I had a project to do and did not have the right size tap and die in my kit for the bolts I need to repair. So I picked up a new metric set and give it a good testing.

If you do a lot of cleaning and reconditioning of threads, then thread files or thread chasers are a better way to go. Taps and dies tend to cut the damaged threads, removing metal. After removing the metal that interferes with the mating threads, it will go together, but you risk losing a lot of strength. Thread chasers aren't sharp, so they push the damaged threads back into proper alignment. After chasing, assembly often requires more torque than after rethreading, but the connection is usually stronger.

Good to know. I will have to look into that. Thanks!

Yes, Lang and one other brand (the name escapes me) makes them domestically for the tool trucks etc. Not expensive, like $80 for SAE/metric set, or you can order individually. Tap & die set looks good though and the warranty covers any wear. Might have to grab it …

I have not used them a ton but the times I have I have really liked them. I have gotten the sae set since this video and have been very happy.

Good evening, Thanks Justin! I'll keep an eye on the bolts on our chipper blades. Have a good one, Ben 😎👍

I think the bolts were more of an issue with the quality of the chipper I bought and not a common issue. My next video on Saturday will go into a lot more detail. Thanks for watching and take care!

Hi Justin, as you mentioned there does not seem like much of a cost difference between the two sets. The ICON appears to be a much better set. Thanks for sharing. Dan 😊

Yes I agree. For the extra cost I think the icon is the way to go. Thanks for watching!

My guess is the first blade was tapped m8x1.25 (coarse pitch) and the rest were m8x1.0 (fine pitch). 😏
@JustCaidsDayFarm
@JustCaidsDayFarm Год назад
That’s possible. However my old kit had a 8x1.25 and that still didn’t fit. I think the hole was a different size all together. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I need a new set. Ive had one from harbor freight a smaller set ina crappy box that the cover came off and i lost most if the parts for it. Thankfully i did find the 3/8th tap last night.. and tapped the mounting bolt holes for my Jeep J10 bench seat so i can finally put the seat in. I noticed that tap also took dmg on tje first 2 or 3 threads on it. And that was used in mild steel on a floor pan nut. The metal on your and ny set is probly jist weak steel. Harbor freight is the only place i really buy my tools.. ive had great luck with most of them.. especoally ny flux welder ive had for 7 years. But the only tools i do hate from harbor freight. Is the drill bits. Those yellow titanium drill but sets they sell are TRASH.. ive broken tons of them from drilling mild steel

I have been buying more tools from harbor freight and have been having good luck with them. There are things I will not buy there though. Drill bits would be one of them. I bought a Pittsburg torque wench and that was not very good either.
@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305
@@JustCaidsDayFarm ya i have one those torque wrenchs fall apart on me.. like it unscrewed itself and everything fell out.. But i git another ive never had an issue eith em other thsn thsy.. i have the incj lbs. Foot lbs. And the like 3 foot long one for like wheel hub bolts

How was your chip evacuation on the tapping? I mean you went straight savage mode and didn't back the tap out even 1/8" on your turns - and nothing snapped.

Horrible Fright is the last place I would buy taps and dies. I learned through experience that they have trash cutting products. As a machinist I have found that the names Hanson, Irwin, Cleveland and others are the better choices. The stuff from HF is almost always dull and sometimes even has chipped cutting edges. In short, you got lucky that you got that far with that rubbish.

So far both my metric and sae sets have been working really good from harbor freight. For the amount of work I do they are just fine. I also used an Irwin tap and it was very comparable. If I did more with them I would probably invest in better ones.

You may want to take another look at the icon line of HF tools. They are stepping up their game, big time. I'd take Icon over post-US made Craftsman for sure. I like Irwin as well, but Icon is definitely not the same as Pittsburgh tools!

The taps & dies are pretty decent, you can push them and feel them flex a bit without breaking. Most taps strong this price range are too brittle for that. Most importantly you can warranty any taps/dies that breaks or gets dull. Let me know when Irwin Hansen does that lol
