Was really excited to see this video. I saw Liams video a while ago where he said he was having a hard time getting a hold of you but was sending the axe any way. Can't wait to see you try it out.
Liam is a true craftsman. Of the highest order. As an FYI. He hardens the poll so that it can be used to hammer on steel. Tent pegs and such and won't mar and mushroom.
Yep, soon as saw the axe, knew a proper camping axe, as can chop and hammer in the tent stakes. Meaning, saves weight and don't have to go find a rock. ;p
Wranglerstar I say that id love to see all you youtube craftsmen form a "Guild", somewhat like the guilds of old, but moreso in name. Promoting each others work and cooperating. Would be great to start seeing tradeshows where all the great RU-vid craftsmen make appearances.
Alec I want you to know Jack and I love your videos. The amount of effort you have put into your video production is very much appreciated, thank you. P.S. Good job on the Samurai's chisel,
If we could get Cody, Jesse, Alec and Liam all in the same video, boy would that make my day, my week, or even my month!! How about a Quad Collaboration?
As a subscriber and avid follower of Cody, Liam, Alec Steele & Jesse the Samurai Carpenter, I gotta say - I love these crossovers!! This is how a community is built, by competent craftsmen recommending and giving support to each other's fine work. I love it!!
I have a Liam Hoffman Blacksmithing Axe.I know him and he truly is a great Guy.He makes all his handles and his Mom does the leather work.He has videos on him making his handles.Absolutely amazing!
My brother has two of Liam's axes and it blows me away a kid his age ( I believe he's in his early 20s) makes such and extremely high quality tool, being in the trades I worry about the today's generation knowing how to actually build and make stuff, hopefully there are more kids out there like Liam!!
Thanks for having such an appreciation for things of quality and making a big deal of it. this way of seeing the world just isn't in our way of thinking anymore. nice work Liam Hoffman
Congratulations Liam, I've been waiting for this video once he announced he'd be sending one to Cody. I knew it would be a good review. The axe is hardened as well so you can use for pounding unlike other axes that require no contact to them.
I have easily 150 axes and my Liam Hoffman is by far my favorite. I asked him to make me a fireman's hatchet well over a year ago and I was thrilled to see it became a production model. It is the highest quality tool I have ever owned!
Truly a beautiful piece of functional artwork. I just read his bio and this is a young many who has only been doing this for 8 years and is only 21 years old! Amazing. Can't wait to see your videos where you are using this axe to hear how you like it after using it.
Fantastic to witness Your channel Cody & Liam's progression on RU-vid over the last few years, all my favourite craftsmen are creating a wonderfully enjoyable community and cross over videos making things for each other it's just great to watch! Keep up the good work!
Cody, The sheath is tight because you are putting in on backwards. The snap goes on the axe on the same side as the Maker's Mark. It is just beautiful. Thanks for Liam's channel.
LIAM did a fine job as all American Tradesman can do . Proud of you LIAM ...enjoy it Cody and your son it will be around for years. A true Gift from the heart..God Bless
Thanks for sharing the work of Liam! He is a well rounded young man with an awesomely bright future. He does amazing work on his knives and axes. Absolutely amazing and an EAGLE SCOUT, too!
"Give me a moment here" at 2:00... After 22 seconds Cody came out of his trance... Loved it, a man who appreciates what it takes to "do the work"... (Tred Barta)
Sometimes I think people just cannot refrain from disliking a video. Sad little people! Cody, I love the vids, and the channel, I love the passion and genuine appreciation for tools that you express. God Bless you.
Your a lucky man Cody. Would be great to see a video of it in use! loving the timber framing, keep up the great work! Ps: Maybe time for another triple axe challeng, Hoffman, Autine, Gransfors? :)
Came here from Liam's channel. I'm glad to see that you agree with what I noticed when first happening upon his channel. True love and passion for the craft. It makes all the difference in the world. = D
I think the sheath is that tight because it's on upside down. It looks like it has a non vertically reversible shape to it to properly fit the bit right side up. Truly another mark of exceptional craftsmanship.
Wow what a lucky man you are to receive such an heirloom tool. Something to definitely hand down to the grandkids. Never heard of these until today and looks like the wait time is 12 months with 10 produced each week with a different design each week. This truly GAVE ME The FIZZZZZ. Very talented man to say the least!!!!!
So glad you finally got the axe from Liam. You didn't mention the walnut wedge. His craftsmanship is truly exceptional. I have a Hoffman blacksmith rounding hammer and it is just as fine as his axes. As soon as I got the hammer I ordered a hatchet from Liam. Can't wait to get it!
