Unboxing Mississippi: What It's Like Living in Mississippi

Is Mississippi racist?
Is Mississippi poor?
And is Mississippi still living in the past?
We’re going to answer those tough deep uncomfortable questions and talk about a whole lot more too. So go get yer mammies and yer pappies and yer pas. We’re gonna unbox the state of Mississippi!
The Mississippi River. What a grand gal she is. It’s the 2nd longest river in the country and certainly one of the widest in the world. I mean at the top of the river this thing is 11 miles wide! There’s water in that thing from 31 different states, and even parts of Canada. Along its banks are many major cities, and this waterway has been a critical means of transportation, power, and food for this country since before we were even a country.
1 out of every 4 species of fish is found in this river and its home to 40% of all migratory birds found in the US. It really is an ecological wonder. There’s stories about this river that make for some good reading. Lots of big boats met its bottom and many songs have been written about its muddy waters too.
Today, engineers are constantly battling with this river, creating artificial dams, banks and levees to try and keep the river within its current course. It’s very important to the south, and to the state of Mississippi in particular.
But this area near the river here in Mississippi are just a small part of this state overall. This state has a lot more to explore, and odds are if you moved here, you wouldn’t live anywhere NEAR the Mighty Mississippi. If you’re curious about what Mississippi is like, and are thinking of making this your home, well, then, you need to know all about the Magnolia State. And I think you might be surprised to hear that this state far exceeds whatever stereotypes you’ve heard in the past. I’d bet if you moved here, you might find it’s better than you’d expect, but worse than you would like.
This is Mississippi. You could break this state up into several areas, and each one would have its own culture, economic outlook and outlook on life. Some areas are really bad and some parts of this state are doing really well. It’s an average sized state - about the size of New York, but the population here is only about that of San Antonio. And as we’ll see, the population here is shrinking. We’ll see why soon enough.
But for now, let’s begin our tour of this state here in the northeast part of Mississippi.

As a black woman who's lived here all my life I will say this fairly accurate. I do actually have an education and never had any kids. I have a degree in sociology and have worked in social services for over 10 years now. I started out in early education so I have a good grasp on the social problems that plague our state. It's sad because there's so much potential here. It really could be an awesome place to live.

I have been in MI several times for academic related purposes. Oxford as a town was nice. So many different people. But I also ventured outside of Oxford. I am a person of color (but not African American) and I didn't listen to warnings of just staying in Oxford, don't go out. For sure it happened at a local gas station people were looking at me and I got the question "When are you going home". I never forget that. Generally when they smile at me, I know it is fake

Born and raised in northern Mississippi. Moved to Utah 2 years ago. Almost everything you said was accurate. I never hated my home state but I came west for better jobs, less humidity and better education. I wanted my kids to have better opportunities than I did. If the state turns around the economy and improves the education system, I wouldn't rule out going back because the people are really nice and it is, ultimately, HOME.

I think it should also be mentioned that Gulfport and Biloxi saw extreme destruction from Hurricane Katrina's storm surge (worse than the kind of flooding in New Orleans) in 2005, which can be attributed to the decline, blight, poverty, and crime in those areas. The Gulf Coast overall never really recovered from that disaster.

I grew up in Gulfport and lived through Camille. We really didn't recover much after. I think the reason for casinos was to generate much needed revenue I visit now and then but to be honest it's nothing like I used to know it to be. The crime is what makes me sad. It used to not be that way.

A funny tip, us southerners can easily mimic yall's accents better than folks from say New England or anywhere else in our nation. In an acting class I had taken, I learned this. Whenever I took on a role of someone from say England, I'd just reach deeper into my southern accent and then added words and euphemisms unique to your corner of the world - and my English accent was strong and almost natural. Same with Ireland, Scotland and Australia. But I have a hard time mimicking the different southern accents though so I understand. We don't talk all that good cuz our education ain't that good. Honest truth.

Channels like this almost always pass over the positive points in any state not just Mississippi.. The only thing that was mentioned in terms of International culture is the US city for the International Ballet Competition, which is on the Olympic level, and is held in Jackson every 4 years. Jackson was host to 4 International exhibitions in the 90s and early 2000s, featuring priceless treasures from Saint Petersburg, Russia, Paris, France, Spain, as well as Dresden Germany. When the Spanish exhibition was held, the King and Queen from Spain flew in for the celebration. Each of these Internationally recognized exhibitions were held for over 6 months each, and bought in hundreds of 1000s of scholars and priceless artifact observers. Natchez, Mississippi was only mentioned briefly in this video.. Natches and Adams County have over 200 structures on the national historic register, including the antibellum homes, and historical Mississippi River taverns, dating from the 1700s. Some of the larger antidellum homes rival the White House. Natchez has been featured in movies over the years and operates a film commission. Natchez is the oldest city of any size on the Mississippi River having been established in 1715. At 1 time, Adams County and the city of Natchez had more wealth than Wall Street. Also the blues music was only briefly mentioned but has spread throughout the world, originating in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, drawing in musicians such as Eric Clapton to study the music. Our message is, come on in and discover it yourself. You are very welcome.

