Today we are going to take a Thorough look at Paul Rubens watercolor paint. You can see all of the palettes I will compare here:amzn.to/3uocfvL
I will unbox, swatch, and paint a small painting with the new emerald green palette set: amzn.to/3jnfihk *At the time of uploading there is a 20% off coupon for this set and it comes in 4 colors.
I will compare it to the other Paul Rubens sets I have at the end of the video and compare set swatches and palette construction.
Pros of new Paul Rubens set in the green tin
*price
*cadmium and cobalt free (this is not a pro for some, including me)
*Nive balanced color selection
*Pigment and lightfast info included
*Unique tin
*Nice giftable packaging
*Nice glazing, lifting and blending
Cons:
My tin did not latch securely (I might have an oddball tho)
Bottom Line: This is another good paint from Paul Rubens. The only significant change I can see is the replacing of real cadmium and cobalt-based colors with hues. This was probably done to reduce cost or comply with consumers' wishes to use less toxic pigments. I prefer the original palettes with the cobalt and cadmium because I feel those those unique pigments give a palette more personality. This set, paint wise with the exception of the Manganese violet reminds me more of the Meilang Pretty Excellent paint this company also makes. Still, I think it is a good value and a nice option for those wishing to avoid real cadmium and cobalt paints.

Not sure if anyone wrote it already (or it's mentioned later in the video, so sorry if it is :c ) but the pb 66 in the indigo is genuine indigo! c: that would explain why its such a gorgeous color....just like with opera rose the most gorgeous colors fade T_T

Finally a review, it's like the whole internet is unaware of the existence of this palette. I've been eyeing the price on the black one for months. I found the description to be pretty unlcear so I questioned Paul Rubens directly about the difference with the previous palette. They told me this set is supposed to have mineral colors, better lightfastness and brighter colors. I like the addition of Naples yellow in particular but I don't understand why months after they started selling it they still have no open stock pans for this box.

That was fantastic!!! Thank you Lindsay- we saw the diff between 2 of the Paul Rubens 24 set, how the newest one is transparent, mixes, lifts & glazes well. Then we learned about mixing primary cool & warm colors...& how to get bright vs desaturayed colors...and there was more than that but I don't remember it all 😅. What a treat!! Thank you again!!❤

I have and love this palette. And a word or the wise if you’re seeing this now: I can’t find this on Amazon anymore but if you CAN find it grab it. It’s an EXACT replica down to pigments and layout of the Schminke Akademie 24 set. I wish I hadn’t spent the $120 on the Schminke Akademie and just bought the 24 Horadam set for another $30, seeing as I already had this Paul Rubens set which is basically the same as the Akademie. I lovelovelove Paul Rubens. I started with them and Kuretake Gansai Tambi and I still love and use both brands regularly.

I love watching your swatching videos because it gives me a chance to see different paints I don’t at this stage have access too and helps me decide which paints I want to try. I am currently using W&N Professional and have some Rembrandt on the way, I have my eye on Paul Rubens as well. I have some 30+ year old Rembrandt Pastels which I plan on getting back into again and I loved them when I was using them before I stopped doing art. I also love listening to your chatty videos and comparisons etc while I am painting and adding designs to my store. It allows me to listen to something while I paint and pick up tidbits at the same time. Your channel is great!

I think the paints look nice, but I definitely prefer the pink palette. I own the palette with 24 pans, and I prefer the colors in that one, including the cadmium and cobalt, and I think the higher price for the green set comes from the special palette, which I do not actually need. The Paul Rubens watercolors really are nice though and I will probably buy their set of 48. Originally I wanted to get their tube floral set, but unfortunately that one has completely disappeared from our Amazon. Oh and Schmincke also has a PV42 Magenta.

Beautiful tin . I think I hit the jackpot on Paul Ruebens last year when they had the 48% off sale on Amazon. I now realize that was probably to reduce inventory in their previous pink tin line. I picked up a couple of 48 sets, a couple of 24 sets, and a half dozen 12 sets for gifting in the future. Each set came with a journal. I am fond of the pink tins although I like the wells on the lid of the new tin. I can make a label with my Phomemo printer if I put different brands in the pink tins. I am always happy when I save $$$.

