That was a very fine lot--some truly superb specimens. Poor Crispus, Constantine's son. It ended really poorly for him, and his fate was, it is said, perhaps Constantine's greatest regret. I look forward to watching your forthcoming look at the coins of his dynasty that you mention. They were absolute savages, particularly to each other. Theirs are also pethaps the likeliest coins for newcomers to ancient coins to acquire due to their low cost. So, I anticipate great interest.

Great coins overall. Even if LRBs aren't your thing, one has to marvel at the ones that somehow survived the overissuing of currency with a good style and size.

I clean dirty coins, and one of the highest quality coins I have dug out is a Constantine I. The detail is very, very fine. What always amazes me is seeing detail like that, because those coins are tiny and those dies were engraved **by hand**. At that tiny size. I marvel at how they did that with the instruments they had available to them. We in the modern era would create those pictures in a large size and then use some photo\acid process (or whatever) to shrink them down to create the dies, but they didn't do that - if you needed a denarius sized die back then, you engraved a denarius sized die. I'm astounded they don't look more like stick figures and clumsy blobs, to be honest, but they don't. I'm far more impressed by the ancient engravers skill than I am with the engravers of our own modern coins. Ours look better, but... how they were made is seriously different.

Great video! I’m just starting out and you’ve been a huge help, so thank you! Cool to see you talk about these coins you are adding to your collection. My first purchase was a Constantinopolis Commemorative because I loved the classic look of the helmeted bust (and the price tag!) as well as a Constantine/Sol follis. Looking to do a collection of Constantine era coins to start out so I’d love to see a video on that in the future. So many great options for collecting out there to choose from. Keep up the good work, do do a great job! 👏🏻

The late roman coins are lovely and it's cool that you can clearly read the name of the mint and of the exact workshop that made your piece. Actually nowadays it'll be interesting to discover where the different workshops of each mint was located. Personally i like some Constantine's related types such as soli invicto comiti, urbs roma and constantinopolis.

Hi Leo, nice coins! The consular bust style employed both for Constantine I, Licinius I and II in the 317-321 coinage of the Licinian empire, is quite interesting and unusual. The style was also used for Constantine but neither for Crispus nor Constantine II. In AD 318, the consulate went for Licinius Aug and Crispus Caes.; in AD 319, for Constantine Aug and Licinius Caes.; in 320 for Constantine Aug and Constantine II Caes. So they all exercised the consulate in this period, yet just Constantine and the Licinii had consular busts in the coins (all the time).

Currently have one Roman coin. Constantine I with the 'signalpost/Campgate reverse'. The coin is quite a propoganda coin with a lot of speculation on it's meaning. Thanks for the video, very interesting!

My collection has a lot of late Roman bronze coins because I buy uncleaned lots. Lots of Fallen Horsemen. Can you explain why Constantinius II is so common?
@ClassicalNumismatics
@ClassicalNumismatics Год назад
Constantine II is so common because he was around for a very long time! He was made Caesar when he was 1-year old, so he had coin struck on his name for 20 years as Caesar and 3 years as Emperor. At a time of very intense coin output, having coins struck on your name for over two decades means a LOT of coins, BILLIONS likely, were struck.

Very interesting. I wonder if your Helena piece is Nicomedia or Heraclea. In the mintmarks the N for Nicomedia and the H (eta) for Heraclea are practically indistinguishable. Interestingly RIC VII Heraclea 79 has officina B, giving us the mintmnark SMHB, but the corresponding RIC VII Nicomedia 95 only lists officinae Γ and Δ, so that RIC does not list this piece with mintmark SMNB. Let me know what you think ! I really enjoy trying to identify Roman coins.

The coins had some silvering over them AND some small silver content, 1 to 2% around the Constantinian era, it wasnt just the silver wash.

To be fair to the coins referring to the republic, republic didn't really mean back then what it means today. Republic didnt have to be a democracy. Republic had a broader definition closer perhaps to 'state' or 'commonwealth'
@ClassicalNumismatics
@ClassicalNumismatics Год назад
Yes, absolutely ure right, but even during the empire, there was always a façade of "true republicanism" going around.
