I love watching someone explain a new toy they've been looking forward to. I didn't think they were still making servers actually, I only remember the name from very old storage equipment

Hi, Art of Server. You can check more on QCT by "Googling" QCT. QCT is the reason why Facebook saved $1.2Billion is 3 years from 2009-2012. QCT has partnered with Facebook as ODM and formed Open Compute Project and built an open standard specs for a better server, storage design build out. AMD server white paper even acknowledge QCT as the OCP V2.0 design reference. Searching further, QCT is hands full just serving other hyperscale data centers (500 racks and 10k sq.feet DC sites) like AWS, Rackspace, MS Azure. Their parent company Quanta most likely built the OEM laptops we are typing/using today. Very low key company just "working hard in silence". Thanks.

Never even heard of this brand when i started looking into servers. Went with a Dell PowerEdge as my first home server cause Dell felt like the dominate brand when it came to refurbished models and parts. It is nice to look inside other company servers to appreciate the simple things taken for granted like hot-swap fans. Thanks for the content.

I remember Compaq all the way back to the days of 386's/ ISA and MFM/RLL HDDs - god I'm gettin old. Those rails are way to shiney to hide in a rack. Can't wait to see all the goodies in the box, this is better than Christmas!!! :)

Indeed! I have plans for more supermicro stuff, but I get so many Dell server related questions every day!

Yep, I remember using Compaq computers in middle and high school... Anyone remember the digital dec PCs?

OMG! I was a huge DEC Alpha fan! I still have a PWS 500a with the 21164a processor!

I have a couple of these myself, but struggle that the blades are superloud. What RPMs are your blades running on at idle?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 3 года назад
The default is a bit loud, but I wouldn't consider "super loud". What's your ambient temps? When I get back to this project, I'll look into how to override control of the fans...

Could you please explain why Supermicro is better than Dell servers? Thank you for the great content, it helped me learn a lot.

Good question! That's beyond a comment post, but I'll keep it for a future video idea! :-)

Dell servers are the best value in the United States if you are going for used. IBM servers are comparable prices but you have a much more limited configuration options. Just the R720/R720XD alone has 5 different versions you can get for what you are trying to build. The firmware updates are free on dells as well. HPs generally run cheaper but require a license/service to get updates, and again, have less config options for the specific application you are going for. The dells just have the update iso available for anyone to grab, parts are cheap and there are thousands out there for good prices. This is why they are so popular with the second hand market. For a used server its best to get a brand with the largest surplus of spare parts available, and that is dell hands down.

Yeah, agree on those points.

I interviewed at a job where they walked me through their local datacenter and showed me a 1U chassis with a bunch of modular arm processing modules in it (basically, some company's take on Raspberry Pi "compute modules"). I've found a few instances of the same kind of rig that's targeting commercial use, but I haven't found anything that's tricked down to the consumer market. Is this something you've come across and might be able to offer? Its the perfect kind of thing for running Kubernetes or Ceph in a home-lab environment.

I've seen setups like that in various configurations, but I've never worked on one or owned one. Interesting stuff though... I wonder how it compares to GPGPU setups or FPGA type of setups.

most servers that are not supermicro are actually quanta and a couple of others. Dell, hp, lenovo for the most part only spec the designs..they are manufactured by third parties...like quata..:)

The market is always changing, but I don't think Quanta made servers for Dell or HP. I think Lenovo makes their own stuff... There are a lot of players that make servers that most of us don't hear about. Besides Quanta, there are Foxconn, Inventec, Wistron, etc. Quanta made some for Facebook too. I think Inventec built some of the Dell PowerEdge stuff, and Foxconn built for HPE. But the landscape is dynamic so things are always changing...