I have a love hate relationship with Mississippi. I loved the folks I worked with when I was at the Stennis Space Center. I loved driving through the country and stopping in the small towns. Cassidy's accent brought back memories. Cities like Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs are beautiful. A lot of American culture, especially music, comes from Mississippi. However, there were some backward things that drove me nuts. I was not a fan of the politics. There was not a lot of opportunity for young folks. Most public schools are poor. There is a reason a lot of their best and brightest don't stick around after they graduate college. Agree with , it would have been nice to have interviewed folks of color as they make up more than a third of the population.
@AH-ih3wd
@AH-ih3wd 2 года назад
"backwards" why? because you don't like the politics, you deem mississippians as backwards? tell the peons, oh great one, who made you the gatekeeper of what is backwards and what is forwards? and in many places of the state, the population of black mississippians far far exceeds "more than a third." why more black mississippians weren't interviewed ought to be a testament to the character of this fellow making this trash. you can't have mississippi without black people. there's a bit of right in this, "unboxing," but most of it is pompous, stereotypical bullshit. i'll grade this "unboxing" as a d minus, at best, on its accuracy and factuality.

It works like this. Whatever color you are, how well you do is directly related to how much time you spend obsessing about your skin color. If you don't care about it no one else will either. On the other hand, if it's a big deal to you people will pick up on that instantly and it will tend to make them feel uncomfortable. What I just said might offend some but it is 100% true.

We basically have an older generation (70’s-80’s) of white men who do not want change, they have power, pull and money. When their generation starts dying off is when we may see some positive change for our state. We do have many contracts with large industrial corporations that are bringing lots of jobs to our state and recognition, but no one pays attention because we are just MS. I think everyone should be required to read “Dispatch’s From Pluto” it is a great perspective into the state. Honestly, if you have never lived here, you will never understand it.

It's amazing how the director of this footage filmed all the abandoned homes and buildings. I am from MS. Natchez to be exact. 2:05 is a picture of MLK in Natchez. The buildings are abandoned. Anyone that is from MS or small southern towns know we hoarder history. What the director didn't let you see was what surround those abandoned buildings. Well im going to tell you. An operational community. That street junctions Franklin Street which has several business owned by blacks and whites. Just less than 1 block away from the picture of 2:05 mins into the video. I just ask if you going to inform the world of certain areas give them the highs as well as the lows.

You missed some very important points about Mississippi. The second "religion" is collegiate football. Even Friday nights are high school football. I grew up in California but moved here 25 years ago. The people are very friendly and accepting. I love the slower pace of life. People don't eat out much. Everyone gets together for backyard BBQ instead. The public schools are bad but most families who can afford it send kids to private schools (church or prep school) and some home school. The first heart transplant in USA was done at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. We have many famous writers including Eudora Welty, James Faulkner and John Grisham. Mississippians lives are filled with church activities, family get-togethers and college football games. Brett Faurve and Peyton and Eli Manning are from Mississippi. Many men have "deer camp" during hunting season. A lot of people duck hunt with their trained Labrador Retrievers. Churches are segregated by choice. The worship style enjoyed by Black churches are very different than typical "unexciting" Baptist service. My church is mostly white but we have some Black families and Associate Pastor is Black. Get-togethers very important for all race families. Especially African-American. They can have 4 generations together with many children of all ages. Just before Memorial Day and 4th of July, grocery baskets full of fixins for good eats. Farmers with pickups full of sweet potatoes, boiled peanuts or watermelons sit along highways to sale their goods. Some of the best tasting melons straight from the farm. The poverty in Mississippi is generational. Lack of opportunities in small towns and bad public schools makes it hard to break poverty cycle. But that is no different from other poor states. But that is gradually changing. About 25% of students finishing medical school here are African-American. And many stay in the state to practice. White medical school graduates more likely to relocate to another state.

I was born in Tupelo Mississippi and even though I would like to explore the world before making a decision on where to live (I am only eighteen), I will always feel at home in Tupelo. I wouldn’t choose anywhere else in the state to live. I cannot speak for when this video was made, but as of right now there are plenty of jobs in Tupelo, not to mention the fact that we have the biggest hospital and the biggest high school in the state. Growing up near Tupelo I had the opportunity to preform in many full length ballets along with professional dancers from all over the world. I was also able to work closely with our amazing North Mississippi orchestra and the talented maestro Stephen Byess. So, I am no expert on the matter but to say that Mississippi is devoid of the arts is just not true. Just wanted share my perspective.
