That's straight up baller getting a DC Fast Charger! I love my Autel MaxiCharger. It was one of the best upgrades to my garage over the portable unit I was using for a few years. It would be cool to set up the DCFC for public use by payment and see how much you make vs electrical costs over a month or two. Put a video camera on the parking spot for the charger.

I would suggest putting in a 600a frame sized breaker that is adjustable (an ETU) so you can change the trip settings in the future when you get a new charger that has a different trip requirement. You can oversize the conduit and conductors too, so you won’t have to swap out those. Also, I’d recommend “skid mounting” the charger so it’s easier to swap out when you get a different one down the line.

It should also dispel some of that FUD that fast chargers are needed everywhere like gas/ petrol stations. I don't have a petrol station in my home / garage or driveway. Nor need a fast charger for anything other than long trips.

We bought around a dozen DCFCs from a competing brand for a school system and they ran $24k per unit. Level 2 dual stalls were around $16K each. Extra cost to consider is in conduit runs from the closest transformer, electrical service panel upgrades, concrete pad, stanchion, installation. internet connectivity, setup and ongoing monthly fees for the payment processing and management software. Biggest question we have now is how to setup the charger visibility so that they are not publicly available during school hours.

The emergency stop is supposed to always be user accessible in case of emergency even by a user or a professional. A basic example would be if a firefighter needs to do something on a car that is still connected to the charger, they need to be able to shut it down for good.

Hi Kyle, just a suggestion about the placement: please, think about the charger as a sculpture, a showpiece, an educational object, not as a 'charger'. When you look for a place you want to walk around it, you want to open all doors and show it to interested students, drivers etc. It will need pavement around it (not soil and bushes around the slab). So, don't squeeze it in a corner. The video is great as usual, thank you for the great job you do for us.

The tilt indicator is working pretty simple I guess. If the box was tilted a certain degree, the little steelball will come out of its pocket and land in another one, indicating the degree of the maximum tilt, that the box was "suffering" during the shipping. Never seen one before, but it should work like that.

That would really help with Kyle's demand charges. Run properly it could reduce them to zero, by keeping overall building demand plus EV charging less that the max the building alone would take. Paying the demand charge would be less expensive than a megapack, but a free megapack would be awesome!

Thoughts on the project: Get a mega-pack or equivalent donated/made (possibly a school project), maybe get the university to redirect (A/B switch) solar and wind to the battery pack, and put that inline with the charger to defer the day-time cost of charging students/faculty/staff charging. A school/OutOfSpec study on small install DC fast chargers with supplemental "green" energy can be a school project and feasibility study done to see what "mom and pop" small companies might expect. :) looking forward to the progress...

Wonderful to see. I’ve noted 25kW DC chargers (not ‘fast’ I guess) that are less than an order of magnitude more expensive than a decent AC wall box. It would be interesting to see a review of something at that end that isn’t crazy to think about for domestic applications.

@alsavage1
@alsavage1 9 месяцев назад
When you consider that a typical residential-use L2 EVSE is basically at the heart of it nothing more than a protocol parser and hardware interface, it's not so surprising that DCFC -- which has actual inverter hardware -- is so much more expensive. Look into what's inside a L2 EVSE and you'll be more amazed that they're as expensive as they are. $500 for a contactor, some wires, a nozzle, and some extremely basic protocol parsing? It's nuts how much money they charge for them. I own three OpenEVSEs -- they can be purchased in kit form and DIY asssembled -- and there's not a lot going on inside them. They don't generate any significant heat because there's no power conversion going on: it just makes sure it's safe to close the (~240VAC) contactor at the right time, after negotiating with the vehicle about how much the vehicle is allowed to draw. If the vehicle draws too much, the EVSE opens the contactor for safety. That's pretty much all it does. The vehicle does all the power conversion and thermal management that goes along with AC->DC conversion. In contrast, a DCFC has a serious thermal management situation, with the power conversion of a much higher level of power than the typical vehicle's onboard charger handles, and the conversion efficiency loss = heat that has to be managed. That's one reason DCFC cabinets are so large: more is going on inside.

That's pretty cool. It is good that you'll get to see the business end of the credit card reader so you'll know more about what a joy or disaster it is. One thing to consider is explaining through diagrams the exact path that the three-phase takes as it goes through the charger and into a car. All the switching, all the voltages and currents. That would be educational.
@toddkovalcik332
@toddkovalcik332 10 месяцев назад
My guess is that you'll need a load study on that distribution panel and possibly down line panels as well to ensure you do in fact have enough power for that new DCFC. Also, I'm guessing the campus/school will require a stamped drawings from an electrical engineer as well? Looking forward to seeing what the actual requirements will be and the total cost of construction combined with the necessary electrical work. Looks like a fun project!

One thing you should hit on with these homes is that neighborhoods built with this process will not turn into run down eyesores as so much of America has become. Wouldn't it be nice for once to be able to stay put (if your want) because the homes next to you and down the block are still looking great 60 years from now. Sounds quite reasonable that they'll explicitly include out of spec in their planning for lot expansion, and you'll have ability to work together. Seriously, that building and related staff could very reasonably be said to shave multiple $10K (and months) off of the rollout for this new focus. Plus the graphs and monitoring -- a huge value add that you'd need to build from scratch otherwise. Can you tell I'm a bit envious?

A tip with gravity based "tilt" sensors. Inertia also plays into how they work so hitting the brakes hard or swinging around a corner hard could activate them. A more reliable system would by a gyroscope based system, but that requires power to run, electronics to record the data etc, but on the other hand little plastic balls are cheaper.

based on the numbers it looks like to box was tilted less then 30 degrees to the left, it was tilted between 60-70 degrees to the right and less then 30 degrees both forward and back

The out of Spec team should do a joint project with Sandy Monro and get hold of an EA charger and take that apart and maybe find out its weakness in very hot and cold weather and a few other things

Kyle, maybe consider installing the 500A breaker and appropriate cable so that in the future if another company gives you a new unit you have more capacity without needing to upgrade/run new wire. (If my math is right 500A should cover you for a 350kw rated charger)

Finally got to watching this one. LOVE IT!!! It will be fun to follow along. On the slab. Make a couple lift points hidden under the unit. That way when finished with it at the test location, the slab can be lifted out of the ground. I'd do the outside overhead conduits. Then run them down to a U conduit in the slab for entry into the unit. Yeah, not pretty, but it is flexible for testing different units in the future. The U conduit could come out of the top of the slab, or out of the side and run to the side of the building and up. A splice box could be mounted high up on the building side. That way the conduit and wires from it to the charger can easily be swapped out for a later test charger. Those demand charges suck. Time to hit up battery bank companies for a demo unit for you and CSU to play with. Make sure the parking lot expansion plan has space for it and others.
