distract, calm you down, and prevent you from becoming bored and/or hopeless are invaluable. 3. Carry valuable amenities. Money is an obvious choice, but that only goes so far before it begins to lose value. Amenities, objects that make life easier for people, will soon become the currency. Cigarettes, toilet paper, can openers, matches/lighters, batteries, maps, confections, water purification methods, etc. will all become extremely valuable as they become harder to come by. 4. The survival bars and purified water are supplements, not replacements. They are meant to keep you going until you can locate sustainable food sources. That's why they are high in fat and sugar, it will keep you energized until you locate more nutritious food sources. 5. It's a good idea to also carry a large cutting tool, such as a hatchet, large knife, or folding saw. They have numerous uses, most importantly to build shelter. 6. Carry spare clothing, including clothing meant to protect against regional weather. A change of underwear, t-shirts and pants, coats and jackets, sun-protecting hats. Whatever your region calls for. This is just a small list of things to consider when constructing a BOB. It should get you (novice viewers) to further consider what goes into survival kits, and hopefully look up more information.

I know I'm late- but I feel a lot is missing and a lot can be upgraded! Pair of jeans or lightweight canvas pants. Two pairs of long socks- Multi purpose for hand warmth, swapping socks out to prevent foot rot, tourniquet, etc. Sturdy, higher end bush knife (big enough to chop small trees and for self defense) and small whet stone to replace the 'multi tool' (they dont usually last long). Replace the light/radio with something more durable. Usually recharging flash light tools/tool combos are made of cheap plastic and break easily when handled roughly. And that one looks like it could be dropped twice on concrete before something breaks. A lightweight and small pot/metal thermos/metal cup/etc. - Its hard to boil water in a zip lock bag and zip lock bags easily rip and tear. Have something aluminium/stainless steel to cook and boil water with. Bug spray and/or sunscreen- It can make your survival MUCH more comfortable depending on the areas you will be living/traveling outdoors. A few lightweight/weather resistant maps. A small booklet on local flora (edible and non edible). Consider a small booklet on primitive traps for land and water wildlife if applicable (this should have a page on knots if you do not already know them but check first. Never trust your life to a square knot and it can give you something to do). Consider keeping a sheet with phone numbers. Maybe you have the CDCs number there. Maybe you saved your parents numbers in your cell as "Mom" and "Dad" and do not actually know their numbers. Lightweight tarp if space/weight allowance. If space/weight allows I like to advise to keep about 250 feet paracord (from a reputable company) supporting up to double your weight (slings, hammocks, climbing) and 50-100 feet of 10-20 lbs paracord (shelter building, lashing, traps, etc). 10 lbs mono fishing line (Be aware the knots are NOT the same for rope). A small spool does the trick, its not for fishing but it can have MANY purposes but is also nearly invisible unless someone is looking for it. If you're around water you can throw a hook in there but a lot of times fishing is unsuccessful in survival situations and time can be spent better in other ways to get food. Water proof matches/wind proof lighter. Bonus points to bring both! For my area I usually keep a small bag of dry tinder items as well as its super light weight and I dont know if everything will be wet or not. Consider a long gun and some ammo (dont over pack yourself! A gun does not help if you're only making 10 miles a day and have 250 miles to go!) 9mm Is a common item but everyone should consider a number of different revolvers due to ease of use and reliability. Also consider not having a gun. If you want to go all out keep a few various sizes of ziplock bags (they are super light) and swap out those ziplock bags for pull cord canvas ones that will last and be able to hold some sticks or something you want to take with you. Swap out the TP for paper towels. Its still light but more durable.... more swipes per wipe. This is passed getting long for a youtube comment but two more points- First, consider NOT having a gun. If you don't know how to use it, don't put 100 rounds down range a month and/or dont know how to strip it/clear jams it can be deadly to yourself as well as others. It can escalate situations- try walking it through a national guard checkpoint during a crisis. It can also make you a target for someone that does not have one- either when youre sleeping or when youre guard is down. Second, and I post this with every bug out bag discussion, KEEP A CHANGE OF PROPER CLOTHES AND SHOES WITH YOUR BOB!!!! These are not to carry with you but to swap out at your first realistic chance. No one wants to wait 4 days or walk for 5 in a suit/dress and a pair of dress shoes/heels! Keep a pair of clothes (or two for warm/cold) and a pair of shoes with any bug out bag to change into at first chance and ditch the clothes you had on. Wow, reading over that it was a lot. In summery, if you go to prepare a bug out bag DO YOURE RESEARCH. You will probably NEVER need your bag or even be able to get to it but if youre going to build one anyway make sure its legit. 15-35 lbs for the casual/15-85 lbs for paranoid preppers. Some folks say 85 lbs is too much but if youre prepping you may be caring 85 lbs of rock in a bag to train for the day yellowstone explodes or zombies come out.

