I have two of the slightly larger version…the BioCompact 50. I am really happy with them. Have one in a 5 gallon with a few guppies and it creates impressive flow to move the plants around and for them to play in. Plenty of filtration, too. I used the blue sponge on the little gurney, and filled both pill boxes with Seachem Matrix. The second one is in my ten gallon betta tank. Same setup inside the filter, but found that even at the lowest possible setting, the flow was still more than my betta cares for, so I put a pre-filter sponge over the output, and that diffuses the flow enough so that even on high, my betta is happy as a clam. (The little scoop that attaches to the output holds the sponge in place.) Your review helped me settle on the filter, and I am so happy with it! Thank you!

As this can be positioned horizontally, can it also be used as a surface skimmer at the same time as a filter? Thanks.

I’d imagine so however I cannot comment for certain as I have never tried it. My only concern would be cable management as the cable comes out the top of the filter, placing it horizontally would give you a less attractive look. But give it a try and see, I’d be interested to know if it works. Failing that if you didn’t want to use the bio compact as a skimmer or it doesn’t work Oase does have a skimmer out now in two different models and they have flow adjusters. I have one and they are great will be doing a video soon on it so stay tuned 😊💚

I see the video is 11 months old. Is the filter still holding up? I just got 1 and turned it on. It seems pretty weak but I'm used to hobs

Hi Scott, compared to a hang on the back they will seem a little under powered. however, for up to a 30L aquarium I found no issue. I’ve seen people use the stocked filter media have the finer sponge clog up quickly but I swapped the fine filter foam and the carbon out for bio media and haven’t suffered this issue. I clean my aquariums once a week and do filter maintenance as well no issues this far. Find them to be really nice little nano filters. Stocking levels can also make performance vary I’ve only used them with Bettas, nano schooling fish and shrimp. Hope this helps, any further assistance I can aid with drop me a message! 💚

Is it silent or is the vibration loud? I was gonna put this in my 15 gallon along with my other internal filter which is rated up to 10 gallons what do ya think?

Thank you for the question Tim! As I’ve found with all Oase aquarium products they run efficiently and silent as possible. Only time they’ll ever make noise is if the water level drops or they haven’t been cleaned in a long time (which I usually do mine every week with a water change) although rated for a 50L (10 gallon) I would suggest this too much for the unit as it is very small. I would look into the BioPlus range. The BioPlus 100 should be fine to run the aquarium on its own and they have a Thermo version if you keep tropical fish. This may serve you better. I have a unboxing video of the BioPlus on my channel. 😊👍

@@HW-Aquascaping I will look into the bioplus.i was hoping running this biocompact 50 along with my penn plax 300(70 gph) would be enough filtration for my 15 gallon but if you think one larger filter is better I'll probably do that.thanx for responding!

The two together should be plenty but depends if you’d rather run two filters or have one that can do that job on its own? Plus with the BioPlus having the heater all hidden is a plus. And not a problem!

I just got this filter but it is not silence it vibrates very hard and i use the lowest setting how can i fix this i also use the dennerle corner filter and this one you dont even hear at all will it takes some time? Does it need to be above water or can you put it also under water?

Thank you for you comment! As I’ve found with all filters they can take a few hours to a couple of days to purge any air from the media, this will make it quieter. If it’s gurgling it could be too high, I run mine a little just below the surface. I’ve not come across any issues with it being noisy so I’d say give it a week and see if there’s any progress with noise reduction, hope this helps 😊💚

Can shrimp get caught between the filter fins?
@HW-Aquascaping
@HW-Aquascaping 2 года назад
A great question thank you for commenting! It’s a hard one to answer I haven’t had it personally happen to me however I wouldn’t want to say definitively no they wouldn’t. However on the lowest flow settings my betta fish can swim round like no tomorrow. To add to the filter sponge within the chamber is dense enough should any shrimplets get through I doubt they would be harmed and can be safely released into the aquarium. I recon on the lowest flow setting combined with the dense filter media you’ll have nothing to worry about. However if you are worried Oase do have a smaller model the BioCompact 25. Either that if you are just keeping shrimp and are worried about them a simple sponge filter will be your best option. Any more question feel free to ask away, but hope this helps 😊💚