Been waiting for this for a long time. Liam started very young and has a great American craftsman story. As I remember, all the polls on Liams axes are hardened. Just FYI. Great video!
Hello Wranglestar. I own a Gransford Bruks axe, gave it to my son. So was going to buy another. Will choose instead, Liam's. A titanic amount of skill to make something like this. I wish him all the success possible. Appreciate you comparing the two axes.
Well Wranglerstar, you've made me want an axe from Liam, to hear you talk about that axe the way you are with the experience you have with axes. I think one of Liam's axes will be my next axe purchase.
great review. glad to see it next to the small forest axe for size comparison. being a larger man the small forest axe seems on the light side. Thanks Cody
Yup Liam's are the first axes I've seen that actually made me drool. Every one is a treasure. Thanks for showcasing this one--it's quite the little bulldog by the looks of it.
As usual you nailed it again. Your chanel has always been great and is only getting better. You are humble, hardworking and not in any way pretentious. its lovely to see someone who has respect for the achievements of others and does what they can to help the get on. Good man yourself. Thanks for all the reviews.
If you haven't watched the back videos on his channel yet, Liam DOES do all the handling himself... much of the handle carving done with a draw knife, believe it or not. He did a video on handling a few months back. It's WELL worth watching!
It's very pretty mate. The problem here in Australia at least is all the woods are hardwood. My Granfors small forest chipped on first use. So a hardwood.grind is preferred like a Snedden Razorback.
Cody, you gave us all a jolt of fizzzzzz with Liam's axe! What a beauty! I want.... Will ad Liam to the list of craftsmen I follow. Ended with lovely music. Thank you.
One of the marks of quality leather work is that they use solid brass or copper rivets with heads on both sides, which is much more durable and expensive than using a universal hollow style rivet. It is something I always look for.
I just happened to stumble upon his work after watching his episode on forged in fire. I really want to add his camp ax and the Jager model fixed blade knife to my collection ( he uses 3V steel in the Jager, one of my all time favorite steels )
Incredible talent! On his site, he says that he hardens the poll so that is can be safely used as a hammer on steel without damage to the axe. He also has a sharpening video that is amazing.
i know that very few axes compare to your beautiful Liam Hoffman, but your beloved gransfors bruks small forest axe may have yet another challenger. Council tool has come out with a "WOOD-CRAFT pack axe". 2 pound head on an 18" handle. The head has a similar pattern to your Small Forest axe. maybe a challenge video
Cody, Liam has built a beautiful perfect size axe. I recently watched "Tips from a Shipwright", Louis Sauzzede, cut down a tree in New York and sawmilled the lumber out in the woods for a piece for his wooden boat. I will let him know about your channel and Louis's channel. He builds beautiful wooden work boats up in Rhode Island.
my best friend and his dad are blacksmiths as well. and they always make viking era axes. but they make than of such great quality and they are so nice that the orginazation of the biggest viking reanactment event in the world asked them to sell them at their event and they told them they had never in their lives seen such awesome axes
How close are you to putting up the video with regards to the axe performance Wranglerster? I'm keen to see the performance of the steel and how it compares to the faithful small forest axe.
Liam is a top notch craftsman, every bit of that axe from bit, to handle to sheath all hand made by him. Heart and soul workmanship. BTW, you keep putting the sheath on upside down. Watch the beginning of your video. It hooks under the beard, then over the top.
You forgot about Council Tools premium axes. Made in America with American steel and hickory. Their regular line has been used by the forest severe and wild land firefighters for a century.
So Cool...the way you Showcased that beautiful Axe! And you're so humble..."hard pressed to get an edge like that." You are the Master Sharpener! If I buy an axe...I'll be buying a Liam Hoffman for sure! Thanks for the great vid. ;) cate
I am from the UK. But if Liam is the example of Made in America. Well call me Smiffy the Yankee. Great work all round. You is a Lucky man Mr. Wrangler Sir.
Nice axe, I have found a lot of good channels when you guys collaborate, Alec Steele is great and everyone should watch him. He is just a really happy guy even when everything is going wrong he's still smiling. You know what would have gone really well with that great music at the end is some drone flyover of your area I bet it's very nice there right now.
Another great feature of his axes is he hardens the poll so it can litterly b used as a hammer. Oh and the sheath goes on with the strap on the top of the blade.