Ok so I saw the EDC videos and in the back of my mind I was like, “I need to plan this for a disaster.” And I legitimately put a bunch of stuff I most likely will need in that scenario in an old Pokemon satchel and it [Radio Noise]ing scares me when Jason said “I’m gonna use a Pokemon bag.”!!!

To be fair if you buy a pre packed bug out bag you should still open it and inspect that you got everything and that everything is in date and so you can know where everything is. So seeing a catalog is fine as you may have just grabbed the bag at a big box store and want something else to add to it or for a second situation. As an urban bag I would also put a battery pack that has a good initial charge. I have an Anker 9600mAh battery that I charged months ago and still is more than half charged, and I would also put a solar powered recharger so you don't have to spend energy winding a flashlight to charge a phone but having both would still be good. Dont forget to put any medication you have to take in there (rotate that as well) and some multi vitamins as you may not be able to source things that have all of the vitamins you need. Also if the bag you get has room for it get a hydration bladder like a Geigerrig. Water takes up a lot of room but you can never have too much and even bringing an empty one that you can fill later is a good thing. A good knife, a good small axe, and a map of at least your local area. I am sure there are many other things I can come up with but that is all I got for now. It seems to be a rather solid kit.

A representative from FEMA said you realistically need supplies for seven days before they can even begin to move into a disaster area. Sucks that the 72 hour thing has become so ingrained.

Shoelaces. Absolutely a must have for survival situations. I want you to imagine everything goes to shit and all of a sudden one of your laces snap.

20:23 knowledge without experience = disaster. Don't wait until you need the book to read it. Take the book out and practice what it says so under stress it will be easier.

Add a proper knife to the kit (not a folding/leatherman type, actual full tang with a robust blade). Super useful in both wilderness and urban - both to process firewood, build shelter, and opening cans when you lose that micro can-opener.

Underrated items - Fruit and vegetable seeds. Trying to survive in a disaster, the ability to grow your own food is something that will be extremely impactful in your survival. All you need is soil, water and sunlight. If you can hang out in a safe area for a day, you could just use that time to grow, eat and replant your vegetables and fruit.

Hey Brian, I'm a Continuity Coordinator for the federal government and I wanted to give you a kudos for this one. Almost makes up for telling people to improvise tanks and smoke bombs (almost). Everything you said was spot on, especially about having a plan and adjusting to your personal conditions. Our plan is a 4-24 hour drive to a pre-selected location, so our bags reflect that. Yours would need to be adjusted to fit in your plan. The official recommendations we provide to our executives include: PRINTED relocation plan for yourself and your family with emergency phone numbers and PRINTED local maps Extra clothes appropriate to the location and season Phone with extra cables (note that normal communications may be down but SMS is very reliable) Essential records Extra prescription medication and glasses Extra fuel for vehicle (stored at home or in the garage) Extra money in small bills (if you need a bottle of water and all you have is a $20 bill, that bottle is now $20). Bags should be reviewed semi-annually (in part to change out the clothing and update documents). We do not recommend our execs carry firearms, but our situation is a little different. Test the plan at least annually, even if it's as little as calling those phone numbers and making sure they work. I'll be reviewing the list this summer and taking the ghost detector into consideration.

The bag needs 15,000 Nuka Cola bottle-caps.

You guys should look into the 10 C’s by David Canterbury. It’s basically about building your own bug out bag and the 10 types of items you’ll guaranteed need to survive for 3 days to a week or more. He mostly focuses on woodland areas but a lot of it can transfer over to urban prepping too.

I added forged arrow broadheads with tangs and 3 bow strings so I can make a hunting or fishing bow whilst in the forest. (Takes half a day to make, with practice, and means you can not appear armed until you need it. I'm in England so guns, knives, lighting fires, camping in the wild and hunting are all illegal 🤦‍♂️) Also, a fishing and snaring kit wouldn't hurt. Many books on edible plants and fungi are available in very small sizes too. Better to be able to source as much on-site, as possible. Also, a map of the route and location you're bugging to wouldn't hurt either. Little extras like salt, pepper (grab handfuls from a fast food restaurant) sachets of 3-in-1 coffee, a daily pill dispenser with some spices in and 2 canteens and metal water bottles.

The rest of that could be... worked with, in a pinch. That first aid kit is ENTIRELY inadequate. The number one problem you need your first aid kit to be able to handle in an emergency situation is significant bleeding. Everything else is secondary; if your patient bleeds out, nothing else you do for them matters. NO off-the-shelf first aid kit I've ever seen has enough of the right kind of supplies for that. You need tourniquets, pressure dressings, STERILE gauze bandages, medical tape, LOTS of gloves (if your kit is meant for a vehicle, just throw an entire box of nitrile gloves in it; no latex, some people are allergic), a chest seal, and a couple of those so-called "Israeli bandage" ETDs.