I'm glad you finally had the chance to try these. I feel like they are a great option for new watercolour artists. However, I think they could have replaced that weak purple and the weird Payne's Gray with more useful colours (like a dioxazine purple, maybe, and a turquoise colour). Also I believe that these tins (while really pretty) are a tad bit flimsier and not as thick as their "phosphorescent" line tins (the insert metal tray is different too). So there are definitely some compromises on the pigments they chose (like a multi-pigment Indian yellow) and the quality of the tin overall (btw, mine won't stay shut either). But I do love Paul Rubens products overall!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
I agree, the phosforecent tin is nicer. I like the purple because it granulates. A colbalt turquoise would be nice but I think they were avoiding cobalt here.

I adored everything about this video! So much so that I saved it in my "best tutorials" list. I am paul rubans crazy. I just love everything I have ever bought. It's my go to paint brand and I have even stopped lusting after many other high end brands. Granted some of the specialty paint like granulation sets or guinuine stones sets well paul rubans hasn't got those in thier lines so I'm not feeling guilty for wanting those too! But by far my favorite is color theory and pigments! I want to know all the pigment info, and how those pigments are made. One color that desperately want is a mummy brown. There are some handmade water colors that have a mummy brown dupe (obviously I can have genuine mummy brown) but it's such a wonderful earthy color. Thank you Lindsey for all you do! I'm not good at drawing, but I love unboxings, swatching, comparisons, loose flower painting, pigments, and color theory! I think this video was made just for me! But I'm not selfish, we can share it with the world! Lol thanks again Lindsay your awesome!

I just purchased the original Paul Rubens 24 set because of your review. I was debating between that and the set in the green tin. I like cadmium’s too! Great review! I might get the Paul Rubins set of 48 when it goes on sale more. I also didn’t like the fact that the green tin did not latch. I use mine on Plein Air and I could just see me spilling the whole green one on the ground or loosing them because the tin did not latch well. Love all your tutorials….and your sat chats!!!

Thank you, Lindsay! I make swatch cards for my paints and stick the wrapper to the back of those (I keep them on large rings). But I also put all the info on the pan itself with a permanent marker so I can never lose it! 😉😁 That is mainly because I pick my colours for a painting and assemble them before I start. I have all my paints sorted by colour. However, I have a "limited" selection compared to the paints you have!!! And I don't use a certain pallette (box) unless I paint on the go with my travel pallette. My Schmincke Horadam Magenta is PV42 (Quinacridone Violet). PV19 seems a little more bluish in the paints that I have. My Schmincke Horadam Indigo contains PB66 (Indigo and PB15:1)! 😉😁 These paints seem nice and I am sure there are some mis-prints as you said. The little rose painting came out very nicely! 🤗🥰😘

Hullo Lindsay, I did go to Amazon and the price as of April 11 2022 is $41.63. I did get the shimmer or pearl set, but took the paints out and used the pink palette for a regular set for my wife! YES, I put DaVinci watercolor paints in the palette! I did enjoy the painting you did on the round paper and seeing how the paints worked with a more standard paper. I am not fond of the pyramid dome palettes as I have gotten a not so nice one when I bought one a few years ago too! I am glad you continue to educate and we can never get enough paint theory! Hey Lindsay! Awesome review. It confuses me only why PY3 and PY151 are both included because they both lean cool/lemony. 151 is Azo Yellow in M. Graham & DS and I like it for my cool yellow if I'm not using true Cad Yellow Light or PY175 (Winsor Lemon/DS Lemon). That May Green might have 151 as well added as it's cooler than 110 which would create an olive-y green, but I could be wrong. That's what happens when they send inaccurate literature sadly. I also think their new Ultramarine looks closer to a true Cobalt than any other hue I've seen and if I'm ever feeling stingy with pricey PB28 I'd use it; would love to see it in a tube form.

At 52:16 you brought out a chart of Paul Ruebens set of 24 from a few years ago. What were those 2 violets in the lower right? Swatching was okay, but the last third where you were doing color wheels was an excellent lesson in color theory. One of the best lessons I’ve seen.

Great review, as always. Would you consider doing different segments on cadmium and quinacridone watercolors. Maybe swatch/brand comparison to the none cadmiums and quinacridones, why choose them or not (besides less toxic)? Are cadmiums more traditional color palettes? I guess basically if toxicity is not an issue, why would an artist select cadmiums, cobalts and quinacridones watercolor paints? Phew! Your more fun to listen to and watch than reading HandPrint, lol.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
Quinacridones are perfectly safe. Very transparent and lightfast. Cadmiums are about the most lightfast pigments but some people like to avoid them for health or ecological reasons. I don't plein air paint with cadmiums because I don't want to accidentally pollute anything if my pallet tips out of my kayak. I think that companies are happy to embrace the trend and because it's cheaper to make hues. Cadmiums can be opaque too so they can get muddy if your not careful.

