I decided it was time to dabble in the slightly more expensive fishing rods out there on the market. In the United States the most respected manufacturer in that department is St. Croix. In this video we unbox, test, and review the St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'1" medium power fast action fishing rod.

Nice and you went right for getting the medium, I have the medium heavy version of it and I only it for saltwater fishing. I’m hoping to purchase the rod tomorrow. Awesome video exact model I’m looking at getting

It's a great rod. I actually prefer it to my St. Croix Victory in the same model.

Hey there, so I don't think it's the number of rod guides that limited your casting with this new rod, (most quality rods have 8 or more guides) but I think it has to do with the line #test you are using. Ten# test makes it harder to toss those light lures vs the 6# you put on the other new reel you reviewed a few days ago. And the fact that it's mono rather than flourocarbon might be why you weren't feeling bottom like you expected. Flouro sinks but mono floats. (relatively speaking...) So that lighter flouro would get you lure down and keep it nearer the bottom vs heavier mono.

Thanks for the information. I agree that 10 pound mono will be harder to cast than 4 pound fluro which is on my ultralight. I was comparing the casting distance of this rod (and reel) to my other medium power rods (and similar reels) that also have 10 pound mono using the same lure on both set ups. After using this rod and reel for over a month now I've gotten used to it, but it still doesn't cast the same lures as far as my previous medium power rod with a 2500 reel and 10 pound mono. I actually spoke with a rod builder last week about this. What he said made a lot of sense. More guides help with casting up until a certain point and then they hinder the cast. He didn't know what the sweet spot was and now looking back I'm not sure if the 8 guides are causing the shorter casts, but it was just my first impression.

I still have it. It's great. I still think it's a little too strong and too powerful for your general bass, but it gets the job done. You're not going to enjoy fighting 1 or 2 pound fish, but it's perfect for 3-5 pounders. I don't use it as much anymore since I got a Victory rod which I like better, and I would recommend spending the extra $40 and picking that one up. I have a video on it as well.

I fish mainly for bass trout northern pike and some salmon. Would the mojo bass be able to handle those? If so what configuration do you think?
@TheFishingNomad
@TheFishingNomad 3 года назад
I think this rod, the 7'1" MF is a great rod for bass and northern pike. You shouldn't have a problem there. I do think it'll be a little too strong for trout though. Honestly in my opinion no single rod would be good for those four species. You should probably look at two separate rods.

@@TheFishingNomad what’s a good action and strength for trout? And I thought for pike it should be heavier like mh fast

How it work with 3/4 once shad? And with a 1/2 jerkbait? I'm trying to know the real cast of this rod. Maybe shall i look for the 3/4 model or it will be to strong? Thank u
@TheFishingNomad
@TheFishingNomad 3 года назад
The 3/4 shad might be a little too big for this rod, but should still be doable. At the top end it's rated for lures 5/8 of an ounce, slightly smaller that 3/4. I think it would be perfect for a 1/2 jerkbait. The one I used in this video was 1/4 and although it worked well, I realized it was a little on the light side. I think both this rod and a slightly stronger rod will be fine for your applications, just depends on if you want to fish in a more finesse way or a more power way.

I'm only use "heavy" bait, b.m or softjerk of 3/8 to 3/4. Jerk and darter of 3/8 to 5/8. Casting jig of 5/8. I know stcroix blanc is american, so more powerfull, but maybe i have to choise the powerfull model (3/4). Still in doubt:D

St Croix rods in my opinion are definitely stronger and more powerful than other makers. I don't know how you like to fish, but from what you've said I think you would like a MH rod more than a M.

st croix always seems stiffer than other companies. Great rods but I prefer their moderate fast rods. Its a good inbetween bend
@TheFishingNomad

After using it for several weeks now I've gotta say I still love this rod. However, I still find it too stiff and strong for using soft plastics. I caught a 4+ pound peacock bass on it and the fight was nonexistent. I ordered a ML Avid X for smaller presentations. I'm hoping that rod can fill in where this rod falls behind.
