I bought band size from a local grower, Peter Schneider (may or may not have heard of his book, Right Rose Right Time). He advised me to leave them potted until they put out their first bud. Essentially; once a plant’s root system is developed it will turn to production fruit/flowers. Another’s tip. Don’t make the mistake I did and put them in a huge pot right away. The soil will dry out faster and the roots will dry out. Hopefully that’s helpful.
I've bought about 15 or so roses from High Country over the past 3 years. They do arrive very small, so I pot them up the first growing season and then either plant in the ground in the fall or the next Spring. I've only ever had one failure from High Country, which was Rosa Mundi. All the others have done well, even if it takes awhile to get them fully established.
I received some roses from High Country a few months back and I reacted the same, like you said they should do well even if they are small and spindly. Fingers crossed 🤞
As someone said pot them up in to build a bigger rootball then plant them you might even be able to in the the fall. Don't use really big pots 3 gallon then 5 gallon. Ive done that with small band roots it works well. Im doing that a small gallon size one I got recently. I just went to Lowes got a five gallon growing pot for like almost 4 dollars. It's those little black growing pots. Also with the small bands give them a little sun each day but not harsh full sun at first.
Last year I planted my HCR bands in the ground because everyone kept saying the best place for them is in the ground. I just checked them last weekend and I don’t think I lost a single one over winter. Total newbie in zone 6a but hopefully it goes well for you. I did order more from him.
I live in north Denver and bought a lot of roses from HCR and they do great but depending if the variety some are smaller, I just bought a tiny queen Nefertiti and 😅 expecting the best.
Your roses are lovely and I always enjoy watching your videos! I just bought two roses from Heirloom Roses and they suggest not to use granular fertilizer for the first year. What liquid fertilizer did you use on your roses from Heirloom roses?

I have a question on these2qtz roses, I got some from Heirloom Roses, Louise Odier and Summer Romance because of your videos. Would any one recommend that i prune them this Spring since I planted them in the Fall. The Odier isn’t growing as much compared to the Summer Romance
I do not prune my roses the first year they are in the ground, unless there’s some dead canes. I would hold off on pruning unless the canes are really long and flopping over!

Hey y'all! I see a lot of rosarians commenting so I thought I'd ask for advice. I live in south Alabama about an hour from the coast, zone 8b. I have an east facing backyard with mostly clay soil. There are mature crape myrtles at the four corners and my neighbors to the east have a row of mature privet. So there is a lot of shade in the summer. I so so so want a parterre rose garden. I have had mega success with Duchesse de Brabant, Quietness, Zepherine Drouhin, and Belinda's Dream on the one side that receives more afternoon sun, but on the side that gets only 2 hours of morning sun I haven't found anything floriferous. LaMarque, Sombrieul, Duchesse de Brabant, Lady Banks, Louise Odier all are leggy and don't bloom. Has anyone had any success growing roses in 2 hours summer morning sun and then dappled shade til sunset? Should I abandon my dreams of symmetry in the parterre beds?
The only reason I did order from them is cause they were literally the only nursery that had Sutter’s Gold in stock! Not sure if I’ll order from them again. We will see how these do. 😊
I don't think the0 roses from High Country are not grade #1, the canes are indicating that they are not. SORRY, there's better growers out there. Mostly on hybrid tea's u want grade # 1. It's going to take alot for those roses to produce quality roses, maybe 3 years from now. I have grown roses for 40 years, if had receive these I would send them back and ask for a refund. Sorry I don't mean to be negative, just stating the facts.
Oh no they definitely aren’t. Typically, only grafted roses are graded though I think?! Not an expert on that. Very tiny to say the least! I just went on Edmunds and bought 3 more Top Cream roses, lol, I really want to see that one bloom this year!
@@summermoongarden Edmonds u will get top grade roses. I purchase 10 to 25 roses from them each year, never have a problem getting the best. A super company (family owed) to order from.
I usually order from Heirloom, but oh so expensive, so I tried High Country. Roses are smaller but healthy, definitely need at least a year of being potted up. Edmunds, on the other hand, sent me 3 roses in the middle of June, bareroot, which surprised me b/c that's late for 8b. Two of the roses were pretty small with dead canes & only 1 green cane, but they are slowly leafing out. The 3rd rose had 3 very strong canes, green but a little wrinkly as if they might have dried out, never so much asa single bud. I've contacted them, they responded promptly, but wanted a picture, which took me a while to get to them (roses, yes; technology, no!), we'll see how they respond. These were grafted roses on sale; my theory is they were maybe trying to get rid of the last of their bare roots & these were the leftovers. The 2 roses that are doing OK were absolutely not Grade #1 roses, & I prefer own root but they also carry roses that the own root folks don't, like Scentuous. And Sutter!
