An unboxing of my new Stanwood Needlecraft Yarn Swift! This is an Amish style table top yarn swift, I'm really excited to be able to also use this for cutting fringe. I'm also comparing this Stanwood yarn swift to my old wood umbrella yarn swift to show you the difference between the two, as well as the pros and cons.

I have this swift at home and use it all the time. The wobble doesn't bother me and hasn't caused a problem when I use it.

I own one of these and use it all the time. If you get a slightly bigger dowel, I am not so sure it would spin freely. Remember, it needs to be able to spin as quickly as you can turn your ball winder.

You could put bees wax on the noisy screw.

Hi 👋 first time commenter long time viewer (you literally inspired me to make my own tapestry loom and start weaving, so huge thanks💜) BUT i have some ideas to help with friction fits...you have some options: depending on the wood, you might be fine spraying/dropping some water on it to swell the wood a bit to make it fit better (i have to do this all the time with my spinning paraphernalia lol, I've lost too many bobbins because the wood got too dry and cracked- especially because where I live is a dry climate) and/or you could use some wadded up paper in the cracks/loose bits and tighten the fit that way. Let me know if that helps! 🙂 Edit to add: with your table top squeak, you should try lubing the wooden screw with some mineral oil (or literally any oil, lanolin might work, spinning oil would be fine, heck maybe even WD-40?) to take you out of squeak city and into quiet ville. 😂

Hahaha, yes the squeaking could definitely be improved, although I think the real problem is that it just doesn't fit properly (it was cheap). I'm definitely not a fan of the wood screw mechanism. And yes! That's the plan I'll probably do a coat of clear coat on the dowel to snug it up a bit, paper would work but would drive me nuts not being a permanent fix lol, and could prevent it from spinning nicely. As I said, once it's spinning it actually didn't seem to really matter that the fit was loose. Something to get used to! However, I definitely think there are better designed versions of the Amish style yarn swift.

I just bought this last week with the ball winder. I love them both, (the wobble wasn’t a problem for winding skeins) but I love the idea of using it to cut fringe!

For your fringe winding, use a niddy-noddy. They are designed to measure your hanks.

I would use a coach bolt for the middle , that would stop the wobbling

Sometimes wood products that come packaged in plastic bags will swell in more humid areas. When the wood acclimates to your home it may be fabulous. Wood flooring needs be in your home for a few days before installation to prevent buckling. Maybe this will solve the problem. Love your how-to videos!

Unfortunately I live in a very dry and cold climate, so we have the opposite problem lol!

Thanks for your review! I have a swift similar to the one you don’t like. I don’t like mine either! I use a ball winder similar in style to the Stanwood, although I think mine was made in Japan. I’d be interested in seeing how this works with your ball winder - I know that when I get cranking, mine files! I also wonder if the instability could be aided by some washers to weigh it down? I agree that there should be a screw top to hold down that center peg!

Once the Christmas rush is over, I'll try to do another video showing how it works with the ball winder, I haven't gotten a chance to try it quite yet!

Hi Jenell if you look under "your orders" on amazon it will tell you how much it cost you. I buy loads of stuff this way so I know you should be able to find out this way. I'm not sure that I'd have the room or patience to cope with that one. Lol Hope you're all OK. Lots of love to you all. Jen xxx

Is the wood coated with anything? I wonder if humidity would affect it's functionality at all.

It's not coated, I think because it's a friction fit swift it's just not the best design.

@@spruceandlinen When I saw that wobble, I wondered if a cotton ball or small piece of felt shoved in there might help. I just worry about humidity warping it down the road, too, and giving the joints some difficulty. I think the Chiagoo model has varnish on it, so that might be minimized.