Baofeng uv-5r amateur radio. it's a stupid cheap ($30ish) battery powered radio with very long range, 5w of transmission power which is enough to talk to most people in a small town (a little further if you climb a tree or build a better antenna for it which is easier than you may think). it's also got a bit of a flashlight. it transmits and receives on 2m, 70cm, and receives regular am/fm radio, it can also receive several police and emergency stations as well, has a functional scanner and has a variety of recharging options. in a bug-out bag, I would recommend having 2 charged batteries for it, stored separately in a water tight bag and keep the radio in a water tight bag as well.

Watching this again during quarantine make a lot of sense, specially toilet paper and N95 masks

Big omission from this kit. Bug spray. Assuming something bad happens insects are gonna be a major nuisance that will make everything harder. Plus if you have to go into the woods you don't want to get Lyme disease from ticks or anything.

I would add extra clothing, especially wool or wool blend socks, because cotton socks would suck... I would add a slingshot, because not everything needs the loudness of a gun, and if you can shoot a golf ball low to the ground, it can sound like a person running, which could send people looking in the other direction, if you're trying to avoid being found! I would include three ways to create fire... Cheap lighter, matches, one of the plasma lighters you sell on ScamStuff.com, charge it with that flashlight radio you've got, because it's wind proof... phosphorus rods are great too because they don't need to be kept dry... Kindling to get a fire going... I would also include an empty water bottle, because the pouched water is great, but what if you don't want to drink a whole one? But the bottle doesn't have to stay empty, it can be used as a great way to keep certain items dry... Even a small all metal water bottle would be good for boiling water in... Keep a Lifestraw inside your water bottle to keep it from getting cracked... Don't buy the aluminum ones, they are useless if banged up or dented... I would add small sample sized bottles of alcohol in plastic bottles, not just for drinking and moral, but for disinfectant, and they're great for trade... I would include a bandana, because it could be used as a sling for an arm, a way to cover your face from smoke, a way to cover an bandaged wound, it could as a pre-stage filter for filling your water bottle, it could be used around your neck to keep you cool/warm... I'm sure I could think of a few more things, but that's just off of the top of my head...

Also an add on for urban survival kit is one of those public water keys for like the water spouts on the outside of businesses that don't have the turn keys on them access to water there

For anyone thinking of building a bugout bag, or even just for normal home use, I would *highly* recommend you pick up a pair of USB power bank-flashlight combos. Incredibly useful for a number of obvious reasons, and if you pair them with a decent solar USB charger you're good to go for quite some time.

Don't forget the Life Straw.

Add a folding saw, upgrade the pocket knife (swiss army, /Leatherman) Upgrade the shelter to a inexpensive not cheap tent and sleeping bag, take a first aid course, bic lighter and vasaline soaked cotton balls for tinder, Small pot to boil water and cook food, sports bottle, add more water tablets, any important documents, upgrade the flashlight radio combo or a separate one of each both crank so no worries about batteries Maps and compass of the area ur going, proper signal kit like mirror, flare, etc, for food some crackers, those freeze dried camp meals, jerky, peanut butter, Ramen etc

Upgrade the knife, and maybe add a saw, for sure more paracord. Bic lighter, spare zip lock bags, and a bandanna/shemagh. If you have room, spare clean socks.

Don't forget the gold, either alongside or instead of cash. Also maybe hat/sunglasses/helmet? Shovel too probably. More useful than an axe, and just as deadly

Not just a handgun, but a holster and proper training as well. If you encounter a life-or-death threat a gun is useless if you can't get to it in seconds.

I know this is now super old but the changes I would make is to just have a good high-quality rechargeable LED flashlight and a separate rechargeable 2-way radio (am + fm). Then, I would ensure that I have another method of power generation, a good one being a fold-out solar panel perhaps a 15 W which balances to power generation without being too large. As well as that a good 20,000 milliamp-hour battery would help you make use of that. Finally, I would include an emergency foldout shovel. These are great! They usually have a serrated edge which suddenly means you don't just have a place to poop but also a tool to cut wood and an alternative weapon to defend yourself. A lot of them also come with waterproof storage in the handle which would be good for matches, lighter, flint and steel etc.

For other missing items: medications. Obviously, if you have any particular medical condition you want whatever it is that helps you manage that, but also general pain killer tablets (tylenol, aspirin, etc). There should probably be a basic first aid kit (bandages, meds, disinfectant) in there. Maybe a minimal change of clothes in case you get wet & need to change to dry out.