I was watching your video and fell asleep 😂 , not because I was bored, just because I was really tired! But when I woke up, you were making the split-complementary color wheels, and I wanted to ask you where you got the printouts for the small ones that you painted in? I was really interested in your process! I had made a split-complimentary one a couple years ago, but my blues and reds may have been a little off, plus they weren't the best quality paints, so now that I have some better quality primary colors, I want to make another one or two of these. Thank you!

I prefer my OG pink palette. I feel like the palette itself is one of the highest quality I've ever gotten, the presentation is unbeatable (they put the big boys to shame with how great this palette looks and feels on arrival), and the paints are great... an extremely solid set of colors, including traditional pigments (colors are the pigments they should be), mostly single pigments, and cadmiums/cobalt (I have the 48 pan). That said I do regret buying it, only because I cannot buy single pan or tube refills and with half pans they won't last long especially your workhorse shades. I never reach for it because I know I can't refill it. I think the bag/cloth is more for presentation and keeping the surface pristine in shipping than any particular use. I think that naples yellow is a try for the Holbien Jaune Brilliant which is extremely popular.

At one time they had refills on their Amazon shop in the United States. It's worth a check because it's a shame not to use a palette you enjoy.

@@thefrugalcrafter Just checked again.. just sets. So if I run out of ultramarine blue or burnt sienna I have to buy at least 18 tubes of paint to get another one. I never even thought about it when I bought it, but now I make sure I can get open stock before I buy anything.
@TRANSSENTIENT
@TRANSSENTIENT Год назад
I know this is an old comment (9 months as of now) but I got my refills from aliexpress. I knew that Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Light, Sea Blue and Emerald Green would go quickly since there are quite some dents in the pans compared to the other colors 😅Depending on delivery rate it'll take some time to arrive, but it's worth it!

Thanks for this thorough review! I thought it was over after the swatches and then came the mixing, wow! Extra bonus, so thank you again! I always find these reviews interesting, definitely NOT a "go to sleep" with Lindsay video 🤣😂. Plus, you know your pigments,so it is good to know what is in the pan actually. I recently got the small 12 set half pans and liked it,with the exception of the umber, which was all gummy and streaky. I prefer tubes, so I want to get some of their colours, but got quite confused by the descriptions of their different lines. Do you have any insights on how to figure out which ones are student grade and which ones are student grade?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
Currently the regular tubes on amazon are student grade and I don't recommend them, I mean they are ok but the artist grade were not much more and a much better value.

Per the Arteza round paper comment-it seems like their line has become less budget friendly in general. Is this palette different paint than is in their traditional pink palette? I couldn’t find this one, specifically.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
I linked to it in the description I think (I'll check) but id say the quality us the same but some colors are different. The original set had colbalt and cadmium colors and this one has hues so for that reason I personally would get the original.

Anyways, I love my Paul Rubens 48 that I got - are they as good as Daniel Smith? No, I don't think so. But I do still really like painting with them, and for the price they're definitely worth while. I know that Schmincke has a PV42, they call it magenta, and it’s pretty reasonably lightfast 👍 in fact, the more I compare, they’re copying a lot of the Schmincke colours. Different names, but identical pigment combos. Very interesting.

I have several Paul Ruben’s sets, and love them! I really wish their floral set would comeback! I missed out on that one. 😞 I could probably make one with the pallets I have, but I don’t want to split my sets up, lol! I really like my phosphorescent set! I prefer the cloth wrap around the tin. I hope they don’t continue that organza bag. The cloth makes the sets feel very special to me! Have you seen the 48 set of the Pretty Excellent set? It looks like it has the original 36 plus 12 metallics. Thank you so much for this review!
@thefrugalcrafter

That floral tube set is great. I don't know why they no longer have them on Amazon. The only artist grade tubes they have are the neon and granulating. My hunch is that the Amazon warehouses require them to stock a minimum and I think they charge them for storage so they probably don't restock if sales slow down.
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 года назад
I did see that set and Kimberly crick compared it to the original 36 set. I think the names and numbers are the same and they look the same but under black light she found many colors having fluorescent dye to boost the color which means they will likely fade more quickly. Probably to keep the cost down.

Actually you'd probably make it to mid-season on Survivor if they still play like they did in the first few seasons. They pick off the ones they think are likely to win first and keep the people they're not worried about for later on when they're getting more comfortable with their own chances.