For a firearm, I recommend the AR-7. It's lightweight, fires a small cartridge so you can carry lots of ammo. Even better, it's waterproof, and the whole thing can be broken down and packed inside the stock. If you live up north, you'll also want a large caliber handgun as a bear gun. Because anything smaller than a .44 is just going to annoy it.

I would add all of the following, a pair of standard scissors(the EMT shears are nice but not suitable for all uses), an extra first aid kit that could be attached to your belt for when foraging(allow the larger one in the bag to be used as a home base kit), a Storm proof lighter, storm proof matches(Which could be stored with their striker in the whistle), a fire steel and some dried birch bark. I would probably replace the folding knife with a folding saw and a knife with a static blade that had a tang that runs at least half of the handle.

When they refer to "dont have your bag look like a bugout bag" most are referring to military style bag will MOLLE webbing and such. kind of on the nose. When on deployments where we would be able to go off post and out into loval towns, they advise a simple backpack or one of those simple drawstring sacks.

I've watched a few survival shows in the past and with them mentioning getting lost in the wilderness, there is always 1 thing I keep hearing from the 'pros' when it comes to water. If you are in a hot area or stranded, drink your water and don't force yourself to ration it too much. Your body would apparently ration it off for you and use it as necessary. Apparently people were being found with having clean water on them but still dying from thirst. That isn't to say that you should chug all your water. That would be pointless as you'd likely lose a lot of it if you were forced to take a leak immediately. Now, Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger on a year old video. Btw, apparently, even if you don't feel hungry, at least try to snack while on the move. Your body uses up a lot of energy if you are making shelter, moving around, climbing over things, etc. Even if you don't 'feel' hungry, your body is constantly using up calories to keep you moving. I already know that if an apocalypse situation were to hit, I'd likely die off pretty quickly from just how sickly I am normally, even for a guy my size and build.

I highly recommend building your own bugout bag, testing it, refining it. Because everyones needs are different. I live on the East Coast where hurricanes are a serious threat and I orient my bag toward that. Also overall it will generally be cheaper to build a custom pack vs a premade one, or at least you can control the quality of what you include. Also TBH a big form of currency people don't think about in a post apocalypse scenario is.... PORN! Lots of people hord gold, water, guns, ammo, very few people stash porn which is a commodity just as much as any of the others. Also you guys should build a Faraday Cage as a follow up to shield from EMP.

The one thing I'd say is missing is a pair of "diagonal cutting pliers" (basically beefy wirecutters). Reasonably light, and can let you just slice through padlocks without much effort. Lockpicking tools are good to have if you know how to use them, but cutting pliers are also great for cutting through a lot of stuff. I go a step overboard and have a pair of folding bolt cutters packed, but I'm thinking of taking the step back down based on weight.

I'd go for one of those folding bows instead of a gun. It will be more useful in the long run. A notebook and pencil or so would be good too. A place to note down important developements or locations or maybe even a guide to eatable plants in the area.

Honestly, I'd swap out the water with a canteen, filter and a steel container to boil. I've had those packets burst when throwing my pack across a stream

I would agree with most others here, some kind of firestarting kit, a knife and/or hatchet and some kind of cooking equipment for heating food are all missing. you mentioned cash and a gun, and both are also very valid points. honestly, I think the best bug-out bags (B.O.Bs) wind up if not an outright copy, then at least resembling the kit carried by soldiers. the MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment) is, to me, the platonic ideal for a BOB.

I personally would add a three pound hammer and 2 ft of rebar because if you find like granite or another dense rock you can make (if your good) up to 10 arrow heads

A road map and a topographical map of your area. Extra wool socks. Good reliable magnetic compass. Bandana. Hat.

Given how easy they are to store, non lubricated condoms are very useful. Other then their intended purpose condoms can be used for a number of things. A condom inside a sock or other cloth (to prevent punctures) is great for carrying water. Condoms can be used to keep things dry, so they are excellent for keeping your tinder usable. In a pinch they can even be used as rubber tubing to build a slingshot or for use a tourniquet.

Mini solar panel. Gaming laptop. Cyanide tablets for when it breaks.

I would add a fireproof capable pot. also, fire starters so you can cook and purify water once your tables will run out plus it will be quicker than waiting four hours more like 10 minutes to get to a boil, don't forget a clean rag to filter said water. but a collapsible bow saw would be also good, a takedown 22LR rifle for hunting small game like the AR 7 so if your swimming across a river it will float. but an AR pistol in 300 blackouts or an Ak pistol in 7.62x39 for larger game and human protection would be "ideal". I am an Eagle Scout so I believe that some words have some weight.

I would put a hand saw in there, but that is more relative to my location because I live near a lot of woods and forests
